Explosion and building collapse in Harlem (1 Viewer)

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – The FDNY says there has been an explosion and partial collapse of a building in East Harlem.

It happened around 9 a.m. at a building on Park Avenue between 114th and 117th streets, the FDNY said. Fire was reported in the building and smoke could be seen rising from the area.

Metro-North said it happened in a building adjacent to the tracks. Service in and out of Grand Central Terminal is suspended until further notice.

The bomb squad is responding as a precaution. There’s no word yet of any injuries.

Many reported hearing a loud explosion and began posting pictures of the scene on Twitter.

They probably should see if a resident was "cooking up" something, jus sayin....

Minor injuries? Was the building vacant? The injuries to people nearby and not in the building, I assume?

I'd be amazed if two buildings collapsed and there's only 16 injuries total. Street looks like a mouth missing a tooth.

At least one person was killed when two buildings collapsed in East Harlem on Wednesday morning, according to authorities, and a senior city official suggested that there would most likely be more fatalities.

Witnesses reported hearing what sounded like an explosion before the buildings collapsed. Flames and smoke could be seen billowing from the street, and the force of the damage blew out windows in neighboring buildings.

At least 16 people were injured, including four seriously, according to city officials. The police said that two residential buildings — 1644 and 1646 Park Avenue — had collapsed.

“This is an occupied building, there were people living there, we have people missing,” the senior official said. “There was a complete collapse; the fire is still going so we can’t make a search. There will be fatalities.”

The Fire Department said it received the first report at 9:31 a.m. and was still working to determine the cause.

In the immediate aftermath, witnesses described a panicked scene, with people running, unsure what was happening.

So one confirmed death but they expect more fatalities

Guy that lives next door says he was complaining about a gas smell last night.
This seems to be the cause.Smelling gas for weeks??

“For weeks we've been smelling gas," said Ashley Rivera, 21, holding back tears. "We saw people flying out of the window. ... Those are my neighbors."

A law enforcement source told the Daily News the cause appeared to be a gas explosion

My apt is about 10 blocks south of that location. Decided to work from home today and heard the explosion, which was quite loud. There is a lot street noise in this area, and the sound overpowered it all.

The explosion happened right next to the Metro North tracks. Tons of debris fell onto the tracks so the service has been suspended. Westchester commuterguys look to be stuck in NYC for the time being.

Can you guess which one it is not the top story on?

Sounds similar to the 420 State Street (Brooklyn) gas explosion in July, 2000. That one blew out a 5-story, 25 foot wide brownstone. Gas leak was the culprit. Terrible tragedy, lost two elderly neighbors who had just returned from vacation.

Loudest thing I've ever heard, and shook our building four blocks away.

We Christians can tell you that this is the Holy Spirit getting His vengence upon the sinners of New York. The Holy Spirit comes in the name of God to murder those that hate God's son Christ. An example of this can be seen at the end of the movie, Raiders of the Lost Ark. All Christians know of these truths.
