A retired NFL player misses the game and is considering coming back? Dont they all? How many actually come back? Funny how he just toys with the emotions of Packers fans though

Former NFL exec: Favre wants to play football

Former NFL personnel man Mike Lombardi writes in his blog that one Packers player told him Brett Favre is giving "real consideration" to making a return.

Lombardi, a 20-year veteran executive, recently worked in the Raiders' and Broncos' front offices, writes for SI.com and started a blog a few months back. He doesn't have the same standards as bigger news sources, but undoubtedly has connections. The Packer told Lombardi that Favre would consider returning with another team if Green Bay won't take him back. Favre was recently placed on the reserve/retired list, however, and the Packers own his rights. Jul. 2 - 3:32 pm et

If they trade or outright release him, that'd be PR suicide for Packer Land. Even though he makes mistakes, he's the face of the Packers in the last decade and a half.

I'm watching this on NFL Live right now. And I agree with a lot of what they're saying, but I also agree that the window appears to be closed for him. He waited way too long. He never should have retired. I don't know what's going to happen, but I'd welcome him back!

hey favre if the pakers dont want you, you got a spot here in chicago if you want.
While they certainly need a contender, the only reason Favre would come back right now is to lead the Packers to the Superbowl. He's not going to want to start over again, the Bears offense just needs too much work and the defense can't carry the team anymore. Favre wants to come back, we all knew he was playing games for months. Now the Packers have made their bed in Aaron Rodgers so I have to think there is very little chance of this working out the way Favre wants.

Until I hear it from Favre himself, Im not buying it. Let me see...training camps havnt started for most of the league, news is slow to come by, no one is that interested on hearing more about the Chris Henry's, Benson's, Lynch's, of the league....I know!! This just in, Favre is mulling over a comeback.

Instant chatter time.

If I was Aaron Rodgers there's no way in hell I would play for the Packers if they do this, even if it meant sitting out. Having said that, I don't think there's anyway they bring Favre back. I'm guess they would give him his release to sign with whoever he wants.

Some team. Not one of the consensus picks for worst team in the league.

Absolutely. Can you imagine what a slap in the face it would be to go from taking questions about being in Favre's shadow, Favre's possible comeback, Favre's locker and calmly stating each and every time that you weren't concerned about any of it because it was your team now...to losing your job to an indecisive attention whore? Holy cow, Aaron Rodgers has every right to demand a release if they even THINK about letting Favre play for the Packers this year.

As a Packer fan, don't know what to make of it. Many of us thought this was a possibility originally, but as the shock wore off, most of figured this could be put to bed.

I'd be really disappointed now if he decided to return. In addition, I would not blame Aaron Rodgers at all if he asked to be moved or released. He's done everything they've told him to do.

It'll be interesting to see how this plays out.

Hearing that on NFL LIve just made me angry if it is true. It is jerking around the team. Here;'s the story at ESPNhttp://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3471189

Also, while Harris did say he made the comment about having the itch, he didn't say anything about him having an interest in returning. And, I realize this next comment will be lost on most of the group here, but Al Harris is a good-looking guy. :towelwave:

If Favre does come back i have a feeling Rodgers would ask for a trade and possibly be granted it. They can groom Brohm to take over after this year (or whenever Favre really retires).

I just don't see GB wanting to deal with the mess that would come if they have to take away the job from Rodgers.

Mort has as much credibility as a Shark's brother's friend lately. Of course Favre has the itch to return to the game. He's been playing it all of his life and then he's quitting cold turkey. He'll probably get the itch again next season. I'm sure Tiki is getting the itch also. The Packers and/or Favre need to squash this now or address it without any vagueness. It's not fair to the team and Rogers who will have to now address all sorts of questions until it's taken care of.

ESPN's Chris Mortensen reports that Brett Favre has told coach Mike McCarthy that he has thought about playing this year.

This follows up a Mike Lombardi blog post along the same lines. The comeback talk is reportedly only in preliminary stages, but Favre's family is encouraging him to play. Cornerback Al Harris says Favre told him he still "has the itch" to play. This situation could turn thorny. The Packers own Favre's rights, but we'd guess that the front office would simply rather move forward with Aaron Rodgers. The coaching staff may lean more towards Favre. Jul. 2 - 4:18 pm et

If he writes a letter asking to be reinstated, the Packers must comply or release him.

Showcase Rodgers in training camp. Trade him to the Bears for a #1, bring back Favre for 2 years, groom Brohm to replace him. Case closed.

Al Harris confirmed it on air. They aren't going to squash it because it's not a rumor. He's considering coming back, and he's going to screw with the team's whole offseason while he rides the fence trying to figure out what he's going to do.No, it certainly isn't fair to the team or Rodgers, but it was rather predictible, and it is funny.

The only thing he confirmed was that Favre said he had an itch. Saying you have an itch is not saying you're going to act on it. Asked a couple of times for more specificity, Harris simply responded that Favre said he had an itch to play. He did not say he had an itch to return. He never said Brett said anything about pursuing coming back.

If he had just decided to stay another year, nobody would have said anything. But he chose to retire. He should do the right thing for Green Bay and let them move on.

I'm pretty sure when he retired he said he'd be bitterly disappointed with anything but a Super Bowl win. The odds of that disappointment are overwhelming. A championship is everyone's goal, but if you can't enjoy the game without winning it all, and you're known for your love of the game, it's time to hang it up.

I agree, however it won't happen. It's too much to give up for Rodgers, though the Bears are desperate (they're almost to the point where they msy not have a good QB in 10 years- can't groom a rookie QB when your starter is awful, and it's tough to just start a rookie). You know what's complete BS is let's say Rodgers goes down with an injury tomorrow, you know how fast Favre's phone is ringing?

....and they would release him IMO.

It would only be BS imo if the packers had cut Favre or urged him to retire. They encouraged him to stay*. He chose to leave. He should be a big boy and honor his word.* from the ESPN story I linked ""I tried to talk him out of retirement," McCarthy said back in March. "Tom Clements [Green Bay's quarterbacks coach] and I were trying to sell him on the concept that he could still play at a high level with 80-to-85 percent of the commitment he had last year."

Good point, however Thompson didn't try to talk him out of it. Thompson drafted Rodgers, I'm sure he wants to use him. I am confident McCarthy wanted him back, but I think Thompson pushed him out the door

I keep losing more and more respect for this guy. He's like Paris Hilton, he can't live without media attention.

I love you Brett but don't do it. Stay home. Its only the right thing to do. Don't pull the chains of all the fans and the Packers. STAY RETIRED!

You're definitely more up on the details than I. But now that he's made the decision, he needs to stick by it. Hopefully this is a non-story stirred up by the lack of offseason news. (Hope you don't take offense; from your location, I assume you're a fan. )

I'm not sure that's it. If he wanted to he could be doing what Tiki is doing. Any pregame show would welcome Favre. I think Brett genuinely misses the game.Seriously, I don't remember the guy doing any commercials till the last year or so. He knew his time was short and cashed in a bit. I say a bit because he's not Manning when it comes to commercials. But I don't remember any Favre commercials when he was winning league MVP's and chucking up 40 TD's....

What?!! We're just a player away.

Who has been filling in for Golic on Mike and Mike in the morning this week along with What's his name? The guy is an ex NFL player and he said that he expected Favre to come out of retirement. So did the D Lineman Osi for the NY Giants. This was before this broke today...

He probably figured that he didn't need to do commercials until about a year ago to get attention. I truly think he just likes to be in the media spotlight.

And he wasn't in the spotlight 3 years ago? If he wants to stay in the spotlight he could be on Fox, ESPN, NFLN, CBS in a heartbeat as well as continue to do commercials...

Packer fans and media have completely expected this and expect these rumors and comments to be floated all pre-season and again and again this time of year for many years to come. That's not to say anyone expects Favre to play again, just that the rumors and unsubstantiated comments will never cease and will come back every training camp for the next several years.

Being a commentator doesn't put you in the spotlight. How many times do you hear guys talking about how well Tiki Barber broke down game film from last weeks game?
