Female Comedic roles in the movies (2 Viewers)

Tea Leoni and Cloris Leachman were both very funny in "Spanglish".

I'm a bit biased though, being the only person alive who thinks that was a great movie.

Jean Hagen in Singin' in the Rain ...absolutely brilliant performance as the self-absorbed, and self-deluded, diva

Jaime Lee Curtis in A Fish Called Wanda ... she was the glue that held that fantastic comedy together

Christina Ricci in the Addams Family movies ... best comedic performance by a little girl

and I'll probably get a lot of flack for this, but I thought the best female-driven comedy was Clueless with Alicia Silverstone, Brittany Murphy, and Stacey Dash.

In Christopher Guest's mockumentaries there are usually a few female comedic roles that are pretty funny.
Jane Lynch is funny in both A Mighty Wind and Best in Show.
She's funny in everything she does. Though, I have not seen "Glee" (and have no plans to change that).
She had me rolling in
Yes. Lynch was also very funny in 40 Year Old Virgin.I think Parker Posey is funny in pretty much everything.

Elizabeth Banks in "Zack and Miri Make a Porno". Pretty funny in the small 40 YO Virgin role too. Hilarious in 30 Rock, but that doesn't count.I think she's amazing, in general, and I'm not sure many actresses could've pull that role off as well.

Madeline Kahn in "What's up doc" with Ryan O'Neal and Barbara Streisand.

She lived up to her character's name, "Eunice Bannister".

off the top of my head... carole lombard was excellent in "my man godfrey" and myrna loy was superb in the "Thin Man" movies with powell. debbie reynolds too.

If you are gonna say Stacey Dash, you better say Moving with Richard Pryor.

Carole Lombard (good call, Saints!) in It Happened One Night. First movie, I believe, that swept the Oscars.Another oldie - Katherine Hepburn in The Philadelphia Story.

Awesome posting. Streisand even showed some pretty good comedic chops. This is a very underrated/forgotten movie.
This was one of my first non-disney films I saw in the movie theatre when I was 8 years old. I loved the confusion over who hadwhat bag, and the chase scene at the end is awesome. Streisand was good in this movie.

Rosalind Russell in His Girl Friday

Katherine Hepburn in The Philadelphia Story (and Bringing Up Baby, as mentioned above)

Mae West

Olympia Dukakis (Moonstruck and Steel Magnolias)

Katherine Heigl in Knocked Up

Elizabeth Hurley in Austin Powers (1st one)

Don't really have anything but Laurie Metcalf tehnically qualifies. Only movies I seen her in a comedy role was Beer League. But she was absolutley amazing in Roseanne. By far and away best comedic actress imo.

Another oldie - Katherine Hepburn in The Philadelphia Story.
 A story about a guy losing his job because he has AIDS and then dying is "comedic"?
is this a poor attempt at humor? If not, "The Philadelphia Story" is not the same movie as "Philadelphia" which stars Denzel Washington.
Pretty sure you're thinking of "The Philadelphia Experiment."
and I'm pretty sure Lllama was thinking of My Girl. (Spoiler Alert)

In The Philadelphia Story, Hepburn is more often the straight woman to Cary Grant bringing the funny. I think a better comedic role for Hepburn was in Holiday, where she was the main one bringing the funny to the movie. Even more so than Bringing Up Baby, where everyone was doing slapstick.

"it happened one night" was with claudette colbert but a good call on the film though. she's fantastic in it. hepburn always seemed better alongside spencer tracy. "adam's rib" for example, is where she showed off some comedy skills. speaking of hepburn, i also loved audrey hepburn ability to get a laugh (she also knew how to mug for the camera too). shirley maclaine was really good in "irma la duce".

Gracie Allen also deserves a mention. George Burns admitted that he was the straight man in that duo and said he realized it early when he wrote lines for himself but Gracie was getting all the laughs.

This may be the least-close (speaking of which, Close was very funny in Garp) choice i've ever made in this forum & she hasnt even been mentioned. Frances McDormand in Fargo, handsdown.

if i had to choose one female character from *any* Coen Bros film, it would have to be holly hunter's portrayal of Ed in "raising arizona". hunter really stands out in a film full of fun and funny performances.

I liked Reese Witherspoon in Sweet Home Alabama and Sandra Bullock in Miss Congeniality.
