Ebola (1 Viewer)

How Ebola became a political issue for the right wing is beyond me. Disgusting.
They hop on all negative news. Who cares. This shouldn't be surprising. They look to blame Obama for everything that happens, as if he's the supreme dictator of the world and everything that happens in it.

I'm bringing my dog, an assault rifle, a #### ton of bullets, an ax, some snow shoes, a bunch of gasoline a couple of fly-rods and maybe a couple broads out to the mountains to wait this thing out.

The broads should be #1 on that list. If you going to inevitably die, do it in style.

Because people who know a lot about it say that's not a worry?
Devil's Advocate here, but what would be their incentive to say "We should be worried about this"? That only leads to public panic. Of note, both the director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota and the UN Secretary General's Special Representative on the Ebola outbreak have been publicly quoted as indicating that mutation to airborne transmission is possible, if unlikely. Essentially declaring that we're in uncharted waters.
Here's the educational background on Anthony Banbury, UN Secretary General's Special Representative on the Ebola outbreak:

Banbury studied political science at Tufts University[2] and obtained his Masters degree from The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy. He also received a Diploma of Higher Studies from the Graduate Institute of International Studies in Geneva.

Most women are so damn annoying though. That's why I'd bring two. In case we had to off one.

Here is what it would take for it to become a real airborne risk:

First off, a substantial amount of Ebola virus would need to start replicating in cells that reside in the throat, the bronchial tubes and possibly in the lungs.

Second, the airborne method would have to be so much more efficient than the current extremely efficient means of transmission that it would overcome any genetic costs to the virus stemming from the mutation itself.

Substantial natural hurdles make it unlikely that either event will occur.

What's the hold-up? “The difficulty is that those [flu] viruses don’t have the protein attachments that can actually attach to cells in the upper airway. They have to develop attachments to do that,” Schaffner says.

So even if a virus were exhaled, it would need to lodge onto something in another person’s cells that are already prepared for it in the upper airway.

“Since the virus doesn’t have attachment factors that can work in the upper airway, it’s very rare for it to go human to human, and then it almost always stops and doesn’t get to a third person,” Schaffner notes.

Similarly for Ebola, the virus would have to develop attachments that would allow it to easily attach receptors in the upper respiratory pathway—something that neither it (nor any of its viral cousins) has been known to do in the wild.

Exactly. He needs to napalm every village that has a confirmed case of Ebola.

While not necessarily opposed to that suggestion, it may be a bit extreme....How about we start by preventing passengers/travelers that come from that region until they pass quarantine.

Imagine the ####storm that will follow if we find any evidence of infection from those crossing en masse over our porous borders.

I know there will certainly be conspiracy theories to all of this going on...population reduction, setup by big pharma in order to create a vaccine and make massive profits, etc.
Farrakhan claims Ebola invented to kill off blacks

Firebrand Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan’s latest racially-charged claim is that Ebola – the deadly disease ravaging parts of Africa and now diagnosed on American soil – was designed by white scientists specifically to kill off blacks.

The 81-year-old leveled the charge in his organization’s newspaper, The Final Call, insisting the disease is man-made and cooked up in a laboratory as a means of population control. He underscored the claim on his Twitter page, which has 308,000 followers.

“There is a weapon that can be put in a room where there are black and white people, and it will kill only the black and spare the white, because it is a genotype weapon that is designed for your genes, for your race, for your kind,” Farrakhan wrote.

Farrakhan has previously made similar claims about AIDS. This time, he cited a 2000 research paper by the now-defunct think tank Project for the New American Century which predicted “advanced forms of biological warfare that can target specific genotypes, may transform biological warfare from the realm of terror to a politically useful tool.”

The first known case of Ebola dates back to 1976, but outbreaks have occurred, mostly in Africa, in the decades since. The current outbreak began in Guinea last December and spread to Liberia, Sierra Leone, Nigeria and Senegal and is now responsible for more than 3,300 deaths. The disease, which has a mortality rate of between 50 and 90 percent, is spread by contact with body fluids and no credible medical authority believes it affects races differently.

The first diagnosis on U.S. soil associated with the current outbreak came on Wednesday and involved a Sierra Leone man who flew to Dallas.

But Farrakhan is not alone in his suspicions about Ebola. Villagers in remote areas of Africa have alleged the disease is a Western plot and has even killed aid workers. And in the U.S., Delaware State University agriculture professor Cyril Broderick wrote a letter to a Liberian newspaper charging Ebola was created by the U.S. military and pharmaceutical companies who are intentionally spreading the deadly disease in Africa.

“The U. S., Canada, France, and the U.K. are all implicated in the detestable and devilish deeds that these Ebola tests are,” wrote Broderick.

For Farrakhan, the wacky theory is just the latest example of him peddling a conspiracy. Last year, he claimed that Henry Kissinger, former secretary of state in the Nixon administration, had concocted a plan in which “2 to 3 billion people on our planet would have to be [killed].”

Good to know that he's not himself trained in viruses or disease. That does change my view on his opinions, though one would have to assume that, through his appointment, he has behind the scenes contact with experts on the subject.

stupid. everyone knows Obama created it to force Americans to get vaccines.

So the CDC has a guideline for dogs/animals with infectious diseases which can include quarantine and or refusal of entry into the country.

Since 1956, federal quarantine regulations, under 42 CFR 71.51, have controlled the entry of dogs into the United States because of the risk for importing rabies and other diseases that can infect people. Today, preventing the entry of dogs infected with canine rabies or other diseases that can infect people in the United States continues to be a public health priority.

But we have no problem allowing humans to come here and infect other humans.

Thanks, that was very informative. I guess my concerns (which I'll fully admit are pretty outlandish) are more focused on the combination of Ebola with a respiratory virus resulting in either a new variety of Ebola that is transmissible by air or some new novel kind of virus that would be classified as a different species, rather than Ebola 'magically' becoming airborne on its own. The truth of the situation is that, as far as humans know, this is by orders of magnitude the largest outbreak of Ebola we've ever seen, and as more people become infected, we're rolling the dice again and again that we don't see novel mutations as a result of viral combinations that have never happened before. That said, I'm by no means an expert on this.

CNN) -- Custodians are stepping up cleanup work at Dallas schools attended by the five students who may have been in contact with a man diagnosed with Ebola. "We don't think there's any virus at any of those buildings, but we'll take that off the table, so we're doing extra cleaning and disinfecting," said Mike Miles, superintendent of the Dallas Independent School District. Attendance at the schools Thursday was down to about 86%, Miles said.
Read between the lines 14% of Dallas has Ebola people! Ebocolypse!

Know what? The more I think about tin-foil hat school of thought conspiracy theories, the more I believe Obama is welcoming this into our country.

It kills 3 birds with one stone really.

#1. Create vaccine so big pharmacy can profit

#2. Those who can't pay die...aka, let's kill off those on welfare using our tax dollars to pay for their drug/alcohol habits (or so the stereotype goes), which ultimately doubles as...

#3. Population Reduction

*takes tin-foil hat off*

So, those of you that have convinced yourselves that Ebola will soon be as common as influenza. What have you done to prepare yourself and your family so far?

I bought one of those breaking bad suits in a size up, filled it with hand sanitizer and plan on staying in that until this passes. That stuff kills 99.99% of all germs. Enjoy hell loser

I don't blame any of those parents from holding their kids out of school. I'd do the same.

Same, school systems are generally #### at education anyways, might as well give them 3 weeks 'off' and have them do an at home project or something.

Even as a fan of tin-foil hattery myself, this doesn't make any sense. I thought Obama/the Dems wanted everyone on welfare so they vote Democrat? Why would he kill off his supposed voter base?

If you can come back to school with a working meth lab you automatically pass science. No help from your "uncle".

My kid caught Scarlet Fever in the NYC Public schools. SCARLET FEVER. No- we don't live in a Dickens novel, either. Parents didn't want to be bothered with child-care with their kid, so off to school they went.

If I hear that Ebola has come to NYC and is even remotely associated with a kid in the public schools, my kids get duct-taped to an air purifier at home for the next month.

Whats a #### test?
the #### test was invented in 1924 and was used to identify those susceptible to scarlet fever.[26] A broth culture filtrate from an erythrogenic toxin producing group A streptococci was injected intracutaneously into susceptible persons. In those susceptible erythematous and oedematous skin reactions developed by 24 hours after injection. A second injection of antitoxin into the site neutralized the reactions. Non-reactors were considered to have sufficient antibodies to the toxin and thus were not susceptible to scarlet fever.

Gladys Henry **** and George Frederick **** developed a vaccine in 1924 that was later eclipsed by penicillin in the 1940s. Broth filtrates were used as the basis for the patent the ##### took out on their vaccine in 1924 in the United Kingdom and in 1925 in the United States.

Neither the vaccine nor the #### test is in use currently.

File this under common sense measures not being considered.

Family of the patient are under supervision after they violated their order to stay put.

Meanwhile, soiled sheets and towels are still in the apartment. Human nature is what it is. We need better controls to ensure that the exposed are removed from contagions, infected areas are decontaminated and that those under quarantine are in a place they can be controlled from breaking the order.

Why is this not obvious? If this spreads domestically, it's Obama's Katrina. This needs to be addressed with proactivity and awareness of human nature, particularly of people who just don't give a #### about their impact on others. (A good percentage of people generally).

Flashback: Senator Obama rips Bush for being unprepared for avian flu epidemic

This lack of planning is compounded by the fact that we still dont have a FDA approved vaccine against avian flu, and the one drug that many countries are relying onTamiflumay be less effective than experts had thought. The manufacturer is also struggling to meet the demand, and it could take up to 2 years for it to make enough for the U.S. stockpile, presuming this Administration finally puts in an order for the drug.

The failure to prepare for emergencies can have devastating consequences. We learned that lesson the hard way after Hurricane Katrina. This nation must not be caught off-guard when faced with the prospect of an avian flu pandemic. The consequences are too high.

The flyways for migratory birds are well-established. We know that avian flu will likely hit the United States in a matter of time. With the regular flu season coming up shortly, conditions will be favorable for reassortment of the avian flu virus with the annual flu virus. Such reassortment could lead to a mutated virus that could be transmitted efficiently between humans, which is the last condition needed for pandemic flu.

The question is will we be ready when that happens? Lets make sure that answer is yes. I urge my colleagues in the Senate and the House to push this Administration to take the action needed to prevent a catastrophe that we have not seen during our lifetimes.
Best part-
Theres been too much talk, then-Senator Obama intoned, and not enough action. If thats the standard Obama demanded of the White House in 2005, then now-President Obama has failed much more substantially in addressing the developing Ebola epidemic that has unlike the avian flu reached our shores.
