ESPYs thread (1 Viewer)

That sucks. I had no idea he was sick. The last time I heard him give a speech was when he gave my commencement speech. It was good, but certainly can't compare to that one.

And a really bad review of that trainwreck?

This is a fill-in since it ended early ...right?

ETA: who the #### are these people???

I typically DVR the ESPY's, and watch them later. Not a priority/must-watch, by any means, but I have enjoyed bits and pieces of them, over the years. I watched last night (still on DVR, so I could skip through the commercials, etc.), and came to the realization that 90% of the reason I enjoy watching is because of the non-typical awards... In other words, the Arthur Ashe award for courage, the Jimmy V award, the Pat Tillmarn award for service, etc. Those were, for the most part, great as usual.

I didn't know the details behind Stuart Scott's story (knew he had battled cancer, but that's about it). Watching his speech (which was really well-done), I couldn't help but wonder/hope that we don't hear about his passing in the next few weeks/months. He just looks extremely frail, compared to what he was, and the news about his deteriorating health, in the past week or so, can't be good (several surgeries, kidney failure, etc.). It just sounds like the 7-year battle with cancer has taken it's toll on him, frankly. Yet, his outlook on life, and how he approaches his daily fight, is pretty amazing.

I also didn't know the back-story behind Michael Sam's childhood. Of his 6 (or 7?) siblings, one drowned, one was shot to death, two went to prison, and one simply "disappeared". That's a lot to deal with, not to mention his father leaving them, his mom's beliefs (that football was evil, based on her Jehovah's Witness background), etc. I can't help but pull for the guy, if for no other reason than I'd like to see him prove the naysayers wrong.

Other than those types of stories, the ESPY's is really nothing more than celebrity-watching, for me. Don't really care who wins best team, etc. I do enjoy being reminded of the great plays/games of the past year, to a certain degree, I suppose. That Auburn/Bama game was amazing, the crazy 3 by Lillard to win a playoff series, etc. The comedy is usually terrible (one funny joke for about every 10 bad ones), and Drake was brutal, for the most part. He even had trouble pronouncing certain names (Manziel).

My wife's two comments were 1) Why is this Drake guy hosting instead of Justin Timberlake (who is much funnier) and 2) Taye Diggs must have split up with Idina Menzel (AKA Adele Dazeem, according to John Travolta).

Lastly, Skylar Diggins is unbelievably hot, but I think she's much better looking without all of the makeup.

Scott's speech was really good.

When he said "beating cancer is how you live with it, just not if you beat it" (paraphrasing obviously) I thought to myself he may have just got some really bad news. Hope not.

Hated his shtick but he seems like a good dude.

I thought it was telling that Stuart said he was amending his answer of "I'm still here, not losing to cancer" to something along the lines of dying doesn't equal losing. I'm afraid he's near the end.

My mom has 4 more chemo treatments after her battle with breast cancer (and they have taken a toll) so that speech really broke me down. I'll remember him and all those fighting this terrible disease in my prayers.

Suzy's pick speech tonight... She was fighting back the tears. He must have taken another turn for the worse

It's that time again -- on ABC this year.

Caitlyn Jenner gets the Arthur Ashe Courage Award for chopping her #### off when there were several more worthy candidates. But... ratings!

Totally disgusting and transparent ploy for ratings for their stupid award show. Moving it to ABC was the icing on the cake.

Lindsey Vonn.
Yea, she's pretty ugly.

I may follow you on twitter. You better be entertaining.
I am. Just make sure to mute me on weekdays. A bunch of us talk about Mike Francesa's show as it's happening, and that's not for everyone.
What's the gist of your hate for Francesa?
I don't "hate" anyone except for Flo from Progressive. The thing with Francesa is too complicated to get into. In a nutshell, he's a blowhard who bullies his callers, yet he's also entertaining. It makes for quite a conundrum.

Good enough, thanks. And I kind of love Flo.

Whenever her speech starts, it'll probably be a good idea to log off of Twitter for 12 hours or so.
