Ebola (1 Viewer)

FTR I could give a #### less if we ban travel to/from the entire continent of Africa.

I just don't think it will help anything, and in the long run, it will make things worse.
How would if make it worse?
Because ignoring the major issue in Africa and letting this fester is only going to make this WAY worse.

If we took immediate action when we found out about patient 0, went to Africa, enacted a proper quarantine and provided adequate treatment/education it would have been contained.

But we left them to themselves where it spread like wildfire. It will only get worse. We can keep it out of America for awhile, but when the majority of Wester Africa is either dead or infected it will be 10x harder to keep out.
I don't think people are saying shut down the borders and IGNORE Africa. I think the idea is to fix Africa and contain it there.
I still think shutting down borders will cause economic issues and still not really prevent any further spread.

The part that pisses me off is the #######s saying we should turn our backs on American citizens who were kind enough to risk their lives to try to save others and refuse to let them back here for treatment.
I actually think that was my statement that got misquoted and then a bunch of people ran with. I had said that anyone who went over there and worked on patients with Ebola should be quarantined for 21 days before being allowed to travel back. Next thing I know, people were saying that reminded them of Hawaii and Polio.

Seriously, I don't know what is wrong with some of you people.
I know this is meant for me. And maybe Tobias. Honestly I feel the same way. And this is nothing personal shader, because I like you a lot and as I wrote, I respect your thoughts on many issues- and I respect many of the posters who agree with you on this issue (that also seems to be a majority of Americans at this time.)

But we just don't see eye to eye on this. I think you guys have gone off your heads. We have TWO confirmed cases so far. We have less than 10,000 confirmed cases world wide. And for that, we're going to quarantine whole countries? (Or the continent of Africa???) We're going to prevent applicants to universities? This whole reaction is madness.

Stephen King's novel Under The Dome (not to be confused with the terrible tv show) is a brilliant study about human nature under stress. King's theme was that the danger came not from the dome itself, but how people trapped inside reacted to the dome. In a way, this Ebola scare is our dome moment. And we're not reacting very well.
Eh, I was just curious if people would be consistent and apply the same logic to, say, a potential banning of Americans by institutions in Europe, or a potential banning of Texans by institutions in other states. They did, or at least they said they would, so that's fine with me. Personally I think any reaction like that is a bunch of paranoid crazy nonsense that will sound ridiculous a year or two from now just like all of our previous wigouts over various supposed pandemics (throwback to the bird flu crisis!), but I'm just here to get a laugh out of it, not to fight about it.

Sorry GB, wasn't referring to you specifically.

What if one of these healthcare workers becomes symptomatic during those 21 days? How do you feel about them being flown back (on a quarantined flight) for treatment in the US?

I'm mostly referring to people I see on facebook who are literally suggesting any Americans who go over there to help deserve to get it and should be left to die over there. And that the risk of bringing them back is too great.

my facebook just told me that someone barfed and died on a plane from africa to new york. wtf is going on? people dont just barf and die like that.
Well, facebook can't lie so it has to be true.

Love how they poo-poo the "Cursory exam" that deems him to not have had ebola.

Like some jackass glorified tablod writer knows better than medical professionals.

How did we ignore it? What country do you suppose has done more to combat this with dollars and science than the states?

There is the cultural imperialism question that meets public health and science as opposed to religion and custom and from what I understand, the tradition of dressing the dead has contributed to this as much as anything. You factor in a lack of trust in the people in science and outsiders, I don't think we as a nation bear responsibility for ignoring this. It's a very layered and sohisticated problem from that view point.

At some point , while great multinational organizations like doctors without borders do gods work battling this on the front lines, you have to sometimes go with isolation if education is not sufficient.

:lmao: @ the comparisons and situations on pages 46 thru this post. You guys have officially lost it...all of you!
Which one specifically tickled you?
hmmmm....I can only pick one? I'll have to go with Tim comparing schools exercising caution to Japanese internment camps for the win Alex.
actually I was comparing Shader's logic in defending the school to the same sort of logic that defended internment. But that's OK.

No worries. In that sense, at first I was weary. But they way they handled the two previous ones seemed quite good. I have no problem with them doing what they did with those two.

In the near future:

Republicans gain control of the Senate.

Entrench further in the House.

Will pass the "Ebola Prevention Act" that will ban all travel to Africa, make it illegal to deploy troops to fight Ebola outside of the country, increase the ability to deport those suspected of Ebola, cut taxes and gut Obamacare.

Obama will veto which leads to two years of complete gridlock while Repubs pass anti-government spending restrictions in all sectors while the daily marching orders become, "Why won't OBAMA stop EBOLA from KILLING YOUR FAMILY"

Repubs take presidency, just as Africa goes dark and Ebola forms a hive mind with a nexus in the Congo

We would like to think advances in disease prevention eliminate the need for Lepers Islands, but the truth is pandemics do not happen a lot. We need a way to track and monitor people exposed to the virus. How about slapping on those angle bracelets used for people under house arrest?

There are 87,000 flights in the US skies everyday. If they average only 100 passengers, it's still close to 9m. Close to 100m every 10 days. In that span, someone has a hearts attack, pukes and dies, it's probably within the expected probability for such a thing. Now add international flights. #### happens in the skies even under normal conditions. I had a guy puke and have a heart attack in my row last year, and it diverted us. Today, people would presume that was Ebola. It wasn't.

Probably vomited up the drug bag he had swallowed, and which had partially burst.

I had a guy die on a flight to vegas once. Thought it was a bad omen, but ended up being a good trip.

I think throwing up during a heart attack isn't uncommon. I know the dad on Weeds threw up, then died while jogging.

If you buy into conspiracy theories here's a good one for you.

The company flying the Ebola victims around the USA is called Phoenix Aviation and they operate a bunch of Gulfstreams and Learjets on government contracts. The have a very special interior for these aircraft with low pressure filters to ensure nothing escapes, special toilets for the patients and more. You can see pictures of this very specific set up here:

http://www.nydailynews.com/life-sty...jet-transport-ebola-victims-article-1.1977123

The CDC and Dept. of Defense contracted with Phoenix 30 months ago to design this interior. So why did the CDC etc. contract 2 1/2 years ago to have this interior designed? How would they possibly know something like this would be needed?? Also Phoenix have some very specific military contracts with their large fleet of jets, and are suspected of being one of the companies involved in the CIA rendition flights.

I hear that is the same company that installed voting booths in Ohio for the 2000 presidential elections.

That doesn't make it better. It makes it worse actually. Stop digging.

Secretly owned by Halliburton imo

I'm sure they charged a lot to transport the few patients. The clean up of the apartment where Duncan stayed costed over $100K. The bill is adding up quickly.

This post is like when the Nazi's invaded France.
The world has turned upside down: Ebola 48 pages vs. Yoga Pants 11 pages.
It doesn't take multiple paragraphs to say "I would kill my whole family for a whiff of that ###"
A picture is worth a thousand words?

Someone send me a PM when we reach the point in the thread where Timmy shoehorns in his thoughts on immigration and / or blames the Tea Party for the ebola.

opnions are like ###(holes), everyone's got one. Most state the same one over and over again.

Not everyone has a picture of a nice one in yoga pants.

Simple, really. ;)
