FBI raids homes of Occupy activists: US newspaper

Tue Aug 14, 2012 1:51AM

A US newspaper has revealed that the FBI has been raiding the houses of anti-Wall Street protesters in Oregon and Washington in what the agency describes an “ongoing violent crime investigation.”

The Oregonian newspaper reported that heavily-armed domestic terrorism units of the FBI have been raiding the homes of activists in Seattle and Olympia, Washington and Portland, Oregon over the last month.

The report said that at least six homes have been raided in the two states since July 10.

The FBI has described the raids as part of an ongoing violent crime investigation, linked to last year’s Occupy May Day protests, during which a number of minor acts of vandalism allegedly took place.

In one of the raids, eyewitnesses reported as many as 80 agents in body armor, wearing military fatigues, and armed with assault rifles participated in the raid.

“I just heard lots of pounding at 6 o'clock, and I got up and I saw the whole thing," said one of the eyewitnesses, adding, "I saw them screaming to get in. They were using the battering ram, and then finally the door just opened.”

FBI spokeswoman Beth Anne Steele told the newspaper, “The warrants are sealed… and I anticipate they will remain sealed.”

The paper said the agents were searching for “anti-government or anarchist literature or material” and “documentation and communications related to the offenses, including but not limited to notes, diagrams, letters, diary and journal entries, address books, and other documentation in written or electronic form.”

The Occupy Wall Street movement began when a group of demonstrators gathered in New York's financial district on September 17, 2011 to protest against corruption, the unjust distribution of wealth in the country, and the excessive influence of big corporations on US policies.

The station has been criticised for its uncritical embrace of provocative stances. For British journalist Nick Cohen the station is "a platform for the full fascist conspiracy theory of supernatural Jewish power"[3] and for commentator Douglas Murray it is the "Iranian government’s propaganda channel".[4]Responding to Cohen and others, George Galloway, the British MP and Press TV's best-known UK presenter, has said it "challenges the prevailing orthodoxy" by providing an outsider perspective on "the truth and a voice for the otherwise voiceless".[5] Mehdi Hasan of the New Statesman has argued that "engaging with Iran, no matter who is in charge in Tehran, is a prerequisite for peace and progress in the region. The very fact that Press TV is Iranian-owned makes it the ideal English-language platform on which to do so."[6]

http://www.oregonlive.com/pacific-northwest-news/index.ssf/2012/08/two_portland_residents_facing.htmlSo they raided the homes of suspected anarchists who destroyed federal property, but they're the victims.
For the record, I did not say that.
Oh, not saying you did. I'm pointing the  at those who were the targets of the raids.
Well maybe they are victims. Maybe this is intimidation by the government. The FBI has certainly been down that road more than once and you don't need Iranian news to know that. Or maybe it's legit but I'll need a bit more than the Feds word on that.

"National Weather Service Follows DHS In Huge Ammo Purchase

Why would the National Weather Service need to purchase large quantities of powerful ammo? That’s the question many are asking after the federal agency followed in the footsteps of the Department of Homeland Security in putting out a solicitation for 46,000 rounds of hollow point bullets. A solicitation which appears on the FedBizOpps website asks for 16,000 rounds of .40 S&W jacketed hollow point (JHP) bullets, noted for their strength, to be delivered to locations in Ellsworth, Maine, and New Bedford, Mass.

A further 6,000 rounds of S&W JHP will be sent to Wall, New Jersey, with another 24,000 rounds of the same bullets heading to the weather station in St. Petersburg, Florida.

The solicitation also asks for 500 paper targets to be delivered to the same locations in Maine, Massachusetts and New Jersey.

The National Weather Service is is one of six scientific agencies that make up the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

The solicitation requires a response by August 21.

The NWS is following its federal counterpart the DHS in securing large quantities of ammo. Back in March,Homeland Security purchased 450 million rounds of .40-caliber hollow point bullets that are designed to expand upon entry and cause maximum organ damage, prompting questions as to why the DHS needed such a large amount of powerful bullets merely for training purposes.

As the Business Insider notes, hollow point bullets have been “illegal in international warfare since 1899.”

The DHS is also planning to purchase a further 750 million rounds of different types of ammo in a separate solicitation that also expires on August 20, including 357 mag rounds that are able to penetrate walls.

The DHS recently put out an order for riot gear in preparation for the upcoming DNC, RNC and presidential inauguration. The U.S. Army is also busy buying similar equipment.

The DHS also recently purchased a number of bullet-proof checkpoint booths that include ‘stop and go’ lights.

The federal government is clearly gearing up for the likelihood of civil unrest on a scale that could outstrip what we’ve already seen in countries across Europe.

While the establishment demonizes the second amendment in light of recent mass shootings and legislation is prepared to ban the sale of large quantities of ammunition online, the federal government is acquiring ammunition at levels necessary to fight a full scale domestic war."

Our founding fathers had their own propaganda outlets. They opposed a tyranical government, and without their own propoganda outlets we would probably still be under that tyrannical government today. I'm more interested in finding the truth than I am concerned about something being a propoganda outlet. If I lived in the 1770's to 1790's, and automatically ignored propoganda outlets, I would have ignored what the founding fathers of the USA were saying.

I'm not suggesting at all that what PressTV is saying is right. Only that they could be right, despite be a propoganda outlet. They could be completely wrong as well.

If the US is being a tyrannical government like England was being in the 18th centurty, we citizens of the US likely wouldn't learn that internally. We would only learn that from external propoganda. I question what the US is doing in Iran... and in Syria, and Libya, and Iraq, et al. I'm not convinced what we are doing is right. I'm also not convinced that what PressTV says we are doing is right either. Like most situations where two parties completely disagree, the truth is probably somehwere in the middle.

This post is not true.

No surprise the NWS would be armed. The FDA agents are, so stands to reason most every type of federal agency has access to weapons.

In no way am I supporting the protesters or the FBI her, but there is overwhelming evidence the government has a lot of secrets, isn't fond of sharing them and for the most part the mainstream media leaves it alone. This is nothing new, but that doesn't make it any less dangerous or improper.

This post is not true.
We talked to Scott Smullen, the Deputy Director of NOAA Communications & External Affairs who says the announcement is a mistake and is apparently being corrected at the time of this writing.

From Scott's email:

Due to a clerical error in the federal business vendor process, a solicitation for ammunition and targets for the NOAA Fisheries Office of Law Enforcement mistakenly identified NOAA's National Weather Service as the requesting office. The error is being fixed and will soon appear correctly in the electronic federal bidding system. The ammunition is standard issue for many law enforcement agencies and it will be used by 63 NOAA enforcement personnel in their firearms qualifications and training.

Last night's post mentions that the "NOAA overseas the National Marine Fisheries Service, which is responsible for all U.S. marine resources. The acquisition mentions this agency, NMFS and the OLE — Office of law Enforcement."

The reason for the number of rounds is explained in a follow up question:

Agents and officers are required to have 200 rounds in his or her duty bag, and twice-a-year firearm qualification and training calls for agents to use another 500-600 rounds. In addition, firearms instructors with more than one pistol may need more rounds in a year. In 2011, the guidance was that each agent and officer would need 700 rounds per year to meet these requirements.

Smullen says there are 111 special agents and 23 enforcement officers, bringing the total number of OLE agents to 134. "And here," he says, "is a succinct way of explaining what OLE folks do:"

NOAA officers and agents enforce the nation's ocean and fishing laws to ensure a level playing field for fishermen and to protect marine species like whales, dolphins and turtles.

From the NOAA Office of Law Enforcement website:

NOAA's Office of Law Enforcement is dedicated to enforcing laws that conserve and protect our nation's living marine resources and their natural habitat. Our goal is to assure that the many people who enjoy these resources for recreation or rely on them for business follow the rules that will maintain the species for future generations.

NOAA's Office of Law Enforcement protects fish stocks from depletion and marine mammals from extinction. We also protect the livelihoods of commercial fishers, the hobbies of recreational fishers, and the health of seafood consumers.

Extensive Area of Jurisdiction

NOAA's Office of Law Enforcement is responsible for carrying out more than 35 federal statutes. The agency's jurisdiction spans more than 3 million square miles of open ocean, more than 85,000 miles of U.S. coastline, the country's 13 National Marine Sanctuaries and its Marine National Monuments. It's also responsible for enforcing U.S. treaties and international law governing the high seas and international trade.

Sorry I confused Fish and Game with National Marine Fisheries Service

Fourteen protesters arrested on disorderly conduct charges while marching through the East Village in 2012 received a payout of $583,000 — the largest Occupy Wall Street-related settlement in the city to date, lawyers for the plaintiffs said Tuesday.

The protesters were marching from Zuccotti Park, where the movement against corporate greed started, to Second Ave. and Ninth St., when they were surrounded by NYPD officers. The protesters were told to disperse, but said they were not given an exit.

“This was an unconstitutional, unlawful order,” said attorney Wylie Stecklow.

Not all slaves were treated horrible. I seriously doubted George Washington beat his slaves. By most accounts he was pretty good to them. Allowed them to have their own garden to make extra money. Paid them extra for working on Sunday or gave them time off. Not saying that slavery was a party, but it could be presented in a better way. It is a delicate issue and should be taught in a way that does not demonizing a whole race. Do you want to get back to teaching history that the Jews killed Jesus and own lots of our banks and run much of the media? There is truth to that too, but if you present things in an unbalanced way it is very dangerous.
