FYI, five of our 10K thread guys ran today. We have finishing times for all of them (and three have checked in). One of the guys finished close to the time of the bombs ...waiting to hear how he is doing (the runners all get directed through a flow of activity beyond the finish line). It appears those affected were spectators and possibly volunteers. Absolutely senseless. Thoughts and prayers to all those affected.

Because terrorism has taken on a more narrow definition that everyone assumes to be an attack from the Middle East. I have no idea how worthwhile the Dorchester Reporter is, but it's reporting that an official at the JFK Library has confirmed that the fire which broke out was not an explosion and was not related to the bombings at the Marathon. Link

In terms of who might have done this: MSNBC brought up a good point- that the Boston Marathon is an international event, followed, like the Olympics, all around the world. Which heightens the possibility that this is an act of international terrorism. Think Munich.

I read on a thread reddit there was a "person of interest" in the hospital, from word of mouth of a relative of a poster that works at the hospital.

About 30 minutes after the explosion my cellphone was acting up...I stopped by the Verizon store to see what was going on...there was one person there with the same issue and about five more came in within the next few minutes and it was pretty obvious that it had to do with the bombing...we all were just watching the TV at the scenes going on about 20 miles from us on streets everyone was quite familiar with...very surreal few minutes with some complete strangers...

He appears to be walking off the roof as the second bomb is going off below him. Who would do that who had no idea the bombs would go off? Nothing conclusive but interesting

Please. MSNBC reaching around looking for some other plausible explanation is as bad as the NY Post jumping up and down escalating body counts and pointing at a possible report of a possile ablleged maybe Saudi in some hospital.

Yes. 4 people that I know were part of the medical staff at the finish line. They posted on FB that they were ok and for anyone to contact the rest of their family to let them know. They said don't call or text them because they will not respond. They are too busy helping the victims.

The U.S. changed about twenty years ago after the OKC attacks and 1st WTC attacks. The world has faced terrorism for decades, Europe was overrun by it in the 60s, 70s, and 80s.

I finished about 10-15 mins before the explosions. Got my medal, just got my bag off the buses and heard two loud booms, everyone I was with commented 'sounds like cannons' and we all remarked that was very odd. Didn't think *too* much more about it. Walked over to the subway, next thing you know they were evacuating the subway, no explanation, went back up to the street and started to hear about it all...

While not quite the same, one of the military bases I've worked at would routinely conduct terrorism drills, and included in that were "news crews" who would try to get information out of the people in the exercise. This was to train them to not say anything and let the Public Affairs divisions handle all press inquiries. Agreed. And after all that happened after Libya, I doubt they will rush to say anything about it. But this is rather tangential and a discussion for another day.
