Explosions at Boston Marathon (2 Viewers)

FYI....

I finished about 10-15 mins before the explosions. Got my medal, just got my bag off the buses and heard two loud booms, everyone I was with commented 'sounds like cannons' and we all remarked that was very odd. Didn't think *too* much more about it. Walked over to the subway, next thing you know they were evacuating the subway, no explanation, went back up to the street and started to hear about it all...
Glad you're alright.

It will be interesting to see who is responsible for this. While the race is a great public relations target, the person planning this had to realize that they wouldn't do much damage with bombs in garbage cans on the sidewalk. Traditionally it seems if this was international terrorism related they tend to go big - looking for a lot of casualties (i.e. subways, planes, buses etc...). Not to say it still couldn't be the case but its a different tactic for sure...

somewhat odd that if it is this Saudi suspect - that he didn't go with the bomb. In the past that's how they have worked - so I'm wondering if we are premature on this Saudi angle.
Times Square guy just parked the rig and walked off, didn't he?

Cell Coverage shut down in Boston to prevent remote detonation (per Buzzfeed)
That's scary.
Two of the largest cell towers likely would be located atop the John Hancock Tower and Prudential Center, which are right near the scene.
I understand the need to prevent the possibility of remote detonation, but at the same time, they are preventing a lot of people from calling in any additional suspicious activity.

Was watching an ABC News thing on ESPN, and they were talking to a guy in Boston. They asked him if he was on a cell phone, since they had heard that bit about the shut-down cell service, and he was so they didn't give it much validity.

Get down there and give us some on-scene stuff!!!!!
I'm in the Herald newsroom ... All of my co-workers are accounted for, but I'm sure there were one or two right by the scene when it happened. Will be a busy night in here, for sure.

Glad to here Wilked is safe ... T&P for any and all affected by this.

Serious and possibly stupid question... bombs just went off at the Boston Marathon, if it wasn't a terrorist attack, was it a friendly attack?? Wtf we have to be PC about using the ####### word terrorist when people set off bombs at an American national event???
Who said that?
It's more like who didn't say what.
Confusing.
Stupid reporter to BPD: "Would you classify this as a terrorist attack"BPD: "It's an ongoing investigation and I don't want to say that right now, but considering what has happened you can draw your own conclusions"Well first stupid question, then to answer that way, what the #### else is it?? Just ranting about something stupid, I'm mad.
Because terrorism has taken on a more narrow definition that everyone assumes to be an attack from the Middle East. Of course, every tragedy like this technically qualifies as terrorism be it foreign or domestic but as a society, we seem to indicate terrorism, at least without the domestic moniker, as originating from abroad.
More like all first responders have been told to keep their traps shut until a full top level response has been formulated.

But in the meantime everyone on the top level is discussing the t-word and the cop knows it.
While not quite the same, one of the military bases I've worked at would routinely conduct terrorism drills, and included in that were "news crews" who would try to get information out of the people in the exercise. This was to train them to not say anything and let the Public Affairs divisions handle all press inquiries. More than likely these people have undergone similar training.
Agreed. And after all that happened after Libya, I doubt they will rush to say anything about it. But this is rather tangential and a discussion for another day. Just saying that them avoiding saying "terrorism" isn't really that ridiculous especially after that word played a huge role in one of the presidential debates.
It is two different issues.

This is part of the first responder and governmental communications training.

But the press has a duty to report the facts. And so does the president.

NBC just got confirmation from AT&T that they didn't shut it down but just heavily congested. Say to text or use the web. Say the Army has alternative technology to stop frequencies.

New York post

@nypost: Breaking: Authorities ID a Saudi national as a suspect in Boston Marathon bombings http://t.co/4hfqLc3n0A
>BPD says they have no suspects in custody.
I'm a West Coaster here...does the Post actually cover the news?
At this point, they are closer to a Tabloid like National Enquirer. They shoot from the hip and every once and a while, they hit and look like geniuses.

Very good to know.

Haven't heard anything about Terrorist organizations claiming responsibility. There was a time that anytime something bad happend, a dozen or so groups would say "We did it! Now here are our demands!"

agreed ...... congrats on being fast!!!

I would put about 80 percent confidence level in the report. Probably some truth to the New York Post report, but there is usually some misinformation in today's fast pace news.

If it was me I'd be on like Mile #2 when the explosion hit (assuming I didn't run out of smokes earlier).

Arrest UpdateFBI is no-commenting reports that there is a person or suspect in custody in Boston. This comes after the Boston Police knocked down press reports to that effect.

Obviously there’s a lot of confusion and conflicting accounts at the moment. So we’re going to tell you exactly what we’ve been told by relevant authorities: The Boston Police Department said and still says they know nothing about an arrest. The FBI, however, is declining to comment on the report. Obviously these are not necessarily conflicting reports. It is also possible that federal law enforcement knows things that local law enforcementdoes not.

We’ll let you know more when we hear it.

TLDR everything. What is "known" at this point?

Deaths? Sorry just got home.
Two blasts seconds apart. At least 2 dead. Injury count now 50+... multiple amputationsIncident at nearby library has bounced between fire / bomb. no injuries. Suspect potentially in custody at hospital.. 20yo saudi man. UnconfirmedMultiple other suspect packages found. 1 or more allegedly controlled detonations. Multiple other alleged suspects being taken into custody... no confirmations on involvement

Well that clears up everything.

What a nightmare from a law enforcement standpoint, city is probably the most crowded all year and thousands of folks with backpacks. Add to that the amount of drunk spectators, really have to hand it to the authorities for how they have managed things so far.
