Early cheatsheets, etc. (1 Viewer)

Footballguy
Just saw this on the weekly content page:

Note: I have decided to list the projections, early cheatsheets and Lineup Dominator releases as Wednesday content going forward. We will always work through Tuesday night to deliver this content as quick as possible.

Any chance at getting at least the "Early Cheatsheets" during Tuesday evening? I'm sure there are many in the same boat as I who find their initial (and most important) waiver wires of the week running at midnight (EST) Tuesday night. Without some focused guidance regarding the best potential waiver wire pickups, I have come to rely upon the "Cheatsheets" as sort of a guide to assist in this weekly decision-making. The "Upgrade/Waiver" list can't be used for this purpose as the "upgrade" piece is merely reflective of the previous weekend's performances and there are far too many "gems" identified to make any sense out of that.

Thanks for the consideration,

It seems like there's not enough info for them (or anyone) to do accurate projections Tuesday. Wednesday, most teams practice so there's a lot more to go on. It's tough to do the projections accurately, even when you have all the info.

That said, the Top 250 forward might help your purpose. At this point in the season, that could be viewed as a decent weekly guide for a redraft league.

it would be nice if some effort was made to get even some information out by tuesday evening. heck, even sportsline gets their projections out right away. the top250 is great, but its focus is on the rest of the season, not on the upcoming week... and, like the OP said, the "Upgrade/Waiver" isn't that helpful for determine which "gem" to go for.

seems like a workable solution would be to try and beef up the forward projections a little, especially for the week beyond the upcoming week. imagine if tighter preliminary projections for this week (#10) had been done even prior to week #9's games... that way, all you'd have to do is slot in the obvious adjustments (e.g. LJ getting hurt, etc), and you'd be mostly done... at least, it'd be a lot better than nothing.

and just to preempt anyone who says "go make your own projections", let me say this... the primary reason i subscribe to FBG is so that if i'm too busy to pay much attention to football that i can just fire up lineup dominator, download the latest projections, and quickly make a decent decision that let me be at least halfways competitive. so for that reason alone, i would really like to lobby for earlier projections... if the subscription price needs to go up, so be it.

Hate to pile on here because I love the service as a whole but it needs to be done.

This FBG's used to be the far and away early source for weekly info and advice but the popularity of fantasy football and the NFL has leveled the playing field to the point that every Tom, **** and Harry has the same timely information

Many leagues have Tuesday waiver pickups and the slowing of the paid advice drastically lowers the value of the service since FBG's isn't providing timely info.

Please take this as friendly constructive criticism from a loyal customer that wants to see FBG's remain the best in the business because that is my intention.

I know you guys feel the time crunch every football season and this year is actually one of the best we've seen in a long time in terms of the staff meeting the projected info deadlines but Tuesday cheatsheets or more specifically for me Lineup Dominator is a huge deal.

Can we get some clarification on the reasoning If it is due to lack of information that is one thing. I even think early predictions were awesome. I used them along with upgrades and waivers to pick up free agents and look at week spots comming for the week.

If it is due to the lack of time to complete the early projections along with the other content then I think there is content by Dodds and others that can be moved back. Such as game predictor or contest stats or Matchup Data all these are less important than the Early game predictions. And yes I am still in the Contest but that comes out when it comes out the information on how I did is not time sensitive.

Thanks for listening. FBG is by far still the best information for Fantasy Football anywhere.

I love this site but I do have to agree that lately I have been disappointed a little with the Upgrade/Waiver. I mean having Olindo Mare as the #1 upgrade in the kicker section is borderline incompetence. He missed 2 short FG's in the last game and has missed just as many FG's as he has made this year. A potential waiver wire gem is not a 50/50 kicker. He got booed off of the field on Sunday. If it takes them an extra day to get a little more info to do the weekly cheatsheets then I am all for it. This past week Matt Hasselbeck started the week off on Tuesday as the #2 QB play and then in 2 days he was the #10 QB play. Maybe this will cut down on this happening.

olindo mare is terrible anyways. it's your fault if he is on your team in the first place. Hasselbeck is a good QB1. Do you really need advice to start him?

Who said he was on my team? Olindo Mare is god awful and this site had him ranked as the #1 upgrade to your kicker this week. I was pointing out how terrible this was. And of course Matt Hasselbeck is a must start and I don't need the rankings to tell me he is a start but if on Tuesday you have him ranked as #2 start of the week and then by Thursday he ranked the #10 start of the week I have to wonder what the hell happened in 2 days for his ranking to change so much. The whole point of me using that example was me saying that if they waited a day or so more in the week to do the rankings that it might cut out situations like that one. Slow down and read a little more carefully so you can fully comprehend what you are reading next time.

bro, it wasn't a knock on you. Sorry if I implied this was your situation or these were your players. Though, the 2 examples you sited are no brainers. I assume people use the projections for more difficult decisions than the two you are citing.

Thanks for the feedback guys.

With everything we do, there is a struggle to balance quality with time. It's that way pretty much with everything in life.

We will continue as we always have to give you the Upgrade / Downgrade / Waiver Wire information on Monday. As well as the Top 250 Going Forward, detailed injury recaps and game recaps. I know many people have waiver wire pickup that starts early in the week and that's our first focus of the week.

We could give you full projections Sunday night for the upcoming week. But the quality would be laughable. We could give you fantastic projections on Saturday night, but that's too late for many people.

So we try to balance it out and give you the best weekly projections we can the earliest we can. We had hoped that could be Tuesday night. What we found was the quality we were able to get trying to rush through them by Tuesday just wasn't worth putting our name on. As you know, they were getting done later and later Tuesday night. Oftentimes about midnight pacific time which for many folks in the east, is really Wednesday morning.

So that's what we're doing.

We'll continue to give you the Top 250, Upgrade / Downgrade / Waiver Wire report / Injury recap / Game Recaps all on Monday so you can make the best waiver wire / trade moves on Monday.

And for setting your lineup for that specific week, we'll give our detailed weekly stat projections very early on Wednesday morning.

This is still almost a day earlier than what we did last year. We heard the folks asking for earlier weekly projections and we've done that.

I'm sure there are some folks that would like to have the weekly stat projections on Monday. But with the injury situations, and the general lack of information regarding who has been able to practice and how they've looked, it's not feasible to put something out Tuesday that has any value. I'd rather give our guys something that some value than throwing something out there that I feel is really useless (or even worse - damaging) just so we can say we beat a Tuesday deadline.

Thanks.

J

It's cool. You have the exact same opinion on Mare that I do...lol.

This is just me talking here Joe, but I would rather you guys take all the time you wanted to put out cheatsheets, waiver upgrades, and stat projections. Don't overwork yourself early in the week just to change things later in the week. Take a couple of days to gather all your research and stuff and then put out finished stuff on Wednesday night or Thursday even. That would save you guys some stress of having to put something/anything out by a deadline of Monday or Tuesday. Just a thought.

Hi gate,Thanks - that's exactly how I'd prefer to do it but I also understand we have to listen to our customers who want it early. I think the current thing is the best balance.Although I will be totally honest, if I were a subscriber to FBG, when it came to setting my lineup I wouldn't look at the cheatsheets until the very latest possible time I could. A cheatsheet put out on Tuesday night with virtually zero information on practice ability or injury status really isn't worth a lot. I want to see how the guy can practice on Thursday and Friday and then make a call. But I understand people want it earlier. So we do the best we can (and I honestly think it's better than anyone else out there) on those early days. I'm just saying the later days are much better in my opinion. J

A Tuesday afternoon "Gut Check" would probably satisfy most people. Not a full cheatsheet but a "with what I know right now here is where I'd put the players in the news". This week is a perfect example, with LJ going down. Perhaps a "This week: Priest RB20, Smith RB35 Going Forward: Smith RB20, Priest RB30" (The numbers are purely for example, not my projections!)I agree with another poster that said that this year has been a VERY good FBG year. In my opinion, the best year since I started subscribing. I hope the FBG have been able to maintain a balance. :kicksrock:

If anyone doesn't use the Lineup Dominator take a look at what the most recent version now offers. In recent weeks forward week by week player projections thru the end of the season were added. They are displayed by FF team and for the player pool. There is also a Weekly Lineup window which suggests your best lineup for each week of the season.

Until the Wednesday update they will be based on pre-Sunday game information but it is still very useful for waiver wire planning purposes.

I, for one, think that the quality of this week's "early" cheatsheet is the best we have seen in a long time. I think FBG giving themselves a little extra time to produce the rankings is a smart move.

this is more what i was hinting at. yeah, i'd rather have the cheatsheets as well-though out as possible, but i'd still like something more than the upgrade/waivers report in time for my waivers. maybe the report could be somewhat ranked? if not a full ranking, at least in tiers?my point: so LJ goes down... i am very interested in the staffers' first blush on the situation... go with holmes? when will smith emerge? the FBG staff knows way more about me than football, so i would like to pay for their opinion. and in no way would i hold them to it like some morons around here are wont to do...

my week typically goes: waivers->trades->roster... so i would vote for:

- a more granular ranking of the waiver pickups by tuesday afternoon

- early weekly and rest-of-the-season projections for trade purposes by mid-week

- then, as late as possible (i like the saturday night + sunday morning combo), the final projections for roster purposes

in my book, FBG gets an A+ for the last two items, but about a B- for the first one... just one opinion.

Joe,I concur with your opinion about setting lineups-- the final roster should absolutely not be submitted until the weekend and not until after consultation with the FBG projections. My primary issue (and the motivation behind my post) is I would like some preliminary feel (even if it were "laughable") as to the upcoming weekend's projections prior to my initial waiver wire run of midnight Tuesday. I think this information would provide me with a competitive advantage over those in my league who are non-customers of your site and would add value to your service vs. other competing products (I am assuming other sites do not offer a "first call" set of projections or cheatsheets on Tuesday?).Regards,

I would concur 100% with the posts above. I am currently 9-0 in my league and attribute most of my success this year to the information gleaned from Joe & Co.

A cheatsheet put out on Tuesday night with virtually zero information on practice ability or injury status really isn't worth a lot. I want to see how the guy can practice on Thursday and Friday and then make a call.

I think this information would provide me with a competitive advantage over those in my league who are non-customers of your site and would add value to your service vs. other competing products (I am assuming other sites do not offer a "first call" set of projections or cheatsheets on Tuesday?).

Regards,
without naming competitors, there are three free websites out there that i use which post early projections on tuesday... one of them updates randomly throughout the week, the other two just do one big update at the end of the week. so for me, the value of FBG doesn't really kick in until wednesday morning when i first get to see what the early projections are. in other words, i find FBG immensely valuable for trades and rosters... but i actually use other sites for waivers. again, just one opinion.

A Tuesday afternoon "Gut Check" would probably satisfy most people. Not a full cheatsheet but a "with what I know right now here is where I'd put the players in the news". This week is a perfect example, with LJ going down. Perhaps a "This week: Priest RB20, Smith RB35 Going Forward: Smith RB20, Priest RB30" (The numbers are purely for example, not my projections!)

I agree with another poster that said that this year has been a VERY good FBG year. In my opinion, the best year since I started subscribing. I hope the FBG have been able to maintain a balance.
this is more what i was hinting at. yeah, i'd rather have the cheatsheets as well-though out as possible, but i'd still like something more than the upgrade/waivers report in time for my waivers. maybe the report could be somewhat ranked? if not a full ranking, at least in tiers?my point: so LJ goes down... i am very interested in the staffers' first blush on the situation... go with holmes? when will smith emerge? the FBG staff knows way more about me than football, so i would like to pay for their opinion. and in no way would i hold them to it like some morons around here are wont to do...

my week typically goes: waivers->trades->roster... so i would vote for:

- a more granular ranking of the waiver pickups by tuesday afternoon

- early weekly and rest-of-the-season projections for trade purposes by mid-week

- then, as late as possible (i like the saturday night + sunday morning combo), the final projections for roster purposes

in my book, FBG gets an A+ for the last two items, but about a B- for the first one... just one opinion.
:excited: I agree 100% with the content and sentiment of this post. I've often lamented the fact that the waiver/injury lists don't have any kind (even a feel) of ranking or relevance factor to them. I know that's hard to put together w/o complete information, so a disclaimer of some sort might be in order (like the running/passing matchups breakdown). Anyway, just one more subscriber's $0.02. Awesome work all around, but waivers do process on Tuesday night in 1 league, and it's been a rough year for them thus far...so any help would be much appreciated.

Exactly. Some criticized the Tuesday rankings and now FBG's waits. I fail to see how waiting to put it out until Wednesday morning helps.

Many leagues run waivers at or near 12:01 AM on Wednesday morning. I think there should be some content that reflects the needs of those customers.

Thanks Joe you answered the question I had and that was it wasn't just about the time it takes to get the projections out on Tuesday. The fact that it was the lack of information early on Tuesday's makes a lot of sense and having the weekly predictions early Wednesday works for me since I use them to make minor tweaks and waiver wire pickups. I have been subscribing to this site for 7 years and I have finished 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, 1, 3 and am havign a great year at 8 - 1. Prior to using this site I never made the playoffs. I have learned alot of the years and the information and boards are invaluable. Knowing that your early predictions are just that early predictions I check back during the week. Keep up the good work and Wednesday is still pretty early for projections and if that extra time gives you the ability to be more informed then I can live with Wednesday morning

Hey I applaud the effort to make the Rankings better, I think tuesday is far too quick to compile the data, injuries and tendancies.

I don't know about anyone else, but it would really help me out a LOT if the Upgrade/Waiver lists were a bit more organized. There are so many people on the "upgrade" list and so many "gems", including many that shouldn't even be rostered in many leagues who just had one fluke good week. I am fine with waiting for the early cheatsheets, but I would love a more organized Upgrade/Waiver Wire list. Like, who is a must add in all leagues, who is a "gem" only in very deep leagues, and who has value only in dynasty leagues (that have no bearing to those of us in redraft leagues), etc.

Just another 2 cents from another long-time subscriber and appreciative fan! :football:
