Fence Estimate (1 Viewer)

Alright FBGs I need help with another estimate, I'm having about 200ft of 6 ft, white vinyl privacy fence put in.  I'm not sold on the white vinyl but that's what in the estimate.

The quote from a firm from Angie's list was $6,800.  Couple of gates but nothing else unusual.

And before everyone says to do it myself, I've done enough digging and water prevention crap in my yard to know that after about a foot down you hit nothing but rocks and it sucks.  I think I've earned a reprieve from digging a billion holes if I'm not getting totally ####ed.

How bad am I getting ####ed?

I got the cream color or whatever it's called basic vinyl 6-foot put in just short of 200 feet but I got a special five foot gate installed and then a regular gate on the back end and I was like 7500 or something

I did about 125 feet with 3 hand made gates (with 2 helpers) for about $1400 in 4 days. Though that was just some treated wood panels, not vinyl. For comparison your cost just for materials would conservatively be doubled. So ultimately $3-4k for labor/convenience probably isn't too far off

We just got another estimate from the same company for 290' of both white vinyl and cedar.  The vinyl estimate came in at $12.5k.  I shot the dude an email asking why 50% more fence is costing me 80% more (no rough terrain or anything).  He also gave us an estimate for cedar (which is what I think we'll end up going with) of $13.5k.

Shouldn't things like fencing go down in unit price the more you buy?

You probably didn't reach a certain price point.  I had multiple estimates on some chain link fencing when I moved (back and back+front) and the price didn't change much per ft of fence.  I don't know if it's because it is highly labor intensive, or more if there are local business competition factors at play.  I never looked into lame ### vinyl privacy fence, but I suppose that price isn't bad.

Ok,maybe not go down but go up?  This dude's been pretty cool and responsive the whole time so we'll see what he says.  If he knocks the cedar price down a grand or two we'll sign.

Is this land wooded?  Some of my land was and they reflected it in the price of my job.  You should go for the cedar.

Stopping on the edge of the wooded part and the land is flat.  Aside from dealing with rocks while digging it should be an easy install (from their perspective).

Something doesn't seem right on that price. I agree why would the price for 90 ft more of fence raise the price per ft for the whole project.

If I did my cedar fence again, the route I would take is to 1) buy the cedar lumber myself, 2) pay some shlub to dig the post holes and set in concrete, and 3) cut and screw the rest of the fence together myself.

Probably would have saved myself a few thousand dollars doing it that way and would have avoided the super annoying parts of building the fence.

I was quoted 32.50 per foot in January for 117 feet.

I spent 900 in materials for treated pine, 2600 lbs of concrete, with two gates.  Covered just under 90 feet.

Removing the chain link was the hardest part.
