Eric Weddle (1 Viewer)

Weddle had 11 solo tackles on Sunday. Through the first 5 weeks of the season he had a combined 14 solo tackles. How did that happen? Did he play more of a SS role instead of FS? Basically, trying to judge his future production.

Still playing mostly single high deep safety with a rare run blitz called for him now and then. Missed tackles in the front seven and pretty poor play from Paul Oliver put him in position to make a lot of tackles outside the box last week. Still likely to be more down than up weeks this year in his current role.

I know there are a couple of Gregory threads going, but assuming he comes back over Oliver, is Gregory or Weddle the better play going forward?

The previous consensus seemed to be that Weddle's numbers exploded due to Gregory's absence. Is this still the case or has Weddle's play improved and look to be consistent throughout the remainder of the season?

I'd like to know this too. I own Gregory and Oliver, and would like to have some clarity on this situation before I start either of them. I'm seeing Weddle projected way ahead of Oliver this week, with Gregory not ranked at all. To me this means we expect Weddle to be the SS playing up in the box and Oliver starting at FS. Good assumption? Is there any way to know for sure before Sunday?

Just a guess, but the initial projections were done without the benefit of Wed practice information. I think Gregory is practicing, which would -- if the W9 plan holds -- send Oliver to the bench. Also guessing that John feels the spread offense is a better matchup for Weddle at FS than Gregory at SS, but I think it's really tough to project the SD safeties right now. Would put both in the risky DB3++ tier.

For what it's worth.....

Weddle was in on 6 plays compared to Gregory's 2. Weddle had 3 tackles, a PD and broke up 2 other plays before the injury to Gregory early in the second quarter. Gregory had 1 solo, 1 assist during that same time. They both started the game and played all snaps leading up to the injury. Weddle played up in the box on at least 2 plays during this time also and stopped Foster for -1 yards on one of those plays.

Maybe Weddle is starting to come around now. I have a feeling he is.

Thought I'd bring this up because I found it to be quite interesting. In Norton's small write-up on Weddle in the dynasty rankings, he referred to him as inconsistent, stating:

"Weddle always seems to have numbers at the end of the season but his week to week inconsistency is like playing Russian roulette with your lineup."

Just curious why in the world he would refer to Weddle as inconsistent. If there's one reason to like a guy like Weddle, it is that he is consistent from week to week but lacks the monster games. He stated just the opposite. Then, Larkin's write-up begins as this:

"Consistency personified at the safety position..."

Two completely opposite opinions, but have to say that Larkin hits the nail on its head. Just frustrating to read such comments by Norton, because it makes you hesitant to trust some of the stuff you read on here. Hate to nitpick, but just wondering how in the world Eric Weddle can be referred to as inconsistent.

I love PFF approach to grading players, this is from their top 100 players of 2012:

15. Eric Weddle, S, San Diego Chargers (66th) <---Last years ranking for him.

Weddle just keeps getting better, and while the Chargers can’t be happy with their year, they’ve got to be impressed with the consistency of their star defensive player. Our top-ranked safety graded positively in every area, showing himself capable of manning the deep middle of the field and coming up to support in the run game. The premier player in the league at his position.

Best Performance: Week 14 at Pittsburgh, +4.5

Key Stat: When he played in the box he led all safeties with a 17.4% Run Stop Percentage.
