Farve to Report this Weekend (1 Viewer)

:scottcase: for the end of this season.Congratulations on your Giants. I was rooting for them and Strahan. However, the Giants now have two of the worst Superbowl winning teams in NFL history. (90 Giants is the other)Since we are bringing up old ####, none of your 3 SB winning teams could even compete vs any of the Cowboys winning teams.
Cowboys fans need to bring up ancient wins. None of their curent teams can win a single playoff game.
And yet, they have so much talent.Dallas has nothing to do with Brett Favre, anyway. Am not sure the relevance of congratulating Giant fans on the Super Bowl. But congrats, anyway! A win is a win, especially in knocking off an unbeaten team. This is the type of patter one would expect from Crazy Guggenheim in Joe's Bar from the 1960s Jackie Gleason show after some toddies. Crazy was played by the actor Frank Fontaine for those too young to know.Anyway, since when does Favre listen to what Ted Thompson tells him about not reporting? All this big talk from Brett about what he was going to do this weekend, then he folds with "Well, the GM asked me not to report." The media was clearly played for patsies (NY over patsies in most recent SB) by Brett's jive the past few days. Would love to hear Thompson's version of the Favre's contention.

Would love to hear Thompson's version of the Favre's contention.
Me, too, but if Favre's version is true, then it's total B.S. the way the Packers are handling this. It's like they're afraid of him coming into camp and winning the job fair and square.

Yeah it sounded like he was bluffing to try and get TT to do something. Maybe there was an impasse in negotitaions and Brett was trying to get them going again by threatening to come.Who knows.

It's the end of Favre's career. Fair and square doesn't apply because they have put a lot of work into preparing Rodgers for the job long term and need to move on. Favre clould play a year or two but then wha?Where was Favre last year allowing Rodgers to get some playing time in? Or the year before?

The report really didn't seem odd to me. I could enviosn a scenarion where Thompson told Fvre they were really working on a trade for him and just needed a couple of more days, so in th emean time could he help them avoid a media circus.

Separately, can I do a quick low key hijack here since a lot of people just visit the Shark Pool? David Dodds fans, please go check out his thread in the FFA.

Come on people, Favre has not applied for reinstatement yet! He couldn't report if he wanted to. When is someone going to say "Until you apply for reinstatement we don't want to hear from you".

Phurfur, I've been echoing your message in every post. Even joking about the length of time Favre is taking to compose the reinstatement message. You have been "on point" with the only thing that matters in the whole discussion. In large font. Some of us are just mocking the notion that Favre has leverage when the Pack holds the cards.

And if there was ever a proper reason for hijacking a thread, Mystery Achiever did the absolute right thing. Thank you for that news. What David D is dealing with puts everything in perspective. Nothing takes priority away from a child's condition, so our hearts are with the much-admired Mr. Dodds and family.

Seriously. "Your teams suck that accomplished what our team couldn't" is the best you can come up with?Next time stop with "Congratulations on your Giants".You'll come off as modest and a good sport and have us all fooled. :lmao:

I heard on the FOX affiliate here in Milwaukee tonight that Favre and Thompson had a chat and part of it went something like this......

Favre: Just let me compete, you know I'll win the job.

Thompson: Brett, things are different here now, we are moving forward with Aaron.

If this is true, that's total BS on Thompson s part. Tells me he doesn't care what's best for the team.

Pisses me off. I'm a Packer fan and I want the best damn possible team out there.

From Mortensen's report:"I said, 'Let me compete, you'll know I'll win this job' and Ted said again, 'Brett, things have changed. Aaron Rodgers is our quarterback.' It's pretty clear -- and this is what I told the commissioner -- that they want me to go away, stay retired. They would much rather see me in a Packers' uniform, paying me $12 million to be a backup -- which you know they really don't want -- rather than see in another uniform, no matter what they say. They'll drag this out, asking a king's ransom [in a trade], hoping it all goes away."

Also he's said he has signed the papers but may not turn them in until Tuesday if I read correctly on the ESPN ticker. So while I've enjoyed the large text reminding us all that Favre hasn't signed the papers yet, and that he could have reported to camp today even if he wanted to (ignoring that TT told Favre to stay away while he figured out what he was doing), I hope this can get lumped into all of the other stories about Brett Favre that Packer fans have tried to deny and deflect these past few months.

Why? I don't blame TT at all especially if it is true that Favre expressed his desire to come back the end of March and the Packers were ready to bring him back. Then Brett changed his mind AGAIN and the Packers went and drafted two quaterbacks and named Aaron the starter. The team can not go back on their word and as much as it pains me to say this...Brett brought this on himself and is doing what he can to pass the blame to the Packers. Not to mention how Favre threw TT under the bus with his interview on Fox with Greta. I have been one of the biggest Favre supporters there is but he is to blame here and not the Packers. It is really hard to try and explain this to my son who told me yesterday that he wants to throw away his Favre jerseys.

Good grief, I can not understand this sentiment. Play the guy that gives you the best chance of winning the Super Bowl - the end.If a players EGO is so fragile that he breaks down because another player beats him out then you do not want that player to be in a position of importance.TT is being an idiot. Farve may have (and probably did) frustrate TT by being so indecisive. But now TT is going to win the battle but lose the war.

Agreed I don't like it if that is how it went. However, I don't think it means TT does not want what is best for the team...it just means he is thinking beyond just this year.

Is there some reason here to believe Favre is telling the truth instead of feeding self-serving bull#### to the press again?

I was on TT's side initially, but I am beginning to have my doubts now. Thought he lost some

high moral ground when he said that 'he could come back as a backup...'. I know he immediately recanted but those words seem to have been spoken from an emotional position, rather than a logical one.

Then there was the tampering charges against vikes in which an anonymous( read TT) source released that story to the media....which I do not think Goodell liked very much. There there was the phone thing....

Just seems the longer it goes on....the worse it gets for TT....you hate to do something in a panic mode...but I think he should do something rather quickly.

Ya know, this is a pretty good post. BUT I said earlier I am a Packer fan first, and I want the best possible team out there that can win. Favre give them the best chance. I don't care about all the BS that's happened so far, get the best damn team out there.Yes, I realize Favre brought all this on himself, and I pretty much agree with everything you posted.

Good grief, I can not understand how you don't see all the ramifications Favre's retirement had on the Packers and how they moved forward. Is Favre the best choice for this year? Yes. But the Packers are tired of his antics especially his waffling the end of March. I will say this.....I do think this will blow up on TT and I hope it does. However, considering all the crap Favre has pulled I don't blame TT at all for how he has handled this considering the main factor of Favre's waffling. Remember, Favre started this mess and I am now believe he hasn't been truthful through all of this.

This is beyond ridiculous. Favre has been pulling this crap and started this mess, but TT needs to look at the bigger picture here. Are the PACKERS better off without Favre or with him? Most people will admit....WITH HIM! The one position on this Super Bowl caliber team that lacks depth is QB. Rodgers hasn't exactly been a model of durability. If he goes down, kiss your Super Bowl hopes good bye. Brian Brohm and Matt Flynn won't be leading the Pack to the promised land. Even if Rodgers plays all season, he could turn out to be a bust. We all (Packer fans) hope not, but you never know until the guy proves himself. TT and MM need to swallow their pride and AT LEAST let Favre COMPETE for the job.

I was on TT's side initially, but I am beginning to have my doubts now. Thought he lost somehigh moral ground when he said that 'he could come back as a backup...'. He recanted because he never said "he could come back as a backup"...at least he was never actually quoted as saying so. If he was...someone please post a quote from Thompson saying that before this weekend?Of course there was tampering charges given there was contact that Favre admits.TT would know that Favre has no GB cell phone...so why would he leak that knowing it would come back to bite him in the butt?

Would love to hear Thompson's version of the Favre's contention.
Me, too, but if Favre's version is true, then it's total B.S. the way the Packers are handling this. It's like they're afraid of him coming into camp and winning the job fair and square.

Favre has already been in contact with Goodell, it only takes a fax to get reinstated, doubt if that would take more then a couple minutes. Why would Favre file for reinstatement and then not report to camp, even if TT ask him not to, GB then would ever right to start fining him daily for not showing. TT ask for a few more days and Favre is doing it. Why not wait till the day you report or the day a trade if it happens, to apply for reinstatement.

Favre delays arrival to Packers camp at GM's request

By Chris Mortensen

ESPN.com

Updated: July 27, 2008, 7:46 PM ET

Brett Favre has signed his letter seeking reinstatement to the Green Bay Packers but may not send it to the NFL until Monday or Tuesday.

Favre admitted in a telephone interview that he did not report to the Packers' camp Sunday with the rest of the team in part because general manager Ted Thompson pleaded with him to delay his arrival.

Such is the drama that continues to build around Favre.

He offered to compete for his old job but was told that wasn't possible.

He admits he has spoken to Minnesota Vikings coach Brad Childress but says it wasn't tampering.

Childress explained their talk further during Vikings training camp on Sunday.

"I've always felt like he could play. I told him so right after the game last year when they beat us 35-0. I wish he would have retired. I told him that to his face," Childress said. "He's still got some zip on it. In my mind it's no different than me talking to Donovan McNabb as he's [reporting] to training camp or talking to Brian Westbrook. I communicate with people in this league. You don't leave past relationships."

Favre is open to a trade but not just to the New York Jets or Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

He's hoping commissioner Roger Goodell can mediate the impasse that he has reached with the Packers.

"I asked Ted [saturday], 'Am I welcome in the building if I report?' and Ted was just about shattered," said Favre in a telephone interview. "He said, 'Brett, you can't do that -- you'll get me fired.' I told him I'm not trying to get anybody fired. So Ted asked me to let the guys report and let's try to resolve this over the next two or three days."

Consequently, Favre did not fax a letter he has signed to request his reinstatement as an active player to the league office on Saturday. That did not sit well with Favre's wife Deanna or his agent, James "Bus" Cook.

"Deanna, Bus, everyone here [in Mississippi] says, 'You're so stupid, letting [the Packers] play you like this," said Favre. "They want me to get in there now. I may wait until Tuesday or so."

Nightmare Averted?

The Packers avoided their nightmare scenario when Brett Favre agreed not to report to camp Sunday, Kevin Seifert writes. Blog

• NFC North blog

Favre said that Thompson wasn't receptive to the veteran quarterback winning his job back from Aaron Rodgers. He relayed his most recent conversation Saturday with the GM.

"I said, 'Let me compete, you'll know I'll win this job' and Ted said again, 'Brett, things have changed.

Goodell has spoken to Favre twice, most recently on Saturday.

"Roger is willing to help but he has to be careful," said Favre. "I told him I could easily send in this letter [of reinstatement] but they really don't want me there and it'll be a big circus. They play this both ways. Privately, they don't want me there. Publicly, if I sent in the letter but didn't show up right away, they could always fine me or say, `See, why isn't he here? He really doesn't want to play.' Give me my release and see if I want to play or not."

It appears Tuesday is Favre's soft deadline to report to camp or possibly be traded. According to Favre, Thompson asked him if he was interested in a trade. "Yeah, but not just to the teams you want me to go to," Favre said, relaying his conversation with the Packers' GM.

The Packers have given permission to the New York Jets and Tampa Bay Buccaneers to talk to Favre. The Jets have had conversations with Cook but have not talked directly to Favre.

Favre would not admit that the Vikings are his preferred team of choice but he confirmed he has spoken with Childress and admitted as much to both Goodell and NFL director of security Milt Alherich. The Packers filed a tampering complaint against the Vikings.

"I have never denied talking to Childress," said Favre. "I've known [Childress] for about 12 years going back to when he and Jay Norvell were assistants at Wisconsin and they used to come in and sit in our quarterback meetings. And then Brad went to Philadelphia to be with Andy Reid and, you know, Andy and I are big buddies so the relations continued.

'Like I told Milt and like I told the commissioner, I've spoken to Childress. I've spoken to Darrell Bevell [Vikings offensive coordinator], I've spoken to Andy Reid, I've spoken to Mike Sherman, Matt Millen, Steve Mariucci ... I've spoken to a lot of guys who are my friends and guys who have coached me, either talked to them or left messages."

Favre claims that his communications with many of those coaches, including Childress, was a matter of seeing if it was within reason to change his mind about retirement.

"I called them and asked them, 'Am I crazy? Am I wrong for pushing this? Can I still play the game? Should I let it die? I mean, I think you know what the answer is. I can still play. I said it when I retired [in March]. Now I've had a change of heart about playing but I've always known I can still play."

Favre said Alherich asked him point-blank if Childress or anybody with the Vikings enticed him to play again.

"I told Milt, 'No, I wasn't [enticed],'" said Favre. "I told Milt and Roger Goodell that if talking to teams is tampering, then there's about seven-to-10 teams that are guilty of tampering. But Brad isn't going to try to entice me because he knows that even if he wanted me to play there, it's not going to happen. The Packers aren't going to let that happen.

"So Brad and I, yeah, we talk and we exchange text messages. The Packers know that. After we beat them last year, Brad sent me a text message, teasing me how a gray-haired quarterback could still play. And the Packers were aware of that because I shared a laugh with 'em about that."

Favre adamantly denied reports that the Packers had evidence of his communications with Childress because they had the phone records from Favre's team-issued cell phone.

"That's just bogus," said Favre. "I don't have a Packers' cell phone. Never have. I told Ted [on Thursday] that he and [coach Mike] McCarthy needed to clear up this cell phone thing. I told him they needed to get in front of the media and admit that I don't have one of their cell phones. And Ted said, 'Well, I think somebody already squashed that [story].' But that isn't enough. They need to get up and admit it's ridiculous and bogus."

Thompson did not immediately return a phone message to respond to Favre's version of the story.

Chris Mortensen covers the NFL for ESPN

And yet Brett wonders why Thompson and McCarthy won't let him back to compete. Every opportunity Favre has had he has thrown them under the bus. How would that look to the rest of the team if TT and MM would let Favre back after the things he has said not only in this interview but in the interview with Greta Van Favrefan. It's not Brett's job to run the team. The more Brett speaks, the more he sounds like a crybaby.

I heard on the FOX affiliate here in Milwaukee tonight that Favre and Thompson had a chat and part of it went something like this......Favre: Just let me compete, you know I'll win the job.Thompson: Brett, things are different here now, we are moving forward with Aaron. If this is true, that's total BS on Thompson s part. Tells me he doesn't care what's best for the team.
Yea, that's the quote I heard. This pisses me off :lmao: :lmao: :lmao:
Remember, Favre started this mess and I am now believe he hasn't been truthful through all of this,
I could care lesss about the juvenile, he said she said.Do you want to win a Super Bowl or win a school girl argument?NO ONE has presented a reason that GB should not have Brett Farve has their starting QB this year. At least I have seen no defensable arguments. This has become a soap opera because both are acting like juveniles. That point is not in dispute. There seems to be no real dispute that Farve gives GB the best chance to win this year (and possibly next year as well). So I dont see where there is any dispute in this circumstance. Bring Farve back!No disclamer needed: I am not a fan of GB or any NFL team.

I was on TT's side initially, but I am beginning to have my doubts now. Thought he lost somehigh moral ground when he said that 'he could come back as a backup...'. I know he immediately recanted but those words seem to have been spoken from an emotional position, rather than a logical one. Then there was the tampering charges against vikes in which an anonymous( read TT) source released that story to the media....which I do not think Goodell liked very much. There there was the phone thing....Just seems the longer it goes on....the worse it gets for TT....you hate to do something in a panic mode...but I think he should do something rather quickly.
Well..we are arguing over wordsmithing...rather than the intended meaning of the words. A quote from TT..."We've communicated that to Brett, that we have since moved forward," Thompson said. "At the same time, we've never said that there couldn't be some role that he might play here. But I would understand his point that he would want to play."When asked whether that role might be as a backup or coach, Thompson said: "Not a coach."And we all know that TT/MM have said that they have moved on and that Aaron Rodgers was starter. If A. Rodgers is starter, what does that make other QB's on the roster ?

Would love to hear Thompson's version of the Favre's contention.
Me, too, but if Favre's version is true, then it's total B.S. the way the Packers are handling this. It's like they're afraid of him coming into camp and winning the job fair and square. :lmao:
Come on people, Favre has not applied for reinstatement yet! He couldn't report if he wanted to. When is someone going to say "Until you apply for reinstatement we don't want to hear from you".
 All the posts bashing Favre for not seeking reinstatement officially are willfully ignoring the obvious in order to continue to bash Favre.

Yeah! Aaron Rodgers worked really hard in those minicamps and he deserves to be the starter! How rude!

It used to be willfull ignorance in favor of Favre in the way back time, in the before-retirement land, but ever since then Packer fans have turned quite coldblooded. It's still a common tactic they are trying to use so they can cut the emotional ties with their hero.

you are truly gifted

All of this could have been avoided if Favre would have not changed his mind again at the end of March when the Packers were ready to have him back. This is not the Packers fault.

You know, you may be on to something there. I think Favre is mostly the one to blame for this, but TT screwed up as well. Yet there are Packer fans here who think TT did nothing wrong at all. The only way it makes sense is if they are either dumb, or they want to make it easier to move on without cheering for #4. Hmmm.....

Excellant point, but I have a feeling it will be lost on people who pretend that they were simply telling people that they were discussing rumors instead of trying to deflect the discussion from reality.

I don't think anyone is arguing that it's Favre's fault. I think the argument is whether TT has misplaced this thing badly, which is my opinion. Put on the fake smile, welcome him back, tell Aaron you're working on something and work behind the scenes to trade him for high value. Don't tell him it's Aaron's team now. That was just stupid.

This is beyond ridiculous. Favre has been pulling this crap and started this mess, but TT needs to look at the bigger picture here. Are the PACKERS better off without Favre or with him? Most people will admit....WITH HIM!
And those people are idiots. The team is better without Favre. No media circus, no more wishy washy crap, you don't lose both Favre and Rodgers (Rodgers is not re-signing if they give the start to Favre), and you don't send the message to all your players that all you need to do is whine and complain and we'll give you whatever you want.Honestly, Favre is being a f'n baby. It makes no difference if Favre would be better this year if it means throwing the entire team into disarray for the next 10.

I think the whole thing has been handled poorly by EVERYONE. However, Favre got the ball rolling and the Packers had enough of his waffling.

That was a very strong arm attempt at forcing him to stay retired, and it backfired pretty hard. To the point where Favre is alleging Thompson is scared for his job would Favre had come to minicamp. And yet in spite of all the hurtful things the Packers have done to Favre over the last few weeks, Favre mercifully gave TT the time he asked for so he could continue to work on a solution.

I am truly beginning to see what all the fuss was about this man. He doesn't want TT to lose his job, even while the same man is trying to prematurely end his storied football career.

A true hero.

10 years? Geez I guess Brohm will be waiting longer for his shot than Brady Quinn then!

Also, this whole thing makes me sick. I never thought Favre could act like this and I am dissapointed that this situation has turned so ugly. I will always be a diehard Packer fan and this is a tough situation to swallow. I don't think it will end well for anyone including Favre and TT.

Congratulations on your Giants. I was rooting for them and Strahan. However, the Giants now have two of the worst Superbowl winning teams in NFL history. (90 Giants is the other)Since we are bringing up old ####, none of your 3 SB winning teams could even compete vs any of the Cowboys winning teams.
 Extremely weak.
Seriously. "Your teams suck that accomplished what our team couldn't" is the best you can come up with?Next time stop with "Congratulations on your Giants".You'll come off as modest and a good sport and have us all fooled. :bye:
Oh come on people. Is talking smack to a fan of a division rival really not allowed anymore? My Cowboys have sucked for almost a decade. I have no qualms about that. Sorry, I was just having a little fun and giving the Giants their props for their win. Sucks that you can't poke fun without people taking everything so seriously.

First this, and now they try to lowball Ryan Grant. I'm starting to think that Ted deserves to lose his job. As a Packers fan, it pains me to think that I might be watching Rodgers and Brandon Jackson this year.

If I'm Brett, I fax the paperwork and show up at camp with a smile on my face. Welcome to the circus. Your move, Ted.

They are most likely better off this year with him.

Because Brett Favre may not be the best thing overall for Green Bay at this point in time. While he is the better QB...and would probably lead to a better record and chance at the SB this year...that is not all that the GM needs to be caring about.

Brett Favre is not currently on the active roster...so I guess that makes him a retired player that could not be named the starter.
