I'm on my commute with the kids to school. But our local news channel had a reporter say something about a guy with a suicide vest that went off prematurely.

We're not taking the subway today.

I am usually in PA a little after this but today I’m in cleveland

this is some scary stuff that hits really close to home.

Love the idea of a suicide vest going off prematurely and killing only the jackhole wearing it.

If the suicide vest is true, the next question is whether there are more
Yeah I know, I know. Impossible game to play though. So many days I am stuck in massive crowds on the subway or in penn station and there’s just nothing you could do. Can’t even really think about it.

Post reporting several injuries and a pipe bomb. Not sure if old news. On a train going to Penn right now. Touch nervous. Hope all FBG are safe and well.

Stay safe fellow NYC commuters. Hopefully this is just an isolated incident, and hope the injuries are minor.

We made the decision to take the bus and not the subway, so yes- we can and did think about it.

But yeah, dumb luck is dumb luck.

I'm just hoping none of the bus riders shout this news out on the bus- I don't want the kids freaked out right now.

####.

Thoughts are with my NY brethren, and let's hope no innocent lives are lost and that this is an isolated incident.

just walked through it...walking thru Port Authority like I do every morning...get down toward the street and looked like 911 all over....8th ave shutdown, at least 100 cops with m-16's, hundreds of fire trucks, cop cars.....happy Monday!!

Twitter seems to think... pipe bomb, premature explosion, person in custody, others injured.
Hopefully minimal injuries and these people can go home today.

I'm no expert, but I understood suicide vests to be far more complex to make than pipe bombs. That would imply to me sophistication and a possible network... And/or more of them. Pipe bomb implies jagoff with a grudge and more likely to be solo.

I’m reading the only real injury is the guy who set it off... nothing would make me happier - hopefully he lost his limbs and gets to spend the rest of his life in jail.

Uber surging off the charts, subways all basically suspended, taxis impossible to get - im either wfh or driving... scratch that - channel 7 reporting 14/23/34 st all closed.

Def staying in today.

Of course I hope everyone is OK

But on a selfish note, Im supposed to be going to the Rangers game today with my son. Wonder if there will be any additional security if they decide to have the game at all. Sounds like the damage was minimal so far though

no 8 42 into the City for me today, staying right here in Queens  :(  much like the foiled truck bomb of a few years back, i am extremely thankiful that we escaped a catastrophic event this morning.  wow.

Update regarding explosion at 42nd St and 8th Ave, in subway: One male suspect is in custody. No injuries other than suspect at this time. Avoid the area. Subways bypassing #PortAuthority and Times Square Stations. Info is preliminary.

This is nonsense.
I think when people keep seeing mass events happen, it's a natural, if misguided response.

eta* Chalk it up to an emotional reaction to something awful. There's no need to be hyper-logical about suicide bombers.

Yes I know. That’s why these #### heads do these things. To terrorize the population. It’s totally understandable.

But we can’t fall into the trap of extrapolating the events we see on tv as happening everywhere, all the time.

If you live in some suburb of Omaha or Portland or a small town in Ohio you are really, truly, incredibly safe. Even in the big cities.

I agree with you. Just sort of sticking up for sentiment. It's an emotional response to something really terrible. Vegas got me thinking about going to shows, honestly. We're fairly safe, but terrorism is happening, both domestic and foreign.

it goes towards how you react, IMO.

do you see this stuff and then think- no way I'm going anywhere with people, subways, cities, anywhere where this kind of thing just happened. IMO, that response is to live in fear... terror... which is what their intent is. so then we're doing their work for them.

or you can try to be more aware of your surroundings and situations in those places- where are the exits, do I run, fight or lay still in this or that type of situation, etc. live your life and just be more thoughtful and informed about your choices, micro and macro. you're still hugely more likely to be killed by a stray bullet or in a car accident than in one of these. 2c

Of definitely heightened security tonight.

The Post has video up.

Confirming ISIS inspired suicide bomber, possibly from Bangladesh.
If this guy had been better at making a bomb, it could have been much, much worse.

The Latest: NYPD commissioner: Pipe bomb was terror-related

A 27-year-old man had a crude pipe bomb strapped to him and it went off in a passageway from Seventh and Eighth Avenues near Times Square.

and here i thought it was for funsies

from the NY Dailynews

A pipe bomb exploded in a underground subway passage between Times Square and the Port Authority Bus Terminal — one of the busiest transit hubs in the world — on Monday in what officials are calling a terrorist attack.

Akayed Ullah, a 27-year-old Bangladeshi native, detonated part of his “low tech” explosive at 7:30 a.m. and was injured in an underground subway passage just 200 feet from the bus terminal at West 42nd St. and Eighth Ave., officials said. Three commuters suffered minor injuries, officials said.

After the explosion, Port Authority cops moved in and struggled with Ullah, who had wires attached to his body, sources said.

He tried to set off the rest of his bomb, but only part of it went off. Two PAPD officers grabbed him and successfully removed the explosives without further incident.

He was taken to Bellevue Hospital with burns to the hands and the abdomen and also lacerations and is expected to survive, sources said.
