Explosions at Boston Marathon (2 Viewers)

Cell Coverage shut down in Boston to prevent remote detonation (per Buzzfeed)
Pretty good idea here
I can see why but man that is going to make for a lot more anxiety and worry for people that can't get in touch with their loved ones.
Safety/security>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>everything else

FYI, five of our 10K thread guys ran today. We have finishing times for all of them (and three have checked in). One of the guys finished close to the time of the bombs ...waiting to hear how he is doing (the runners all get directed through a flow of activity beyond the finish line). It appears those affected were spectators and possibly volunteers. Absolutely senseless. Thoughts and prayers to all those affected.

Serious and possibly stupid question... bombs just went off at the Boston Marathon, if it wasn't a terrorist attack, was it a friendly attack?? Wtf we have to be PC about using the ####### word terrorist when people set off bombs at an American national event???
Who said that?
It's more like who didn't say what.
Confusing.
Stupid reporter to BPD: "Would you classify this as a terrorist attack"BPD: "It's an ongoing investigation and I don't want to say that right now, but considering what has happened you can draw your own conclusions"Well first stupid question, then to answer that way, what the #### else is it?? Just ranting about something stupid, I'm mad.
Because terrorism has taken on a more narrow definition that everyone assumes to be an attack from the Middle East. Of course, every tragedy like this technically qualifies as terrorism be it foreign or domestic but as a society, we seem to indicate terrorism, at least without the domestic moniker, as originating from abroad.

Like I said, I can see why they did it.

police commissioner saying incident at JFK library may be related
I have no idea how worthwhile the Dorchester Reporter is, but it's reporting that an official at the JFK Library has confirmed that the fire which broke out was not an explosion and was not related to the bombings at the Marathon. Link

In terms of who might have done this: MSNBC brought up a good point- that the Boston Marathon is an international event, followed, like the Olympics, all around the world. Which heightens the possibility that this is an act of international terrorism. Think Munich.

The Post is way out ahead/on a limb on this story. Saying 12 dead, when the count so far is 2, only place reporting any suspect in custody, let alone speculate on his nationality.
Is the NY Post ever considered a serious news source? I'm not all that familiar with anything they've ever got right but maybe it happens. Does it?
I read on a thread reddit there was a "person of interest" in the hospital, from word of mouth of a relative of a poster that works at the hospital.

About 30 minutes after the explosion my cellphone was acting up...I stopped by the Verizon store to see what was going on...there was one person there with the same issue and about five more came in within the next few minutes and it was pretty obvious that it had to do with the bombing...we all were just watching the TV at the scenes going on about 20 miles from us on streets everyone was quite familiar with...very surreal few minutes with some complete strangers...

Fox saying the same thing. They also said that they don't know if the person is a victim or a suspect or both.

Its a fair mention at this point - but lets not run wild with it.

Don't think it means much. Atlanta was a domestic act.

Please. MSNBC reaching around looking for some other plausible explanation is as bad as the NY Post jumping up and down escalating body counts and pointing at a possible report of a possile ablleged maybe Saudi in some hospital.

Oh man, people leaving stuff behind as they ran are suspicious packages. Goes to the "false positive" theory someone mentioned earlier. That is a lot of work, a lot of work.

More like all first responders have been told to keep their traps shut until a full top level response has been formulated.

But in the meantime everyone on the top level is discussing the t-word and the cop knows it.

Quote

"Suspicious package found near Boylston and Dartmouth"

"Package found near corner of St.James and Berkeley"
How far were the two other devices located from the ones that went off? Anyone know? Any Boston guys in here?
Don't know if this has been answered already ... just got into my office in the Seaport District, a couple of miles from the area.

Boylston and Dartmouth is just past the finish line.

St. James and Berkeley is about three blocks away from that.

Unfortunately it takes an incident like this to remind us all that the world in which we live changed forever several years ago.
The U.S. changed about twenty years ago after the OKC attacks and 1st WTC attacks. The world has faced terrorism for decades, Europe was overrun by it in the 60s, 70s, and 80s.

FYI....

I finished about 10-15 mins before the explosions. Got my medal, just got my bag off the buses and heard two loud booms, everyone I was with commented 'sounds like cannons' and we all remarked that was very odd. Didn't think *too* much more about it. Walked over to the subway, next thing you know they were evacuating the subway, no explanation, went back up to the street and started to hear about it all...

While not quite the same, one of the military bases I've worked at would routinely conduct terrorism drills, and included in that were "news crews" who would try to get information out of the people in the exercise. This was to train them to not say anything and let the Public Affairs divisions handle all press inquiries. More than likely these people have undergone similar training.

somewhat odd that if it is this Saudi suspect - that he didn't go with the bomb. In the past that's how they have worked - so I'm wondering if we are premature on this Saudi angle.

Maybe his parents sent him to an alternative school, like Saudi Montessori or something.

Now if they could get most of the media to take the same class that would be great. However most want to be the first to report and unfortunately a lot of false info gets put out and people run with it.

Agreed. And after all that happened after Libya, I doubt they will rush to say anything about it. But this is rather tangential and a discussion for another day. Just saying that them avoiding saying "terrorism" isn't really that ridiculous especially after that word played a huge role in one of the presidential debates.
