Christians And Mocking - How To Handle? (1 Viewer)

Thomas Jolly, the artistic director behind the flamboyant opening ceremony, said the scene had not been inspired by "The Last Supper" and depicted a pagan feast linked to the gods of Olympus.
is this a quote from an article? if it was depicting a feast I don't think its a stretch that some may have mistook it as mocking TLS.
Agreed. I was raised catholic so I thought it may have been a parody of the last supper. I also know and recognize that about every Catholic/christian tradition has roots in paganism and I studied Dyonesian ethics in college so I concluded it was drawing inspiration from that.

As to Joe’s actual question about how one should respond to being mocked, I have some serious thoughts, but my half-joking response is to take a page out of Newt Gingrich’s response and make it a way bigger deal and ignore fact at all cost when responding.

I didn’t notice in realtime the image and no idea if that was the intent by the art director or whatever that person is called. It definitely looked like it was an artistic interpretation of The Last Supper to me once you show them next to each other. But I would say, who cares. I can only guarantee you of one thing in this whole scenario. Jesus loves those drag queens.

Once someone took the out of context screengrab and placed it next to the painting I can see how people fell for it.

But here is the actual video

You only have to watch about the first 15 seconds to see how the scene was obviously not the last supper and how it was intentionally taken out of context to appear that way by the extremist website. And people bought it hook, line, and sinker.

Part of the problem is that these extremist websites that were essentially tabloids in the past are now somehow considered legitimate sources. Another part of the problem is that certain legitimate sources did pick it up too, to at least placate the people whose outrage had been manufactured.
OK, holy crap does that COMPLETELY change the conversation. Thank you for posting that.

This is just yet another slam dunk piece of evidence that people need to get off social media. It would probably be a good idea to consider dropping any feed or stop going to any site that just show the pic and don't have a further discussion about it. Obviously just feeding into our chimp brains and outrage for clicks and money.

I would think framing the shot with twelve apostles would have been a pretty obvious basic requirement if this was supposed to be a last supper imitation. They didn't do that, that I could see.

TBH when I was reading reactions before seeing the picture, I was expecting more a purposeful pose to mimic the painting. I guess like Arrested Development style. It just looked a bit random, especially with the random dude on the right. The video makes a complete non issue, unless I missed something. After seeing that it looked like a model runway with a bunch of drag queens, and people on both sides of said runway.

Your vision is 20/20. Trolls gonna troll.

This might be a bad idea
I respect you Joe, but I’m going to have to agree here.

This is clearly in the realm of topics that we’ve been asked to avoid, and frankly, I would bet that if anyone else started this thread, it would be locked before the first 10 posts, if not by you then by another mod, and it would have happened regardless of how the discussion unfolded.

There are a billion other places on the internet to discuss this. This thread is not a complete disaster yet, but people are already accusing others of arguing in bad faith, so it’s on its way. It feels like a double standard that this thread was started and is still going.

I do like your response to that reader, though. It is a great reflection of your character.

Please do not take this post as a criticism of how you run the site and boards in general. I just think this particular thread was a mistake.

We were asked not to start religious threads??
Judging from the title, I thought this was going to be something along the lines of “how do I react when someone mocks my Christian faith to my face or in online correspondence?”

This wasn’t that. It was a post about the latest outrage in the left-right culture wars. We have absolutely been told not to post about those.

Thank you for posting the video and adding context to the still image. I was wrong to think it was mocking in this instance. The bigger question still stands though about how one should respond to actual mocking. It's not always easy but I think assuming the best and trying to have thick skin is always best.

It's The Last Supper reenacted with drag queens.
How are you getting "Last Supper" from this?

I think it’s easier to see if you look at this

But I truly have no idea what the person meant. If he meant it to be a take on the Da Vinci painting, I would have said, that’s kind of cool - I wouldn’t have immediately gone to mocking.
The artist should have shown a bit of parody equality (and cajones) and lampooned Muhammed, as well.

But, nah, take the easy target and cower in the corner. I expect nothing less is this post morality age.
The Greek god of wine Dionysus is an easy target I guess
