Explosions at Boston Marathon (1 Viewer)

... I think the photos (of him, anyway, since his face was uncovered) were clear enough that someone eventually would have pointed him out.
Initially, I was thinking "no way". But that was because I thought the released photo was the FBI's absolutely clearest shot. Turns out they had clearer ones.

I'm interested in why the fuzzier shot was released first. IMHO, if the best the FBI had was the first released photo, the Tsarnaevs would have had a great chance to escape capture (except possibly getting tracked through the pressure cooker purchases?).
Many more clearer photos from the scene were released the next morning. Not sure if they had those why they would not release them, or perhaps if they came in from people who looked through their phones again. Many people thought they recognized each of the brothers but dismissed it, when more photos poured out within hours, like this , this and this some of the people who thought they recognized one or both of these guys would have called in. My point is, gunfight or no gunfight, they would have been identified by Friday morning. At that point it would have been much more difficult for them to get out of the country than it would have had they left on Monday.

It seems they were continuing attacks until they got caught. They killed the cop to attract more attention. Yet they almost got away again.

where do you think they could have gone and not be caught?

These two were not the sharpest tools in the shed.
And this has been the saving grace with most of these knuckleheads. Because most and dumber than a stone to begin with to get talked into doing this stuff, they get caught. With a few simple changes to their plan they would have walked away scott free and thankfully our diligent folks on the innerwebs continue to point out these kinds of mistakes so the next round of knuckleheads will be that much better equipped to succeed.
no they wouldnt.

There is a video of white hat dropping his backpack and walking away...not reacting to the first bomb, etc. Apparently it's the "smoking gun" of this case. Anyone seen this video?
it was on 60 minutes
 I watched 60 minutes and heard them talk about the video and show the picture of d-bag with the bag on the ground next to him, but I did not see any video. I don't think it is out there yet.

Heard a report this morning that FBI is speculating they shot the cop to try to get another gun. He had a locking holster that appeared to have been tampered with, but they were unable to get the gun.

It seems people are still 100% certain that the FBI released photos because they needed help identifying the brothers. I'm not sure that was the case - they may well have already identified them and used the release to either (1) direct the public's attention to their own photos in an effort to get the timeline of events straight and/or (2) use the release to send the brothers in to a panic and flush them out, which is basically what happened.

They had no extra passport. They would have boarded a flight with a US Passport and once their name was picked up on the way to russia or whatever they would need a safe house and cover there.

There was no evidence they had any intention of not getting killed doing this. They were all setup to do another bombing and another until caught.

I think they eventually would have been caught, I mean, we caught Bin Laden and these guys don't appear to be as intelligent and tactical as he was. It seems like the older brother went back to Chechnya for 6 months to get training. I tend to doubt he was vacationing. He reportedly went to a mosque that has known terrorist ties. If they flew out Monday night, and met with some extremists in or around Chechnya, they could have gotten them deeper into hiding. My point is not that they wouldn't have been caught, just that it would have been more difficult to apprehend them had they left the country already.

I thought about that too, but if the FBI knew who they were they didn't need to flush them out. They could have gone to their house, dorm room, friends, etc. They were right where they were supposed to be if the FBI had IDd them.

Yeah, Tamerlan was supposedly home watching his 3yo on Thursday when his wife left for work. The other guy was working out on the gym and going to a dorm party on Wednesday night. They weren't in hiding or hard to find if the FBI knew who they were before releasing the photos.

Looks like they are "sort of" putting it on Reddit:

:

Such is the power of Reddit, which has long been a key Internet influencer but reached peak appeal in a case that gripped the nation — and which law enforcement officials now admit led to the FBI's public release of the images of the suspects, "in part to limit the damage being done to people who were wrongly being targeted as suspects in the news media and on the Internet."

If dimwit #2 wears sunglasses and his hat forward, they wouldn't have had to go on the run. They could have walked.
Oh come on. A hat and sunglasses is not going to protect his identity. It may have taken a little bit longer, but the photos and videos of the two brothers together (hats/sunglasses/whatever) would have triggered someone's memory. They were not going to walk from this, regardless of their disguises.

As the dust settles I believe the police will quickly learn that the 19 year old actually knew very little. He did not go for 6 months like his brother back to Russia. Unfortunately I don't think the police are going to learn very much form this kid and not because he won't cooperate with them, he was simply following his older brother around, sounds like he really idolized him and was terribly influential. I am not excusing the 19 year old, in fact he can rot in prison until he turns 91, he knew right from wrong.

In retrospect I kind of wish the 19 year old had joined his brother and ran at the police. They're not gonna learn much at all from this...I hope I'm wrong but the gut says we lose all the way around here.

I saw someone on CNN who had posted some pics on FB, including one that had Dzhokhar in it. After the FBI released their photos, a friend noticed and called him. He got in touch with the FBI and said he was escalated very quickly. I also don't think the FBI had identified them at that point. If so, they would have been staking them out and should have been able to get to them earlier in their spree.

If the guys had better disguises I am sure it would have taken a lot longer.
What if they could have worn some sort of white man's mask that made them look caucasian, that might have bought some time.
WTF? They are pretty white looking. Wigs, hats, sunglasses and facial hair would have made it a lot tougher to identify.
Go to Nebraska and tell me how white they would look there.

Pretty much sums up every MoP post ever.

They didn't have access to this level of skill & equipment ... but with Hollywood "aging" makeup and professionally-applied gray-hair wigs, the Lord & Taylor cameras would've been foiled. Point-blank camera-phone shots might not even have done much good.

IMHO, it's not crazy talk that Dzhokar is not exactly a lynchpin figure. I'd be mildly surprised if he even knew the actual names of any of Tamerlan's terrorist contacts in Chechnya (unless Tamerlan was dumb enough to blab/brag about his encounters  ).

Based on the kid's twitter posts he was a 9/11 truther and at the same time seemingly happy that 9/11 happened. In other words, an idiot. Also, saw that no family member had ever attended one of his wrestling matches, including senior night when a family member walks team members on to the mat, he walked with a coach. Older bro was a hot-head who turned into a super allah-freak, younger bro an easily influenced moron. Gotta think it's set in by now that he's thrown his life away.

They weren't in Nebraska ..#######!! They were in a major city that is somewhat diverse.

man you are a real gem

He may not have the first hand knowledge that #1 did but he's not completely in the dark either. MOP saying he wishes the kid committed suicide by cop because this interrogation a waste of time. The post was ridiculous if serious.

Even after the FBI released the suspect photos last Thursday evening -- given the fuzzy nature of the photos, could the bombers perhaps have escaped capture altogether if they hadn't gone off half-cocked Friday morning? If they'd have just kept laying low. The photos, alone, could never have been enough alone to come close to fingering the Tsarnaevs (assuming investigators had little to nothing in the way of real leads).
Maybe not the official ones, but it brought out more pics of them from the public, some of which were pretty clear.

I agree that Dzhokar's interrogation is certainly not a waste of time. Hell, just getting inside a disturbed head might help profilers get generalized knowledge that could help head off future events. Never know.

I honestly wonder how long it would have taken them if ever if they had put any thought into this at all. It took years to figure out about the 1996 bombings

This comment from Bob Beckle is a little surprising:

Fox News liberal Bob Beckel had some policy ideas about Muslims on Tuesday's edition of "The Five." Beckel and his co-hosts were talking about the Boston bombing suspects, who are Muslim. The general consensus seemed to be that, by probing into their lives and their possible motives for the attacks, members of the media were avoiding the main issue. "You find the big argument, which is Muslim supremacy, isn't that all you need?" Greg Gutfeld asked. "Why do you have to delve into their psychosis?" "We know that In the Muslim communities around the world, they do not like us," Beckel replied. "They recruit people from poor areas and turn them into terrorists." He didn't say how this thesis was connected to the Tsarnaev brothers, who came legally with their family when they were 9 and 16. "I think we really have to consider...that we're going to have to cut off Muslim students from coming to this country for some period of time so that we can at least absorb what we've got, look at what we've got and decide whether some of the people here should be sent back home or sent to prison," he continued. At the end of the show, Beckel issued a clarification of sorts, explaining that, perhaps, young Muslims currently in the US could stay, but that new restrictions should definitely be considered, along with restrictions on Chinese students--who, he said, are sent to America only so that they can learn computers, go back home and "hack us."

HFS.

You literally can't find people more Caucasian than these two. They were born in the Caucasus to ethnic Caucasians.
Welcome is America, Mr. Ford. Our Indians are not from India and our Caucasians are not from the Caucasus.
