Fantasy Football Index is out (1 Viewer)

I received mine today, Maryville MO. The first FF mag I ever bought and will continue as long as I play FF.

Is that the same mag that had manning picked 5th in a 10 team mock draft? Once I saw that I just laughed it was at the local CVS yesterday

Disagree. Even after all these years, Ian Allan gives FBG's analysis a run for it's money. Yes, that even includes his horrible Tatum Bell debacle. He, unlike the majority of FF prognosticators, at least allows for a few all-or-nothing gambles. People laugh at the Bell bust, but Allan also pimped out Portis more than any other publication in 2002, and that probably won quite a few owners some championships. Allan also avoids spacer-filler b.s. (I'm looking at you, Fanball mag writers) and unearths a lot of interesting stat trends.Anyway, FFI is still the best-written and edited of the bunch. Its like Tolstoy among my FF readings for the crapper -- compared, for instance, to the unbearable pop-culture-snark of Fanball's mag or the amateurish casual fan writings produced by big media (ESPN, Sporting News, CBS Sportsline, et al.)FBG had a nice print edition last year, but Joe needs to devote more attention to the copy editing. A lot of errors got through last year, and while things like that are kind of minor, FBG needs to make its mark in this busy field by pushing its professionalism more.

Damn :bye:

Still the only FF mag worth buying.
My brother used this at our first draft and won the league. Ever since then we call it the Fantasy Football Bible. I will admit its a great magazine but it lost a bit of its luster with the Tatum Bell cover (although I agree I like how they thought outside of the box on that pick).

Gotta know, who's the cover boy this year?
SA last year and Tatum Bell the year before?
I'm trying to avoid the FF Index curse.
Thanks, thought there was a pattern building but couldn't recall. I thought they pitched Bell as a top 5 RB and their coverboy.
They did, I believe they had Bell third or fourth.
Tatum Bell "The Key To Your Draft".That was the best.I had an owner who actually picked him 3rd overall because of that propaganda. Hilarious.

I tend to think that the fact that such a bold, embarrassing prediction is still talked about is actually testament to how influential Allan still is within the industry.Nobody much cares, frankly, when Fanball or Rotowire blow a projection.

Can you guys tell me....Do they show stats from the last few years for each player when ranking them?

I've always found that to be useful...can't remember what mag always has it...

FFI is really the granddaddy and is certainly on the list of the 3or 4 or so mags I end up purchasing. Yes I said 4.

Funky oddball PC note - take a look at the pages for Kansas City and Washington and see if you notice anything different.

I traditionally do FFI, FFProForecast, and Sporting News (not so much for the rankings as they traditionally have had the biggest player list of any of the mags.

FBGuys mag is a top-notch addition to the mix - it has taken a lot of the best things from the others as well as injected it's own smart FBG sensibilities. Of course wider circulation will tend to eat away at my traditional edge so Joe and Co.'s sucess is clearly a mixed blessing.

For 10+ years I've bought the FF Index magazine and probably will continue to buy it as long as they continue to publish it. I know mags aren't the greatest resource for cutting edge information, but I've always enjoyed reading Ian's takes on players/teams and his analysis is, as others have said, among the best in the business.

I also usually pick up Guru's magazine and I think John is similar to Ian.. independent thinker, good style and they provide good analysis to back their opinions.

Of course, I'm a staunch supporter of our own FBG magazine and I think that ours ranks up there with any of them feature for feature, analysis comparisons and so on. It has all of the ingredients you need from a mag, especially now that we have the game by game stats from the previous year (something I've always loved about FF Index).

The others I've grown away from .. like TSN, Pro Football Weekly, etc. I used to love PFW but since Joel Buschbaum passed on I've lost some interest, but I still read some of their stuff, in particular their weekly stuff on ESPN Insider (That's what we're hearing, or something like that).

I picked up the one from USA Today (Sports weekly or something like that) in the airport a few weeks ago and it put me to sleep trying to read through that within 30 minutes.. I found very little of anything worth value in that, but your mileage may vary.

As a participant in their Experts Poll, I always look forward to the commentary around that and see what the others have to say and where we differ in our rankings (even though we have to send them in within a couple weeks following the NFL draft).

Only reason I buy a magazine at all is to see what most of my leagues draft lists are. I would never, ever use a magazine for any kind of strategy for myself.

Best out there and the only one I still buy. Figure it may be more than coincidental that the FBG mag's cover design is eerily similar.

I always buy FFI for two reasons:

1. It's a great magazine

2. It's what got me started with fantasy football. When we were teenagers my buddy came home with a copy of FFI (before they added Index to the title) and said something along the lines of check this book out, this sounds cool, we should try it. That original league is still in existence and heading into our 18th season. Along with myself and the friend who bought the book there are four other guys in the 12 team league that have played 14 or more years in this league (a total of three of us played in the first year). So for sentimental value and as a thanks for getting us started I always buy FFI.

:loco:

I still have that Tatum Bell issue, and it clearly stated that you should not draft him at the spot they predicted his stats to be, but that you could wait and nab him in rounds 3-4. He was only a mild disappointment if you grabbed him in the 4th round like they stated. Its not their fault people didnt read the fine print.

I always thought that it was done well. Plus it gives you something to read on the crapper.

It's one of 2 I buy every year...FFI and Fanball. I am shocked that there is no fanball praise on here. I don't even like the website, but the mag is one of the most entertaining reads when it comes to Football.

I brought that Tatum Bell issue to work with me and used it as propoganda to trade Bell for a first round pick and a 14th round pick in one of my keeper leagues. I told him, "Look, he's on the cover. You don't just put anyone on the cover unless they're gonna breakout." He bought it hook, line and sinker and I won my league that year. I never thanked FFI for that.

 You like ripping people off?

Best available bar none. Got mine in the mail earlier this week. Last year, there were key ideas and stats in print in this magazine that had not yet surfaced on the web services (and the season was 7 months over).

From all of Ian's stuff that I've read, he watches a heck of a lot of game film.

Seriously? I can't stand Fanball. Now, okay, granted I've bought the magazine because the design is aesthetically pleasing enough for crapper lit, and some of their statistical analysis is o.k., but their copy is godawful. One long string of jokes about pop culture, none of which are funny. I feel embarrassed for them.I imagine their editorial staff meetings as unbearably dumb, and frankly, I'm kind of tired of "mens' interest" magazines in general being written as if we all think of Maxim-style humor writing as the height of wit.
