Explosions at Boston Marathon (1 Viewer)

Apparently Bill O'Reilly went on TV last night and lambasted Obama for calling this a "tragedy" rather than "terrorism".

JFC. Can't they just stop for one day?
No, he didn't. He didn't lambast anyone. His only disagreement was that he said it wasn't a "tragedy", and also said that he didn't have any issues with Obama not using the word "terrorism". He said it was not a tragedy, but cowardly act. Sometimes, the left wingers should listen better.

If it turns out the Saudi national was involved the poop is really going to hit the fan. I still don't really understand why we gave Saudi Arabia favored status regarding immigration when we have only extended that to about 4 other countries. Especially when so many of the 9/11 participants were Sauds.

I'm not going to rip Obama for not using the word terrorism, but at the same time I'm not sure why some people seem to be implying that it wasn't or might not be. Two explosive devices were planted and triggered to go off right at the finish line of the Boston Marathon. Seems to be the textbook definition of terrorism.

Apparently Bill O'Reilly went on TV last night and lambasted Obama for calling this a "tragedy" rather than "terrorism".
Not true. He did not care about Obama not calling it terrorism; he said that several times.

And lambasted is a stupid way to put it. He only said, calmly, that it was not a tragedy, and that accidents like a storm wiping your family is a tragedy, and that yesterday was a vile act.

Let me guess: you didn't actual watch; you just read it on a left-leaning website or show, right?
I watched. What I can't remember is Bill O slamming Bush for doing the same thing after 911. I'm sure I just missed it though.
Maybe because Bush actually used the "T word" in the very first sentence and then 4 more times?

>Today, our fellow citizens, our way of life, our very freedom came under attack in a series of deliberate and deadly terrorist

acts.
Actually during the first presser he called it a national tragedy in the first two sentences. He called it apparent terrorism after that.
Wrong again.

<blockquote>

>Today, we've had a national tragedy. Two airplanes have crashed into the World Trade Center in an apparent terrorist attack on our co

untry.
That isn't the first sentence but who is counting. Perhaps you can try reading what you posted and tell me how I was wrong again?
You said you couldn't remember O'Reilly slamming Bush for not saying terrorism (or any variation) like he supposedly did last night about Obama. I pointed out that he did mention the "T word" several times in his speech that night. You came back and brought up the speech at the school, even though he said "t word" twice there. So I have no idea what you're trying to get at other than trying to score some cheap political points and failing badly. Now, please go elsewhere.

He didn't get on Obama about not saying terrorism. He got on him for calling it a tragedy. Do try to keep up.

Why would you guys discern a domestic vs. foreign terrorist in motive, re: pressure cookers? Are you talking the about the arcing military response to this?
I'm not sure I understand this question.
I think the answer he's looking for is that it will point the investigation in the proper direction. But you can google "pressure cooker bomb" and come up with some recipes. But if this bomb is similar to a bomb that went off in Hyderbad in 2009, that could be helpful.
There's no question that Al Qaeda has provided instructions for building pressure cooker bombs in the past, and middle east violence has included pressure cooker bombs for some time.

It's certainly not a definitive source of the bombings by any stretch of the imagination.
I guess my point is, what difference does it make as to why?

What difference would it make if it was coordinated domestic terrorism or coordinated international terrorism? Or lone wolf style of either foreign or domestic?

What is the story here? The random violence of this situation? Or the fact that we could some how further attack Al Queda? Whats left to attack?

I guess my thinking is, we need to somehow start managing our collective reaction to this stuff, no matter how horrible, tragic and senseless it might be. A random nut that stabs someone in Times Square or a drunk driver that takes out a family of four doesn't exactly change the way we live our lives. Because the guy who left this might be brown or white, I don't think it should either.

And frankly, I think if its a "lone white nut" this story will be over by the end of the week. But if its a foreign national, we start deploying and I frankly don't quite know why other than to "not look like a puswah"
That's kind of the point, I think. If this is a "lone white nut" story, the FBI will have the guy in handcuffs or a body bag in a relatively short period of time and people will feel slightly safer, whether that's reasonable or not. If it's not, then we've had a serious intelligence failure again, and we're going to see things shape up differently in that department. Plus, there's the question of "what can we possibly to do AQ that we aren't already" which is a pretty scary question.

People want to feel like this is an isolated incident. Whether that's true or not, finding out it's domestic and tied to a single person or very small group of people would help with that feeling.
I dont' think that necessarily has to be true. I don't know what reasonable expectation people could have of warring with a culture who's stock and trade was suicide bombing. This, if it was AQ, is the first domestic terrorist attack executed on U.S. soil in 12 years. I think we need to acknowledge and accept our evolution into a culture with a camera on every corner, but I really see no way to avoid this.

So short of moving to the country or becoming agorophobic, this is a sad possibility of life.

But if this guy acted alone, in the name of AQ, I don't see how you could stop someone like this.

To your point though, if it was coordinated and ordered from above, then we can open this discussion up.

CNN confirming that it was the pressure cooker with a timing device. More evidence that it was more amateurish than anything else. Saying pressure cooker actually reduces power to an extent.

There's that, but there's also an Al Qaeda bomb-making pamphlet titled "How To Make A Bomb In The Kitchen Of Your Mom" which details pressure-cooker bombs. So there's still the conceivable connection to Mid-East terrorism.

A big if.

Saudi has favored nation status because we've had a close relationship with them for decades and 99.9% of their citizens are harmless visitors. Don't throw the baby away with the bathwater, there are some bad Danes out there too.

Tricky thing is it was used as a loophole to expose security in the 9/11/01 attacks.

I think if they were to use the word terrorist, even though it is a terrorist act, it's in the majority of the populations psyche that terrorist equals Muslim. You start eluding to that, even though your intention is not to point a finger yet, it hits that 'all Muslims are terrorists' racist button. As s country, we don't need that to happen again.

I say anyone else who mentions Obama, Bush, O'Reilly, Matthews, et al in this thread gets a DayBan. Mods, can I get a hallelujah?

Not saying it rules out an internationally inspired type but that it doesn't seem like a grandiose scheme from AQ or anyone else or that this signifies a failure of intelligence because by all accounts there was no chatter at all about this.

Precisely. If this is a grandiose scheme, we have a serious intelligence failure.

Matthias: Look, I don't think it should be a sin, just for saying "Jehovah".

[Everyone gasps]

Jewish Official: You're only making it worse for yourself!

Matthias: Making it worse? How can it be worse? Jehovah! Jehovah! Jehovah!

Jewish Official: I'm warning you! If you say "Jehovah" one more time (gets hit with rock) RIGHT! Who did that? Come on, who did it?

Stoners: She did! She did! (suddenly speaking as men) He! He did! He!

Jewish Official: Was it you?

Stoner: Yes.

Jewish Official: Right...

Stoner: Well you did say "Jehovah. "

[Crowd throws rocks at the stoner]

Jewish Official: STOP IT! STOP IT! STOP IT RIGHT NOW! STOP IT! All right, no one is to stone _anyone_ until I blow this whistle. Even... and I want to make this absolutely clear... even if they do say, "Jehovah. "

[Crowd stones the Jewish Official to death]

They got this Saudi guy's picture and address plastered all over the Daily News saying they questioned him for hours about his Saudi roommate who is missing.

We haven't extended this benefit to Great Britain, Germany, France, Australia, etc. Saudi Arabia may be counted as an ally, but I think there are enough ties to terrorists that giving them less scrutiny than other allies with much fewer connections to terrorists makes no sense.

Did they confirm this was the guy driving back and forth as well? Or was that wrong and they found his apartment through questioning him at the hospital?

Maybe not. If these were U.S. citizens with no criminal past who took it upon themselves to bomb the marathon, that is about as much an intelligence failure as Sandy Hook. Chatter comes from foreign networks, from understanding potential enemies and monitoring them. We'll see how this turns out but it is impossible for the U.S. to identify all domestic threats and when we try, people freak out about NSA accidentally monitoring their cell phone call. If you want intelligence gathering that is close to 100%, you'd have to give up a lot of your freedoms.

If this incident results in Americans wasting countless hours arguing with each other over the definitions of words, the terrorists have won.

The terrorists aren't stupid. I could easily see some organization getting 1-2 people over here to do nothing but make a couple of amateur bombs and drop them in a heavily populated area. They would have their marching orders and there would be no "discussion" of the plan online, over the phone...

I think we as a country have done a good job preventing any grand style type attacks since 9/11. I know even a few have been thwarted. It has always shocked me we don't see more incidents like they have in the middle east. Incidents like yesterday’s in Boston, or where a guy walks onto some random city bus strapped with dynamite and takes out a couple of dozen people. It would be so hard to predict where and when attacks like that would occur; they would not require much coordination or preparation and would really instill fear into people as they go about their daily lives.

That's my point, as I said above. If this is a small group of U.S. Citizens, people will feel safer - whether that's actually true or not. If it's not that, people will be calling for intelligence overhauls again.
