Explosions at Boston Marathon (2 Viewers)

There could be public lockers nearby - in a bus or train station? Someone putting a backpack in a public locker would not normally draw suspicion.
Seems like a stretch. Too complicated to drop a pack, run to some public lockers (not sure there are any in any T station anyway), then grab that pack and drop it. Gotta be two people or one dude with two packs
By my rough calculations, a six quart pressure cooker filled with steel objects would weigh about 40 pounds. HTH
Uh, how did you calculate that, or is this shtick?
6 quart pressure cooker on Amazon has a shipping weight of 6.6 pounds. 6 quarts is the internal volume of the pot. Found the specific gravity of steel and did some calculations (which could be entirely). I don't know how much volume the charge and timing mechanism would take up. Carrying two 40 pound backpacks isn't impossible but doing it inconspicuously is harder than two typical backpacks.
I would imagine the black powder (the explosive that has been mentioned) would have taken up quite a bit of the volume but that is just speculation.

That photo is in this group of photos which also have 3 or 4 other potential guys. So about 4-5 potential suspects in total

Scary because 4 of those look pretty suspicious. Hopefully we don't go down a false road like ATL first.
I was thinking pretty silly. For instance one guy they say goes from having a bag to no bag also goes from having no sunglasses at all to clearly having sunglasses resting on his hat. I'd say some people have too much time and not enough attention to detail.
The unibomber looking dude, the two in matching khakis, and the two guys (one with backpack and one with duffel) at first glance and based on the little they put together at least make me raise my eyebrows though.
I can take a still of any crowd at any event and we could pull out "suspicious" looking people by the dozen. I really think the guy who runs the fry machine at McD's when he isn't playing CSI on the web may not be fully qualified to make the proper distinctions here.
Probably not, but places like reddit have a lot more people than just the fry guy at McDonald's
And we have no clue who they are or what they are really qualified to do.
Which is why we're not relying on them to run the show. However, them taking millions of photos and finding clues to forward to the FBI may be quite helpful.
Or it might just be a blizzard of crap. Look the FBI has these photos and they likely have stuff unavailable to the public like recorded video from various cameras. They also have real trained investigators poring over them. I find it highly unlikely 4chan is going to turn up something from the publicly available stuff that the FBI won't from that plus the private stuff.

Great quote from The Umbrella Man:

If you have any fact which you think is really sinister - is really obviously a fact that can only point to some sinister under-pinnings - hey, forget it, man, because you can never on your own think up all the non-sinister perfectly valid explanations for that fact.

And that's a problem because? You could say the same thing about people in the FBI. We like to glorify people that work at places like the CIA, NSA, FBI, etc. but they're just people like you or me and, much like our own work places, I'm sure there are at least a few people who are out of their element that are attached to the case already. Crowd-sourcing work like this is the future enabled by the Internet, whether we like it or not.

CNN says breakthrough is from video from Lord and Taylors along with video from other sources. Believe to have identified a suspect.
Also saying "dark skinned man" but refuses to elaborate. Says other adjectives were used to describe him but didn't want to say them. Assuming that means Muslim?

Why announce a breakthrough if they don't have the person in custody? Seems like you wouldn't want to alert the person that you know who they are but maybe I'm missing something.

Awesome news. Hope this isn't some reporter getting ahead of the story. Personallly would like to see this guy captured alive.

Investigators believe they have identified a suspect in the Boston Marathon bombings, a source who has been briefed on the investigation told CNN's John King.

The source said what officials believe is a breakthrough came from analysis of video from a department store near the site of the second explosion. Video from a Boston television station also contributed to the progress, this source said.

From that analysis, the source said, authorities believe that they have identified a suspect.

The source declined to be more specific but called it a significant development.

unless the guy was carrying a Koran or praying to Mecca how would we know his religion? :)

Boston Globe Twitter:

BREAKING NEWS: Source: Officials are “very close” in the investigation of the Boston Marathon bombings.

I'm going to :lmao: if it turns out to not be any of the guys singled out on reddit.
It very well could be. I doubt the guy was there for long. They said he was "dark skinned" and many of the guys they circled appeared to be light skinned. They also didn't seem to be worrying about time stamps which I'm sure was big with the investigation.

No offense to Reddit, but I'll take the field. The bearded, unabomber looking guy definitely appears to be the most suspect of the bunch, especially since the bag he was holding appeared to match. But I probably looked the same a couple years ago standing in nearly the exact spot, hungover holding my wife's backpack for her as I watched for her to finish.

Other boards I go to are officially filled with nutjobs claiming that the government did this. I don't even know how to deal with people like that right now. These "false flag" ######## should be slapped repeatedly until they shut up.
I am not a fan of our government but thinking that our own government would blow up innocent people is truly insane.
:lmao:
So you think our government would kill its own citizens, including innocent women and children, for their own political gain? Honestly.

From the Globe:

An official briefed on the Boston Marathon bombing investigation said today that authorities have an image of a suspect carrying, and perhaps dropping, a black bag at the second bombing scene on Boylston Street, outside of the Forum restaurant.

Investigators are “very close” in the investigation, said the official, who declined to be named.

That official said authorities may publicize their finding as early as this afternoon.

The same official also said a surveillance camera at Lord & Taylor, located directly across the street, has provided clear video of the area, though it was unclear whether the image of the suspect was taken from that camera.
It kind of bothers me that this info is coming from "an official briefed on the investigation" and not the investigators themselves. It's one thing if the investigators want this news out there, it's another if some politician is blabbing info that shouldn't yet be disclosed.

I have a feeling they sort of expect that to happen. I'm sure these people who speak to reporters don't know in the early stages or the people talking know what to tell.

Or maybe the investigators are out doing something important...like investigating.

It could be disinformation, as in they have identified another suspect and want to watch him; naming another suspect could make the prime suspect relax/stay put - just saying .

Wasn't everyone singled out on reddit?
This is true, but how can you fault so many people putting in so much time trying to help?
It's understandable that people want to "do something" other than sit around feeling useless. But flooding the internet with false suspicions and/or accusations is extremely unhelpful, regardless of the intent.

Also in that photo the guy in blue he is talking to clearly still has his bag hanging from his right shoulder.

How exactly is it "extremely unhelpful"? It's not like they posted names and addresses. The images were publicly available, they looked at them very closely trying to find anything out of place. It's basically what Otis and others do in the Kate Upton thread.
