ESPYs thread (1 Viewer)

Did anybody actually watch the show or are they just here to argue about Jenner?
I watched it. But I'd estimate that 90% of the Jenner hate on my Facebook page over the last 14 hours is posted by people who didn't watch it. It's the same people who post that God is going to punish America because we as a country are vilifying the LGBT community less and less. We need to vilify them to keep God happy. If we had a volcano we should throw one in every day to keep him happy.
On my facebook page I can't decide who I hate more. The first I bolded or the second group who are athiest and mock anybody who believes in a God.

@CraigSJ: You think that 40% trans suicide rate is nuts until you put someone trans on national TV for ten minutes and see how people react.
40%?I wonder what percentage of them were married twice, had several children, were over the age of 60, and stood to make millions of dollars off of there transition?

As I've said before, I really feel bad for the bullied high school kid (male or female) who is having gender identity issues but this girl/guy? I could care less and I'm tired of seeing him/her.
Do you think maybe its possible that the bullied high school kid who is having tender identity issues might be comforted by seeing the person you're tired of seeing being publicly accepted as transgender and honored for her courage? Do you think it might even be possible that Jenner's appearance and the content of the speech saved lives? Because it seems more than just possible to me; it actually seems pretty likely.
Of course it helps the overall cause and the bullied HS kid but it's tainted by all the money being made.Jenner could have made awareness and done good things without making a buttload of money.
So your argument is that we shouldn't do something that likely will save lives of high school kids who are contemplating suicide if those efforts are "tainted" by profit?

What do you think could have been done to raise awareness and demonstrate acceptance without involving the media (and therefore profits)?
See my point about donating 100% of the money Jenner is making to charity.

Jenner can still be a great ambassador for the issue.
Why should he be obligated to donate all of it for this for it to mean anything? Unless you think he only became a woman for the money which is utterly ridiculous. He's an ambassador for the issue just by being a public figure. Sure, donating would be great, but him not doing so doesnt invalidate the effect he has on other trans people.

I never understood the whole money is evil absolute. As if you wouldn't accept the cash if ABC threw piles of money at you to interview you.

Question for the people who insist on calling her Bruce even though she prefers to be known as Caitlyn- do you do that with other famous people? Like do you call Jamie Foxx "Eric Bishop" and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar "Lew Alcindor"? If not, why not? If so, congratulations- you're the worst.
If you don't get the difference, you're an idiot. And I call him Bruce.

But you probably had that figured out.
I guess I'm an idiot. Can you explain the difference to me? I'd appreciate an education from someone brighter than me.
Oh I don't know. The fact that he changed his name to a female name because he now wants to be considered a she but still has a penis and the others didn't. Maybe that.

Glad I could help.
. So changing your name to avoid the draft is better?

So your position is that if people change their name because they want to get more acting jobs, or signify their religious beliefs, or hide their religious/ethnic heritage, or assist their Heisman Trophy campaign, or sell more rap albums, those wishes should be respected. But if they have a penis and they want to use a name that's normally reserved for women that wish should not be respected?

Is that accurate? If so, why is that your position?
Because I consider him a freak and I don't the others.

And look - I know my feelings are not tolerant, accepting, politically correct and all that, but it's what I think. I'm not going to apologize for feeling the way I do about him, but I will apologize if it bothers you. It is what it is. He's transgender and wants to be called Caitlyn. I believe him to be a guy and feel like calling him Caitlyn would lend some sort of acknowledgement that he's a woman, when he isn't.

I really don't care if my take is unpopular or subjects to me to scorn. That's my take. You are free to have your own.

Bruce Jenner is not sports original tranny. Renee Richards came out in 1975 when times were much different and actually had all the surgery that Bruce has not had as of yet. If any tranny should have been honored for courage last night it should have been Richards.

This is awkward
I am watching the video now on You Tube.

I watched this guy as a 6 year old kid win the Decathlon. It's kinda weird man. It's like a bad drag show.

The only thing that is odd to me about all of it is how late to the party he is.

Other than that who cares.

Glad to see the entire situation is reaching its tipping point.
How so
We're beginning to see more and more opposition towards Bruce Jenner. On top of that, we're starting to see more support for this opposition. The more he prances around as a 60 year old delusional man, the more people are realizing there is nothing normal or courageous about the situation.

I don't think anyone has a problem with anyone mutilating their body. But the situation is quickly switching from courageous to train wreck each passing day.

That's what you took out of all of this huh

Receiving a high profile "courage" award on national television in prime time is usually a good indicator the tide is turning against you.

Did any of them cut their d**k off first?

Dunno, I never saw them naked. Why does that matter to you?

For the record, he/she hasn't done that either.

so couragious! i mean, the courage! couragious!!!

fyi - if you strapped me down and had TRE straddle me, you still couldn't force/make me care enough about the ESPYs. what a bunch of self promotional artificially created nonsense.

He's got a point. I thought bigotry towards LGBT was significantly less today than it was years ago. The past day has revealed just how prevalent the bigotry still is. It's the like the country regressed 10 years in 24 hours.

People aren't suddenly becoming bigoted. It's just that the past month has been really hard on bigots and their views. All the pent up rage is now being let out now making it seem like its widespread.

You are probably right. I forgot how much bigots have been victimized over the past month. I should show them more compassion as they vent their hate.

:goodposting:

They need to get out and do some fingerblasting to relieve some of that pent up hostility.

god bless you for being the thread referee. guess the guys that joined the board in 2013 were given this responsibility.

Saw this gem on Facebook:

"If anything Jenner ran from being a man. Courage is facing adversity"

That's-a spicy meatball.

You could have cared less by ignoring this thread. But you didn't.
This thread talked about the ESPYs, not Bruce Jenner.
Then why did you post about Bruce Jenner, when a) you dont care about him, and b) this isnt a Bruce Jenner thread?
Why do you care so much about people posting whether or not they care about Jenner?

I don't care for this debate on caring.

I still call Prince "Prince".

I think its pretty clear that ESPN made the right call giving the award to Jenner instead of Lauren Hill. Because no one really appears to give a damn about Hill, while everyone seems to have an opinion about Jenner.

A friend of mine (who tends to spend time in the ultra-conservative/crazy parts of the internet) just posted on FB that Jenner only did the Sawyer interview on the condition that he/she would receive the Ashe award. (according to something he read)

Seems like nonsense, but I'm sure it will be a mainstream theory among the anti-Jenner folks soon enough.

It's just odd. I dont care about the US Open so I dont post in the US Open thread or even read it. Same with the stock thread or baseball threads. Maybe I should go into every thread I dont post in and let everyone know how little I care about whatever conversation they're having.

That's impossible. According to Cappy, nobody has ever heard of the Ashe award.

Jenner is more controversial (didn't watch it though).

I liked the Hill story. Thanks for posting it earlier.

So does he now! Although that was a weird case because there was no obvious way to pronounce that symbol thing.

John Oliver should be required viewing on this subject, as he is with pretty much every subject he tackles:

“If you’re still wondering ‘What do I call a transgender person? It’s so confusing!’ Actually, it’s pretty simple — call them whatever they want to be called,” Oliver continues. “You can do it, we do it all the time. Think of it this way — David Evans woke up one day and said, ‘Everyone call me The Edge’ and we all went, ‘Fine, The Edge. Are we talking the noun or the verb?’

“And it’s not just that. Over the past 20 years, we’ve agreed to call this man Puff Daddy, P. Diddy, just Diddy and now Puff Daddy again ... and most people don’t even like him!"

I would describe Hill's story as more inspirational than courageous. That's not a knock on her at all. Based on the comments in this thread alone I think it's fair to say Jenner's decision took courage.

Hill was the definition of courageous and inspirational. Her story was amazing and should be celebrated.

Who's on your Arthur Ashe Award Watch List for next year? Also, how was the party?

Because it is in the subject line and that is what a majority of the talk about is his speech.

Well that and Lauren Hill can't come and give a speech.

(Miss) Lauryn Hill could have stood in but she would have showed up an hour late and refused to play her hits.

You guys know they did big things for Hill and for Leah Still, right? They got everyone in there. No tears or Eddie Murphy genitals were left unjerked after last night's ESPYs.
