ESPN Amateur Broadcast Hour - Mike & Mike Suck (1 Viewer)

I'm not sure why ESPN keeps parading Mike & Mike out once a year to do play-by-play. Any college broadcast team in the nation would have done a better job than those clowns.

Some of Greenburg's commentary was laughable. On one punt return, instead of identifying the player or where the ball was received, he simply said "Here he comes." He then ignored the gained yardage and ended the play with a simple "He's out at the 40."

Meanwhile, Golic was talking over Greenburg with priceless gems like "Oh Wow!", "What A Catch", and "Man, what a play".

The entire broadcast had the air of a very amateur feel.

I have to admit, I'm not really a fan of Mike & Mike in the morning either. I think when Erik Kaselius sits in, he does a much better job on the show.

I understand they are trying to appeal to the masses with their stupid husband / wife relationship like banter and arguing over the most meaningless points; and the overall point is to be entertaining. For me, it gets old quick, and I can certainly do without Greenburg playing the role of metrosexual pansy and Golic playing dumb brute.

Their shtick certainly doesn't translate over into a broadcast booth though. ESPN makes a mistake every year when they put those clowns on a game.

In Greenberg's first 30 seconds on air...he proclaimed that Russell was the 1st overall pick in the 2000 draft.

They are still better than Tony Kornheiser. And they trot him out every freaking week. I'd rather have a once a year problem than a once a week problem.

They've jumped the shark. Their radio show was once a bright spot. Now it's no better than the "whacky" local morning crew with their canned schtick and occasional sports references.

i actually liked them.

they are not knowledgeable, polished, or professional.

they were just a couple of dudes watching a game and seemed to be enjoying themselves.

i don't know if i'd like them doing alot of games, but i really like them from time to time.

knowledgeable analysis is nice, but i'd rather have chemistry and they have that.

it seems like, when there is a booth with a good "analysis guy", that person ends up really annoyed with the "comedy guy" (jaws will strangle korny within the month.)

the 3 mikes weren't perfect, but they have good chemistry and just seem to enjoy watching football together. sadly, that is pretty good when compared to other teams these days.

the other thing is that, nowadays, we have NFL analysis accessable from many outlets. pre-internet and pre-NFL channel, people relied on their announcers for NFL analysis. we don't really need it these days.

imo, all we really need is some guys who get along, make the game fun to watch, and don't distract the viewer by some internal feud.

At one point, for two consecutive plays, the only commentary was Mike Ditka repeatedly saying "oh wow, oh wow, oh wow" over and over again.

Also, on that long pass to Scheffler, which was a pretty long play, there was no excitement or anything. It was just Golic calmly saying "nice play, nice play" while the play was still going on, as if he was commenting on a solid 4 yard run that had just occurred a few seconds before.

Those guys were disturbingly hideous. Although Ditka's frank comments like: "This going down hill fast for the Raiders and it ain't gonna get any better" were somewhat amusing.

yes, there are probably 20 teams that would have been better at calling that game, maybe more. That said, they were perfect for that game.

wait, a thread complaining about the commentators? .............that's odd.
An Internet troll who posts but contributes nothing to the conversation. That's odd.

:brush: :lmao: I enjoyed them for the same reasons; they work well together. We've seen "good analysts" that didn't gel with Joe Theismann and Tony Kornheiser - watching those two was painful.

Oh yes please give me more of Troy Aikman objectively doing a Cowboys game. When talking about the play on the field he used the pronoun "We" an awful lot.

Anyone else catch Ditka talking about the Johnson kid in Tennesee falling all the way to the fourth round?
Yeah, I heard that too. He was talking about how Selvin Young was undrafted and "you never know; that Johnson kid in Tenn fell to the 4th round"

Before the game I was hoping Dikta could save this crew but they all need to be scraped. I've seen high school games on cable access before that were done better from high school student crews.

agreed. the second half was great in part because of them. they were hilarious to listen to. One highlight was a bronco tackling a raider on a punt return and ditka saying "is that Eddie Royal?" :lmao:

While we are talking about the ESPN broadcast:

Whatt's with the TWO INCH bar along the bottom of the screen?

I didn't go out and get a 42" HDTV so I could watch a 40" broadcast.

One more item: Didn't really need the "SC NOW" interruption to tell me Brady is done for the year.

I thought the camera angles were odd and the whole game was dark. Looked like amateur hour all the way around, from the talent on the field to the setup to the broadcast.

Good call. It's not breaking news anymore when my girlfriend knows about it.Oh, and the 3 Mikes were terrible.

The best MNF crew in the last two decades was the one they put out there for one night two years ago with Brad Nessler, Jaworski, and Vermeil. That was heaven on earth for actual football fans. Everything else has been garbage.

:goodposting: Last night's broadcast was as bad as that broadcast two years ago was good.Terrible.

you are kidding right? Tony does not pretend to be an expert. Only reason he is on the broadcast is PTI makes piles of money and is the best thing on the four letter network. He atleast is funny. Mike and Mike trying to be announcers is a traveshamockery perpetrated by the four letter in an attempt to cram them down our throats. I would rather listen to dierdorf ( oh god). They are laughable radio announcers and never say anything involving an original thought. Give me Czaban on FSR any day of the week in the morning.

They are amateurs. They've done what, 2 games? Not to mention the production crew they get is probably also 2nd stringers. They certainly didn't have any sustained tempo for the duration of the game.

Ditka is a lost cause in the booth, the guy grunts and groans during the actual play. I think he popped 10 Cialis pills after Curry dropped that ball on the crossing route. Then he tries to go into an in-depth analysis on a change of possession when they're cutting to commercial.

I'm not sure people here have experienced a really bad commentator. I don't say this to be mean or a jerk. I say this because I had to listen to the Oakland/Denver game with Denny Green as a commentator. I was in a car with a colleague and we tuned into Westwood One on the way back from a business commitment, and his voice was like nails on a chalk board. It was painful.

Anyone catch Greenberg's question to Ditka about Selvin? It was something like "How do you do that? How do you take an undrafted RB and make him the focal point of the offense?" I'm sure MOP appreciated it but, seriously...if Selvin's the focal point of that offense I'm Jay Cutler.

You guys all seem like knowledgeable football minds, so why do you give a damn?

I think they're more or less funny and I had the same thoughts as many of you - it was like watching a football game with two dudes in a living room and the crazy old dude who has forgotten more about football than I will ever know, and is annoyed by everything.

I feel like I know enough about football that I don't need a broadcast crew to spoon feed me analysis in every single game I watch. I'm probably in the minority in that I can enjoy watching a football with just about anyone and don't get outwardly angry at a broadcast crew.

It just cracks me up that the "official" game threads are filled more with angry rants about the broadcast crew than about the actual game.

And there you have it folks, this week's "Water is Wet" post of the year. :own3d: They are classic ESPN, ie goofy and moronic. hyuk hyuk

I loved it when Ditka said when the Raiders were trying to run plays with less than 10 seconds left in the half , "When you give up, that's when you lose the game."

That quote in itself was good, but then with 8 minutes left in the 3rd quarter he says, "They should just give up. It's not gonna get any better."

I don't like Mike and Mike but Ditka always cracks me up. His comment about the Raiders "You can't make chicken salad from chicken ####" made me laugh.

Mike and Mike have serious shortcomings in the booth, but I still find them much easier to listen to than Kornholer. BTW... I happen to like their morning show... so perhaps I am a bit biased... but NOT when it comes to Kornholer.

Second year in a row they rolled out the Mikes for a game and I thought it was entertaining and enjoyable. I often, maybe 60-70% of the time, watch football muted because I'm easily annoyed by the crew, just about every crew, but none is worse than Kornheiser and Co. I mute them before five minutes before they come on air just to be sure I don't accidentally hear something annoying. The Mikes I could listen to every week.

Different strokes for different folks, I guess. My preference would be no play by play announcer. Just the stadium PA guy giving the basic information. "Smith carried for six yards. Jones made the tackle. Penalty flag on the field." Then and without ever interrupting the PA guy, I wouldn't mind a couple ex coaches providing a little color commentary.

That was before Jaws became a "journalist" trying to manufacture intrigue by melodramatically sensationalizing mole hills. I used to love the guy, but now he gives me a headache. Oh btw, I met him many years ago when he was with the LA Rams and I was in high school. He was a good dude. The Rams had a bball team and he was Captain. They came and played our team (I played) for a "stay in school and off drugs" event type thing. We had them on the ropes until a ringer named Tony Gwynn started scoring at will. Jaws hung out with Jack Reynolds and just chatted for a good hour after the other players were gone. He was sincerely reaching out to this small desert community. Bill Walton did something similar once, but he showed up drunk and left early. :hophead:

I have to admit I liked them too- even though their preparation wasn't great. All three of them are good guys and none of them are obnoxiuos blowhards.

I'd rather listen to decent people call a game than these ##### blowhards they keep putting in.

Mike and Mike were just fine. If you want to see poor watch Olberman and Patrick. I can't believe Patrick followed Olberman into his extended career suicide. What a waste of skin!

2 NFL games but they also have done some AFL games so this isn't there 2nd football game

Sorry, should have put in 2nd football game with an audience > 1000.
