Explosion in New York City (1 Viewer)

After zeroing in on Rahami and learning of the car that had traveled between New Jersey and New York, authorities pulled it over Sunday night after it headed in the direction of Kennedy airport. The law enforcement officials said at least one of Rahami's relatives was in the car.

All five were questioned and released, Sweeney said. He declined to say whether they might later face charges.
Sounds like he borrowed soemone's car to travel back and forth. No mention of weapons in the car.

That discussion started when one guy Otis wrote that he wanted this man tortured. I don't think that's a good idea and I wrote why. I don't especially think it's partisan: plenty of conservatives agree with me, and plenty of liberals agree with Otis. It just depends on your POV.
My POV is I want nice people to not get kilt. TIA

Oh but they will be later. I'm going to get a double cheeseburger with onions, jalapenos, and mayo. It will in custody of my gut.

:bag: sorry that one sucked but I saw Five Guys and got excited.
I thought that was interesting wording by the commish. I suppose if you question someone endlessly you're not in custody per se.

He did not say they were released but I may be parsing semantics

I wish one of these threads would actually focus on the facts of the case and not devolve into a partisan pissing match over rights/constitution/mine is bigger than yours...

Dare to dream
I try to avoid the mine is bigger than yours arguments.

Father previously reported his son, the suspect, to the FBI- calling him a "terrorist".

As details continued to emerge about Ahmad Khan Rahami, the 28-year-old named as the only suspect in the bombings, his father said Tuesday that he had previously called the FBI about his son.

Rahami’s father spoke briefly to a scrum of reporters, offering relatively few details before climbing into an SUV and leaving. He also told reporters that his son was violent toward other family members “for no reason.”

A federal law enforcement official confirmed that they did look into the father’s comments and opened what is known as an assessment, a relatively low-scale probe.

The father went on to recant his comments, but agents conducted interviews and checked databases as part of this effort, said the official, who asked not to be identified. It did not immediately appear that the investigation was as intensive as the FBI’s investigation of Omar Mateen, the Orlando gunman who opened fire inside a nightclub there earlier this year.

Weird that this thread died off so quickly.

they caught the guy, and so far there's no additional real new news.

there's a LOT of police presence on the streets- between the bombs and the 2 cop shootings elsewhere... but otherwise, the city goes on, business as usual.

I mentioned in the NYC thread- my kids' school got word from NYPD on Tuesday (day after the arrest) that there was a suspicious package in the neighborhood that was under investigation. The school went into Lock Down, getting all kids inside from lunch/recess and locking the doors with nobody in or out until advised. the kids went about their normal day- just indoors.

I asked 4th grade son how he felt, if he was scared (he was playing soccer on the roof play-yard during recess when the overseeing teacher screamed at everybody to GET INSIDE, NOW!). only thing he came away with from the experience... the girl he has a crush on was scared and hugged him tight, wouldn't let go. that was his sum total experience of his school's first official lock down. and don't worry- Nathan Jessup has already been alerted about the hug.

They are now looking to speak to the two guys that took the unexploded pressure cooker out of the suitcase and walked away with the suitcase. I also heard that his sister said he was blowing up things in his backyard. I would imagine someone else heard that too.

those guys... sooooo lucky that thing didn't blow up on them like the one did with the robot in NJ.

The bozo from Somalia who had the knife in St. Cloud, MN was shot by an off duty policeman who of course was carrying.  Right place at the right time with the right equipment.

Kudos to the shooter or it could have been bad.
ST. CLOUD, Minn. (KMSP) - The family of the Dahir Adan, the suspect in the St. Cloud mall attack, held a funeral for their son and released a statement on Friday regarding the investigation.

St. Cloud police say on Sept. 17, Adan stabbed 10 people in the Crossroads Center Mall before an off-duty police officer shot and killed him.

The family attorney released the following statement from Adan's family:

"Today we buried our son, Dahir Adan. His funeral was attended by his family, friends and members of the community. Dahir Adan was a son, a brother and a grandchild. Not only was he a bright and hardworking young man, but he also achieved a lot during his short life. He will be missed dearly by his family, friends and all those who knew him in the St. Cloud community.

As we continue to express our deepest sympathy and condolences to all those injured and pray for their speedy recovery, we demand a timely, transparent and full investigation of the circumstances surrounding the incident that led to the death of our son, Dahir Adan. As a family, we deserve to know the truth about his tragic death. We also believe that the St. Cloud community and, indeed, Minnesotans deserve the truth as well.

As they conduct their investigation, we demand and expect from the law enforcement agencies to thoroughly gather and preserve all the evidence relating to this incident including the relevant evidence at the site of the incident both electronic and otherwise.

As we requested previously, we urge all not to rush to judgement or conclusions until all the facts are known. We continue to ask everyone to respect our privacy during this difficult time. We will make further statements as more facts about the incident become available."

so they're looking for a thorough and transparent investigation as to why their kid stabbed a bunch of people? or just the shooting him dead while he tried to stab a bunch of people? I'm all for it.. where "it" is both parts.

Be safe

All completely quiet now.

sounded like con-ed explosion in manhole covers... Kinda muffled. Definitely different than things like debris box dropping on pavement or truck banging by.

but all quiet, and like I said- nobody on the sidewalk even batted an eye or stopped... all normal even immediately after the "boom"s.

and a good idea to stand at my widows to keep an eye out for...more explosions.

Why do they keep saying the shooter is unconscious? He got shot in the arm and was talking while on the stretcher.

Is he awake yet?

guilty.

right around the corner from kids' school- still amazed nobody was killed.  rahimi put that bomb in the best possible bomb-containment item he could've found.

from CNN:

(CNN)A jury found Ahmad Rahimi guilty of eight federal charges Monday in connection with a September 2016 bombing that wounded 30 people in New York.

After a two-week trial and roughly four hours of jury deliberation, Rahimi was convicted of charges including the use and attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction, bombing a public place, destroying property by means of fire or explosives, and using a destructive device in furtherance of a crime of violence -- namely, the use and attempted use of weapons of mass destruction. Rahimi faces a mandatory sentence of life in prison, according to a statement from acting US Attorney for the Southern District of New York Joon H. Kim.

Rahimi was arrested and charged after a pressure cooker bomb went off in New York's Chelsea neighborhood the night of September 17 last year. A second pressure cooker bomb was found a few blocks away, on 27th Street, but didn't detonate.

Earlier the same day, a bomb went off near the start of a Marine Corps charity run in Seaside Park, New Jersey.

"Swift and resolute justice"

"Rahimi's crimes of hate have been met with swift and resolute justice," Kim said in the statement. "Today's verdict is a victory for New York City, a victory for America in its fight against terror, and a victory for all who believe in the cause of justice."

Rahimi did not show any emotion as the verdict was read in court.

"Last September, Rahimi set out to harm innocent people who were simply living their lives one Saturday evening," FBI Assistant Director William F. Sweeney Jr. said in a statement. "He underestimated the resilience of New Yorkers as well as the resolution of the FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force to see justice served."

Rahimi faces separate charges in other jurisdictions in connection with the bomb that went off in Seaside Park, a backpack containing improvised explosive devices found the following day at a transit station in Elizabeth, New Jersey, and a shootout he had with police before being taken into custody.

The FBI, NYPD, New York State Police and the Linden New Jersey Police Department all collaborated in order to identify and locate Rahimi within 50 hours of the Chelsea bombings, NYPD Commissioner James P. O'Neill said.

"Today's verdict is the most forceful deterrent for anyone considering waging terror in our city," O'Neill said in a statement.

Defense attorneys did not make statements outside of court after the verdict was handed down.

The evidence

During the trial, the prosecution presented evidence -- including DNA and fingerprints -- linking Rahimi to the bombs that were placed in New Jersey and New York.

"By some miracle, no one was killed that day," Assistant US Attorney Shawn Crowley said in her opening statement in the trial.

The prosecution also showed jurors home surveillance and cell phone footage allegedly showing Rahimi testing explosives in his backyard with his wife in New Jersey, just days before the explosions.

Prosecutors argued that Rahimi was influenced by Osama bin Laden, ISIS and al Qaeda. They used Rahimi's Internet search history to show that he believed he was a soldier involved in a holy war. They also displayed excerpts from Rahimi's personal notebooks, which talked about attacking non-believers and included phrases like "death to your oppressor," during the trial.

Fifty-two witnesses were called by the prosecution, including some tearful victims from the night of the Chelsea bombings.

While the defense did not present a case, defense attorney Sabrina Shroff argued Rahimi was not guilty on three counts related to the 27th Street bomb. While the government presented Rahimi as an "expert bomb maker," Shroff argued that if he were an expert, that bomb would have gone off.

"This is a difficult case for you. This is a difficult case for all of us. ... However, on counts 2, 5 and 8, Mr. Rahimi is not guilty," Shroff said in her closing argument.

The defense called for a mistrial on the second day of the trial, but the judge denied their request.

Rahimi was thrown out of court on the first day of trial after he interrupted the lead prosecutor multiple times. When he was allowed to return to court, he apologized and told US District Judge Richard Berman that he had not been given frequent enough visits with his children and hadn't seen his wife in a year. Berman said he would look into Rahimi's complaints.

The bombings

The bomb that went off in Chelsea shattered windows, vaulted a steel dumpster more than 100 feet in the air and sent people running from packed restaurants and bars on a Saturday night.

Authorities believed the attack was the first jihadist terrorist attack on the city since the September 11 attacks, which had just passed their 15th anniversary days before.

The bomb on West 23rd Street was left in a heavy steel dumpster. It shattered windows 400 feet away, according to the criminal complaint.

Two days after the bombs went off, police ended a manhunt for Rahimi with a shootout in Linden, New Jersey. Rahimi and two police officers were wounded in the shootout.

Outside of this federal case, Rahimi faces separate charges in New Jersey, including the attempted murder of law enforcement officers stemming from the shootout that led to his capture.

Rahimi's sentencing is scheduled for January 18. While each of the eight counts have various sentencing recommendations, he faces a mandatory sentence of life in prison for his conviction on the charges of using a destructive device in furtherance of a crime of violence, namely, the use and attempted use of weapons of mass destruction.

CNN's Sara Ganim and Ray Sanchez contributed to this report.

Good.  Rot mutha####er.   Hope they give you plenty of time with the general population.  We don't take so kindly to terrorists looking to kill kids, even those behind bars.

I was thinking the same thing.  No way they put him with the genpop.  He would be dead within less than a week as multiple people would be looking to get the credit for doing this guy in.
