a bunch of buddies who don't use Footballguys regularly just said they got spammed by footballguys inviting them with some email blast.

what is this?  is this part of the Otis buyout offer to boost the active users?

sounds like it was an error related to the board upgrade.

I actually got several of those e-mails, both at home and work.  I apparently also got some "Insider" content links from "Joe Bryant".  I did not follow the directions and register that way since I am not a paying customer.  I just came back the regular way.  I saw no reason to make them unravel something to boot me out of the paid content on what appears to have been a mistake with the upgrade.

Perhaps they can change my designation to "Outsider", or "Band Width Leach" instead of "Footbalyguy" or "Insider".

I bet they sent this to the email of every registered forum account.  If so, you're all busted for having a bunch of aliases.

it's not something I can easily explain. Just passing along the information that it was an error and not sent intentionally.
I don't think it's on you to explain, but that seems to be something all you guys should want to investigate a little more. In just trying to logically trace how that could possibly happen, you don't really end up with too many scenarios where it could be accidental and not open you up to some privacy concerns.

This should NOT be the default setting. A little miffed that it happened.

It isn't a default setting.  It was an error in the migration.  We've always had the option in your settings to be added to the email distribution or not from the forum settings.  It just didn't work right this time.

I take them at their word that this was a glitch which they will get worked out.  Nothing in their history gives me pause to be suspicious.  I don't necessarily agree with all of their policies or applications thereof, but I have no reason to question their honor or integrity.  Good folks in my view.

Shark move is to have all updates/news sent to an email that is dead.  I haven't used the email associated with this account in 8 years.

Really? That's not the way I understood things. I sent a follow up question.
From what I've been told, these emails only went out to people in the forums database who selected "no" in response to the profile question asking if they wanted to be added to the email list when registering.

No one has posted in here both that an email account got the email, and that the email was never used at FBGs.

Righetti's friends didn't use FBGs "regularly" which implies they used it. Just not regularly.  Otis only said his wife got an email, never stated whether he used it to make an alias or not.  Mr. roboto said his wife's email definitely was used to make an account.  Ditkaless said his extra emails received it, but didn't say whether he ever used them with an account at some point.

I also received one of these emails on an email I don't use with FBGs. Or so I thought.  And then I searched my mail archive and found 9 years ago I made a Botswannan Villager alias to shake a fist at someone comparing clueless people to Botswannan villagers.

My pRon/shady dating sites signup email address got the email. I guess I have an alias I have forgotten about.

This is obnoxious. I'm getting a new email every day "welcoming" me. I hate to mark anything from footballguys as spam, but that's what this is coming to.
