Favre To Retire! (1 Viewer)

Happy trails old friend. Me and my TV will miss you on Sundays and the occasional Thursdays, Saturdays and Mondays...

Pretty sad that the last pass he ever threw in the NFL was that sideline out that got picked and led to the G-Men's winning field goal.

Although it is blasphemous to say this in Chicago, I always liked Favre. Does this mean the best QB in the NFC North is now Kitna? I don't even know whom I would rank second-best QB in the NFC North.

Man, did I ever grow to respect this guy over the years.

As a Bears Fan he was Public Enemy #1 for well over a decade, but over the last couple of years, I just couldn't help but root for the guy as long as it wasn't against the Bears.

I'm kind of suprised to see this decision. Reason one being the same thing Bloom said. I'm shocked that he would want that to be his last pass. Reason two being that he looked like he had a couple of years left in him and the pieces really seem to be in place for this team to make a championship run.

He'll be missed
:football: Well put!

Ding Dong the witch is dead, the wicked witch is dead! :football: Kidding aside, as much as I hate the Packers, I respect them and Favre. He's been great for their franchise (wish he was a Bear). Its funny that he decided to retire the one year when there was the least talk of him retiring.

You have to wonder if at his age he wondered if he could replicate last year's performance. The expectations were pretty high for this team coming into the season.

The funny thing is, you could still make the argument the Packers might still have the best qb in the division.

Whmever the Packers backup is (Nall? Martin? Dalton Bell?!?!) will see some action this year.
LOLId say you will see a veteran in there this year as his backup and a moderately high draft pick as well (2nd even possibly...more likely a 3rd or 4th IMO)

He will be missed. He reminded me of a neighborhood kid playing football in the back yard. No one ever acted like they enjoyed themselves any more than he appeared to. He never lost sight of "playing a game".

He was just a big kid out having fun with the boys.

Timing ....Day after Moss resigns with the Pats :football:
Moss was not coming to Green Bay this year. Those rumors, were just that rumors. Moss was not going to leave the best organization with the best quarterback to come to a team with a QB on his last legs. Plus Favre had plenty of weapons now so this is NOT the reason why he retired.

It's not blasphemous at all--I've heard Bears owners say the same/similar things.

I alway thought he was overrated and threw far too many INT's with the whole "gunslinger" mentality. Last year I really enjoyed his play (well until the last game) and actually found myself rooting for him. He will certainly be missed.

As a Packer fan, I felt for the last year that I would have no problem with Favre retiring, but now that it's happening, I'm numb. I never thought he would retire this year after a great regular season, and ending the year in the playoffs with the intercetion. I don't really know what to say. This news is dominating all local news coverage.
 This is exactly how I feel. Thanks for the memories Brett. It's been a spectacular run. I can't imagine how hard it will hit me on the season opener. I guess I should make plans to go to Canton in 5 years at the induction ceremony.

LOS ANGELES (TICKER) —Brett Favre’s legendary NFL career is apparently over.According to a report on FOXSports.com, the record-setting quarterback for the Green Bay Packers has decided to retire after 17 seasons. Favre reportedly informed the Packers of his decision within the last few days, and it’s unclear when Favre and the team will make his decision known.Favre, 38, has flirted with retirement during the past two offseasons. Many expected him to call it quits after a disappointing 2006 season, but Favre saw encouraging signs in the Packers’ rebuilding and said he wanted to return. His decision was justified by an outstanding season. Favre led a young Packers team to a 13-3 record, throwing for 4,155 yards and 28 touchdowns. His quarterback rating of 95.7 was his best in 11 seasons.During the course of the season Favre has broken three NFL records, becoming the all-time leading in passing yards (61,655 yards), touchdown passes (442), and career wins (160).Favre has started 253 consecutive regular-season games for the Packers, a streak that dates to September 27, 1992.The only three-time MVP in NFL history, Favre is the all-time leader with 5,377 career completions. He has made eight Pro Bowl appearances and is set to make his ninth on February 10.
the last sentence makes it appear it was known for at least 3+ weeks

Romo is the new Favre with the same mentality.

Moss didn't play for the giants last year

ESPN radio is saying two sources said that he told them he would have stayed if they would have gone out and got Moss.

And now cowherd is whining about it from some supposed opinions of his agent.ESPN has to have something to talk about.

Wow....Maybe my favorite player of all time. This is a sad day indeed.

To Brett. Thanks for all the great games. A true champion...

To Brett

Let him leave then. That is ridiculous. They have the same agent so that thread exists, but they went to the NFC championship game without him. It is both a sad and exciting day. I am anxious to see what Rodgers can do and what they will do with a truck full of money.

Although I am not a Packer fan it is always hard to see someone of his caliber retire. I took my oldest son last year to watch him play in Kansas City. It was wonderful to be able to share with my son what this guy represented to me in my earlier years. To me he represents the end of my youthful era watching the NFL. His moments in Super Bowl history should out weigh the negatives from the press of staying to long. With this in mind whoever doubted him and his longetivity should also remember he almost captured the magic again on his last season. Personally I admire his tenacity and his ability to admit his mistakes including his addictions. How many other athletes could learn from his example?

My question to everyone is regardless of your team loyalties what is your final perception of this man and his accomplishments off and on the field? We should have a post of memories so to speak in credit to his accomplishments in my opinion. Its always good to see things through other peoples eyes.

Thanks for the memories Brett.

Still nothing on Packers.com (but makes you wonder about their accidental announcement last week). But until I see it there, I will remain in denial.

From channel3000.com

According to FOXSports.com and ESPN.com, Brett Favre has decided to retire. The WISC sports team is working to confirm this report and will have more as soon as it becomes available.
I'm in denial until I hear it from him.

My final perception is that it can be debated whether he was the greatest qb of all time, but I think he is one of the top 5 football players of all time. He personsified the sport.

Let me preface this by saying I like Favre and think he's a great QB.

Thank God this long ordeal is over. The amount of attention and manlove he's been getting these last 5 years or so with every 'is he or isn't he retiring' story has been sickening.

We have been blessed to watch one of the greats every Sunday. Thanks for the memories Brett!

The game against the Raiders right after his dad died is one of the best performances we'll ever see.

Now he can focus on his acting career.

Great competitor. Great career and appears to be a good guy as well. Good luck to him.

Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre has decided to retire.

Favre

ESPN's Chris Mortensen reported that according to Favre's agent, Buss Cook, Favre informed Packers coach Mike McCarthy of his decision Monday night.

A sure-fire first-ballot Hall of Famer, Favre, acquired in a trade with the Atlanta Falcons, led the Packers back to the NFL's elite. He retires with 5,377 carrer completions in 8,758 attempts for 61,655 yards, 442 touchdowns and 288 interceptions, passing Dan Marino's touchdown mark last season.

As a player Favre was known for his durability, his willingness to take risks and turn broken plays into big gains and the way his love for the game was evident in the way he played. He went to a pair of Super Bowls in 1996 and 1997, winning it all on his first try, as well as nine Pro Bowls.

Cook said as of Tuesday morning, there were no plans for Favre to hold a news conference.

Favre, who returned for the 2007 season when many thought he should have left the game, had a career renaissance in his final season and led the Packers to the NFC Championship Game, where they lost to the eventual Super Bowl champion New York Giants in overtime.

Mortensen reported that Favre, who wanted the Packers to obtain Randy Moss when he was a free agent last season, had once again pushed for Moss to join the Packers. Favre had spoken to Moss late last week and was willing to commit to more than just this season if Moss and the Packers could come to an agreement. But the Packers did not pursue Moss, who re-signed with the Patriots on Monday.

ESPN NFL reporter Chris Mortensen contributed to this story.

Al Jones just confirmed it. So that pretty much seals it. Now the Packers will have to go out and sign Billy Volek.
