Did it take courage for Jenner to undergo her transition in the public spotlight? Yes. Were there more deserving recipients of the award this year. I say yes. Is It possible that Jenner's actions will do a lot of good in terms of helping others who have gender identity issues? I think almost certainly yes. Did Jenner cause the death of that woman in the car accident? From the video, the answer appears to be yes.

I don't think people know how they would react if their kids became transgender until it happened to them. I suspect that some of those here who act intolerant would be much more loving and accepting than even they suppose. I also suspect that some of those here who express acceptance and tolerance might be less accepting if it happened to their kids.

I have an idiot holy-roller aunt who raised the sweetest girl you've ever met. Smart, hard worker, wants to be a nurse. Girl turns 18, starts dating a boy who idiot aunt disapproves of, cuts off tuition payments, kicks her out of the house. Golly, you'd think the girl would come to her senses and dump the boy, but instead she moved in with him and got knocked up. I don't know for sure but I'd bet money the aunt blames Satan for this ghastly turn of events.I'm just the cousin but it's frustrating to watch from afar. But I'd guess every 10 seconds some poor sap gets permanently mind####ed by their parents.

Because she didn't like her boyfriend, the aunt took away all her daughter's options to eventually outgrow that boyfriend. Smart woman.

You leave someone barely out of highshcool without anywhere to go and stop supporting her education, and then you're surprised she moved in with her boyfriend and gets knocked up?

The aunt abandoned her daughter (over something that was none of her business) in the most important stage of her growth into adulthood. She removed her options, pulled the rug out from her, and then sat back and was shocked that stupid things happened. So, you and your friends are shooting right past the "I didn't like Bruce Jenner long before this because he was an attention whore" and the "transsexuals have a mental disability and need psychiatric help" arguments, and rocketing right into the "ostracize an entire group of people and shield our children from them because they're freaks" stance.

Unless you invent a pill, or a surgery, or some other method of changing how their minds are wired, let them be what their minds are wired to be, and don't use words like "serious psychological issues", "freak", or other derogatory methods of describing them. But to be honest it would be frustrating if my son started dating a guy because it was kind of a trend. I don't really see that currently with guys but I do see it with women. Not near the majority but a lot. Like 10-20% if I had to guestimate.

Yes, he still has a penis. Though due to hormones it would be pretty useless. A full "sex change" operation is an extremely expensive, fairly risky, huge step that the majority of the transgender population never undertakes. Obviously Jenner has the resources, but it's not always that simple.

I'm not even sure what you're asking for. A simple google search and an open mind will get you about 80% of what you need, which is just a basic understanding of what it even means to be transgendered. The other 20% you need to intelligently discuss this topic is compassion for what the person is going through. That's harder to come by, because even in 2015 the vast majority of people (especially the majority demographic on FBG's) out there don't actually know anyone in their personal lives who is transgender.I do. One of my best friends in college was a guy named Alex, who became a girl named Laura. Alex was a hell of an athlete, liked to drink cheap beer, and was obsessed with StarCraft2 in college. By our senior year, he felt comfortable telling us that he had always struggled with gender identity, and after years of counseling was going to transition. She's much happier now, with none of the inner demons that had plagued her for over 20 years.

I'm happy to answer any questions I can, although my knowledge is strictly what I've read and what I learned being friends with someone going through this.

Just remember--ignorance is innocent until it's been brought to your attention. Then, if you refuse to educate yourself, it becomes malicious. I don't think you meant to be insulting towards the trans community with your comments (although I think you knew it was insensitive and didn't care). I think you just honestly are in over your head with a difficult topic that doesn't fit everyone's world-view. That can change, though.

Seeing a 6'2" former man with a deep voice in a white sequin dress and high heels is a little jarring on the eyes. Must have been what your daddy felt when interracial marriage laws were done away with and what your ancestors whined about when blacks were granted freedom and rights. Bigotry is a learned behavior and I'm sorry you are no doubt teaching your kids the same pattern of fear, unacceptance, intolerance and hatred that you were taught.

Not at all. I've seen interviews with Jenner where she seems a little confused and uncomfortable at times. Seeing a 6'2" former man with a deep voice in a white sequin dress and high heels is a little jarring on the eyes. The important thing to do, unlike what GM did in here, is to resist the initial negative impulse and afford the person with the basic rights and respect that all people deserve.

Right. We don't all have to like each other all the time. We should, however, all tolerate each other and treat others the way we would like to be treated.
