Christians And Mocking - How To Handle? (1 Viewer)

Nevermind, I just checked the FoxNews website and it's the lead story with 4 links. I understand why this is getting conversation now.
I thought you were joking. I can't remember the last time I have gone to that website but holy **** nothing on their is news

It definitely looked like it was an artistic interpretation of The Last Supper to me once you show them next to each other.
Had to be.

Couldn't be an homage to Feast of some Greek God of festivity and feasting and ritual and theater, or whatever totally logical story that guy came up with.

Pffff, why would there be a reference to Greek history? At the Olympics? Come on, how stupid do they think we are?

You only have to watch about the first 15 seconds to see how the scene was obviously not the last supper and how it was intentionally taken out of context to appear that way by the extremist website. And people bought it hook, line, and sinker.
Wait till they get to 38 seconds, and see some model strutting her stuff while wearing red/white/blue.

:lmao:

Suggestion for a new Olympic sport to replace synchronized swimming.....I'm more mocked and ridiculed than you.

It's The Last Supper reenacted with drag queens.
How are you getting "Last Supper" from this?

I think it’s easier to see if you look at this

But I truly have no idea what the person meant. If he meant it to be a take on the Da Vinci painting, I would have said, that’s kind of cool - I wouldn’t have immediately gone to mocking.

According to Twitter it's actually based on the Feast of Dionysus not the Last Supper.
Stuff like this is why we can't have an honest conversation about anything anymore. I don't particularly care if somebody wants to do a satirical reenactment of the last supper, but the gaslighting is beneath us.
I think we are having an honest conversation. This is not something I know much about, why do you think this is definitely based on the Last Supper? I'm assuming you think the art director is not telling the truth so as not to offend as many people? And why does it matter if it's based on the Last Supper?
Obviously the artist was aware of the fact that he was referencing The Last Supper. Along with the Mona Lisa, The Scream, and a tiny number of other paintings, its a work that pretty much every single person living in the western hemisphere knows.

It matters because that's what we're talking about.

You're doing the "this isn't happening, and why do you even care?" meme in real time.

Do you think an artistic interpretation of the Last Supper (along with the Mona Lisa, the Scream and other paintings) is necessarily or obviously an act of “mocking Jesus”?
No, of course not.

Even if it was done with the explicit purpose of mockery, as this one was, I don't particularly care. People have been mocking Christianity my entire life. I have a thick skin about it.
This is a serious question meant with respect... Could you please explain in what way this was mockery of Christianity?
It's The Last Supper reenacted with drag queens. The artist believes that this sort of thing will get a rise out of Christians. The intent is to offend, and we should judge the message by its intent.

It's similar to Piss Christ by Serrano, which I mentioned earlier as a more muscular example of the same genre. It doesn't really matter why it's offensive, whether a person should be offended, or whether any particular person is actually offended. The intent of the piece is to offend. We can't really have an honest discussion without starting from that point.

Did you watch the video just posted?

Ok but the artist is explicitly stating that was not the intent. I assume you think he's lying.

How are you getting "Last Supper" from this?
Not engaging with this, sorry.

I learned my lesson from the PSF. I can spend the next 30 minutes explaining how the composition of this shot recalls The Last Supper, how that work fits into art history, how its impossible for any artist to not realize that he's referencing this work, and why "the death of the author" means that the his intent doesn't matter anyway. It takes 30 minutes to write all the up, and it doesn't matter because I would be refuting a position that you don't actually hold.

You know this is The Last Supper. I know that you know it, and you know that I know that you know it. This isn't an honest conversation between two adults who are looking to fine tune their maps of the world. And I don't need to pretend that it is. Lots of other people out there have explained this if you genuinely don't get it. I am going to assume bad faith and move on.

Whenever there are events in the news I generally check both CNN and Fox to understand where people's opinions will be coming from. Obviously not everyone visits those sites, but you can usually find articles that will summarize what's hot on Facebook.

Oh come on. There were like 100 people around that "table" in the Olympic ceremony. And people on both sides. This is such a huuuuuuuuuuge stretch

I think the menage a trois was more offensive, frankly.
None of the show offended me, except for one small thing. When the characters in the paintings run off to watch the show, one of the paintings used is "The Death Of Marat" by David. David painted that picture of his friend. I'm not sure using a murder victim in that way was particularly nice.

Also applies to those who died on The Raft of the Medusa. Not really cool.
What about Marie Antoinette's head?

Well that's one way to debate a subject.

Unfortunately we live in a time of “being offended”, it’s the default setting at this point it seems like.

The more we can be less worried about what others say and think and worry more about our own actions and how we treat others (and if you’re a parent teaching the same for your kids) the better off we will be as a society. Live and let live.

To be clear - I’m not the one saying it. Just reporting the news. Honestly, given how weird and artsy the Olympics are it wouldn’t surprise me if that’s a plausible scenario. I more was posting the image to make it clear what some people are upset about.

I think if a lot of Christians got out of their bubble and read literally one other book they wouldn’t be so offended and also wouldn’t look so foolish. Not intended at anybody in here of course.

I posted the sentence and linked the article in a previous post.

Also, were all the camera feeds the same? I assume so - the camera person could probably clear this up some.

The video that was posted is the actual feed that aired.

I didn’t ask that well. Is there just one feed that everyone gets or does NBC in US have different cameras than whoever is broadcasting in France or EU?
I'd assume it's like soccer, where the host handles the feed and the networks around the world just broadcast it.

This might be a bad idea
I respect you Joe, but I’m going to have to agree here.

This is clearly in the realm of topics that we’ve been asked to avoid, and frankly, I would bet that if anyone else started this thread, it would be locked before the first 10 posts, if not by you then by another mod, and it would have happened regardless of how the discussion unfolded.

There are a billion other places on the internet to discuss this. This thread is not a complete disaster yet, but people are already accusing others of arguing in bad faith, so it’s on its way. It feels like a double standard that this thread was started and is still going.

I do like your response to that reader, though. It is a great reflection of your character.

Please do not take this post as a criticism of how you run the site and boards in general. I just think this particular thread was a mistake.

I saw your post, didn't read the linked article...

Thomas Jolly, the artistic director behind the flamboyant opening ceremony, said the scene had not been inspired by "The Last Supper" and depicted a pagan feast linked to the gods of Olympus.

"You will never find in my work a desire to denigrate anyone or anything," Jolly told broadcaster BFMTV.

I'd hope we all respect each other enough her to not go down that road... I'm not the only person genuinely curious about how this is making a mockery of Christianity. And I'm not trying to play a game of gotcha either... Just curious because I genuinely don't see it.

I will say we’ve all kind of deviated from Joe’s question. Whether you think it was intended as some are taking and/or meant as mocking - how should people react to being mocked? Hard to tell others what to do but I would just ignore it.

ETA - I’ve always told my kids to ignore people. Don’t get pushed around and challenge bullies but most things in life are just best ignored. Like trolls in the PSF.

Only one person is making the bolded accusation and I find it really disappointing. Watching that video, nothing is really obvious to me about the intent of the designer/choregrapher, but I guess I’m gaslighting and acting in bad faith.

I don't.

I heard the story about the Last Supper mocking, but didn't care to really find out more. Now, thanks to this thread, I have seen the video, and learned about The Greek God Dionysus. He seemed like a fun guy

is this a quote from an article? if it was depicting a feast I don't think its a stretch that some may have mistook it as mocking TLS.

is this a quote from an article? if it was depicting a feast I don't think its a stretch that some may have mistook it as mocking TLS.
Both parts were quoted, yes. From the article Mitchie posted up thread.

The screen grab that seems to be getting discussed does look a lot like TLS. But the video doesn't really.

Either way, I'm still trying to understand how that's a mockery of Christianity. Ivan said it was because of the artists intent, which doesn't seem to be the case. And if it was, still leaves some explanation as to why that would be offensive.

I didn’t notice in realtime the image and no idea if that was the intent by the art director or whatever that person is called. It definitely looked like it was an artistic interpretation of The Last Supper to me once you show them next to each other. But I would say, who cares. I can only guarantee you of one thing in this whole scenario. Jesus loves those drag queens.

Once someone took the out of context screengrab and placed it next to the painting I can see how people fell for it.

But here is the actual video

You only have to watch about the first 15 seconds to see how the scene was obviously not the last supper and how it was intentionally taken out of context to appear that way by the extremist website. And people bought it hook, line, and sinker.

Part of the problem is that these extremist websites that were essentially tabloids in the past are now somehow considered legitimate sources. Another part of the problem is that certain legitimate sources did pick it up too, to at least placate the people whose outrage had been manufactured.

Seeing the context, I feel like I've been trolled by the person who pulled the screenshot we've all seen. I haven't watched the opening ceremonies but assumed as so many others have that this bit was was a riff on DaVinci's painting based on the picture that was widely circulated. But that's obviously not the case when you see the context. I feel like I've learned this lesson many times over and over but still get suckered by still shots without context from time to time.

Yep. Have seen these images posted on Facebook and other places. Had no idea how deeply misleading this outrage was until seeing the video posted here. Good stuff.

Had the intent been to create a tableau of drag queens that mirrored the Last Supper, with a central figure bearing a halo in imitation of Jesus, it would be clearly be intentional mockery and offensive to Christians. As it is, because the creator made a clear and apparently sincere statement that this was not the intent, it seems reactionary to perpetuate the story.

As I mentioned earlier, the menage a trois was plenty to be offended by if you're a sincere Christian, as is the glamorization of drag queens at all. But neither of these is particularly surprising in a show meant to highlight the culture and history of Paris.

Overall, this Christian found the presentation generally charming, a good representation of Paris, and somewhat disappointing in its offensive elements as I don't think there's any place for controversy in the Olympic ceremonies.

It seems to me that if this is interpreted as a "mockery" of Christianity, that's a tacit acknowledgment that there is no room for LGBTQ in Christianity. Modern recreations of classic works are common. No one says the Lion King is mocking Hamlet. The difference here is the actors are flamboyant models and cross-dressers.

That was so weird. The fact that there were loads of them was even stranger. I did make an Anne Boleyn joke. I may be a jerk.

No, it isn't.

But I did come to buy an argument.

Try not to get worried, try not to turn on to
Problems that upset you oh don't you know
Everything's alright, yes, everything's fine
And we want you to sleep well tonight
Let the world turn without you tonight
If we try we'll get by so forget all about us tonight

as is the glamorization of drag queens at all.
Serious question. Is there something "wrong" with drag queens in the christian view?
It depends on the Christian but I would say the modern blurring of gender roles undermines the Christian worldview and ultimately the centuries old understanding of the importance of the family and the understanding of the Church as the bride of Christ. This topic has considerable complexity that is well beyond the scope of this conversation but there are plenty of resources out there for anyone who would like to dig deeper.

Haven't gender roles always been kinda blurred when it comes to theater and performance?

But I truly have no idea what the person meant. If he meant it to be a take on the Da Vinci painting, I would have said, that’s kind of cool - I wouldn’t have immediately gone to mocking.
The artist should have shown a bit of parody equality (and cajones) and lampooned Muhammed, as well.

But, nah, take the easy target and cower in the corner. I expect nothing less is this post morality age.

Yes and no imo.

I'm not sure if that's the same thing though.
