Explosions at Boston Marathon (2 Viewers)

Just curious: has anyone on here ever cooked something in a pressure cooker? What do you need vast amounts of air pressure to cook?
It's 15 psi. It's really not that incredible an amount of pressure.
Small note, it is definitely not 15 psi

15 psig is operating pressure. If the cooker blew apart at 15 psi, no one could use it without getting a new kitchen (and lawyer) on each use.

There is a relief device built in to relieve pressure at 15 psi. That gets removed by the terrorists. Still, the vessel likely can handle 30-45 psi before it is compromised (explodes). A safety factor of 3 (meaning 45 psi) is very typical on these vessels
He asked why you need vast amounts of pressure to cook. The max pressure on a pressure cooker is generally 15 psi, which I'm saying isn't a vast amount of pressure.

And, again, you can put more than 30-45 psi in a tire before it blows. Not so for a pressure cooker. There just isn't much you can do to reduce their danger without making them useless.
Making something useless has never stopped the government from passing a bill.

OK, now the report from State Troopers that the Honda CRV were incorrect and the troopers were always looking for a green Honda civic which they found later.. So much going on..
No offense, snogger, but you are waaaaay behind on info. There is another thread to get everyone caught up.
First I'm hearing and/or seeing it here.. Again, blame the Boston CBS live feed if I'm behind on typing what I am hearing.. Just trying to keep people not able to listen live up to date.
Its all good. A lot of us are listening to BPD police scanner: http://www.ustream.tv/channel/ma-rt-9-window-cam
Probably why the delay as CBS Boston waits to get confirmation on it before reporting it.. They stayed away from reporting on the multiple hostage taking, and the "suspect captured and being searched by robots" today..

Watch Iron Chef...they use it all the time.

Mainly for bigger things that normally you would braise or cook slow...but to be able to do it quickly on the time limit they have.

But is the fact that it can hold a modest pressure valuable to the bomb maker? I thought it was just a little more convenient to put the bomb in there because the top would be held on (as opposed to a lobstah pot).
The fact that it has an airtight seal which won't become dislodged without real force is valuable. The more pressure builds up before the container fails, the more concussive force is released.

I saw somewhere they were due back in Russia in a few days. Maybe they thought they'd be able to hide out and leave as scheduled? But then why wouldn't you schedule your flight out the next day at the latest?
If they really wanted to get away, they could have quietly walked to their car, driven away doing the speed limit, and be switching cars 35 miles outside of the city as the bomb went off.
Not with the RC equipment that they were using. 200yds would have probably been the maximum distance from the bomb and still be able to detonate.
Ah, that's interesting. I don't know that.

I assumed cell phone or a simple timer.
I'm not sure if these two had the knowledge and ability to create a bomb with a cell phone or timer. May be why they went with RC parts. I built a remote control tank a few years ago that fired bottle rockets. It takes very little knowledge and skills to get build a system to light a fuse.

White Hat and Black Hat drove and abandoned the Honda CRV when they carjacked the Mercedes in Cambridge last night. The Honda Civic is the car owned by the older brother that s found somewhere else in Cambridge and being examined by police.

Link? I missed that. I've seen the innocent victims, now I want mental justice by seeing him dead.
It was on reddit earlier. I don't think it is still there.
It's there. Here. NSFW GORE

Is this confirmed? Reports this morning were that the body had "too many bullet holes to count".

Pressure can be a very powerful force. It's also very simple to make. However, when used wisely, such as when a pressure cooker is used to make food delicious, it's generally safe.

Lobster pot, no pressure can be built (no seal). It is convenient since it is readily available, and size is easy to transport. No different than a pipe bomb, but pipe bombs are usually long and thin for a given volume

They can have my cooker when they pry it from my fat, dead hands.

Huh, never knew that. It'll be handy for the zero times I build a bomb in my life.

No it's the fact that the design will take that pressure and force it out of the top like a shaped charge that makes them good for bombs. If these guys had laid the pressure cookers on their sides and then detonated them you'd have a lot more dead and wounded. They sat them down upright so the primary force went vertical instead of horizontal. Thankfully. And these kind of devices have been in use since at least the 1990's when Maoist rebels started using them in Nepal.

They still keep reporting the younger brother drove over the older one.. add in the"throwing of an explosive device" and I can only piece together that the older brother threw the device at the Police, they shot him, he tried to stop his brother from leaving, brother drives over him and crashes a couple blocks away and takes off running. and that's the last we've seen or heard from the younger brother.. Is that what others are getting from the stories

WCVB News Anchor bagging on the mechanic (had interaction with Suspect2 on Tuesday) for not recognizing him from the Wednesday.

And had a dickbag attitude when his co-anchor brought up the images weren't clear.

Maybe it is the fact that it is a dead terrorist.

I could / would not look at the same image of Martin (8 yr old who died)

How dumb were these guys that they didn't at least have a couple grand to run with and had to hold up a 7-11? A few fewer grenades and they could be chilling in a Motel 8 somewhere.
They had to have underestimated the power of social media and all the photos, right? Sounds like they paniced last night.

Why is everyone so sure he is still alive?
They haven't found his body yet, so they're forced to assume that he is still alive and running.
as many shots as there were last night, its seems plausible that he was hit.
He definitely could have bled to death wherever he was hiding. I think him hiding in some location/house, whether dead or alive, is more likely than him escaping the manhunt going on.

the wound he has looks more like a laceration. Where as an explosive would leave more of a hamburger effect. (sorry for the gore, just trying to make it simple)

Ray, it is not terrible IMO. And I am squeamish on these things
:goodposting: I've seen worse on CSI.
Doesn't really look like the guy, IMO.

Also, that opening on the side of the chest obviously has been cut away with an instrument...not sure what it would have looked like before. Know nothing about autopsy work, could they be testing skin for explosive elements if the guy had an IED on him?

Trying to figure out the scene.. when did the younger brother run over the older one? Or is that a misreport?

Just trying to figure out how the older brother ended up in front of the vehicle since the cops were behind it..

Guess he could have been standing in front of it, stood up to throw the device and as as he was getting shot brother ran over him

OK, because he was run over then. Despite watching every episode of Quincy, we are way outside my area of expertise.

Or a relatively high-caliber round. Looks like could have caught him on the side and torn a chunk out.
