FFA Official Horror Movie Thread Catching up on Shudder and Various Streaming Platforms (6 Viewers)

Its Friday the 13th, and all of the movies are up on Amazon Prime right now, so unless you did a full marathon back in October there's no excuse.

No excuse besides 1/2 suck? ;)

I did dvr them, at least most.  I think they  were playing all but X and the remake on Flix or some channel like that.  Not sure I could make myself watch the remake again anyway.

Are you saying parts 1 and 2 sucked or that half of them sucked?  I guess it doesn't matter because both statements are wrong.

I did wink.  I still love them for what they are and watch them, but you can't say with a straight face that 3, 5, and 8+ are quality movies.  I think 1, 2, and 6 are damn good horror movies.

Well 3 is one of the first horror flicks I saw as a child, so the nostalgia there is awesome.  The others are pretty much all good fun.

I could see that.  My first was the original Nightmare on Elm Street.  Loved the hell out of Freddy and those movies growing up, but now I would rather watch the Friday the 13th or Halloween series.  The only Friday the 13ths that I actively don't like are 5 with it's stupid twist and the remake with Jason digging tunnels or whatever the hell was going on there.  The others I enjoy to varying degrees.

Now you've got me wanting to watch some tonight.

Currently watching the Disappointments Room.  All I can say is Kate Beckinsale as a blonde, yes ma'am!  I have a feeling I'll be giving the movie a much lower rating.  But push through I will mainly due to the lovely Ms. Beckinsale.

I remember my wife and I buying into the entire Blair Witch mockumentary (was being shown on Sc-Fi channel if I remember correctly) hook line and sinker. We went into the original Blair Witch totally believing this was based on a true found footage story.

It made for a great experience. At the time it was a brilliant marketing campaign. It worked like a charm.

I will check out the new one which is supposed to be a true sequel correct?
Yeah, we saw the original in the theater on opening weekend. Fun experience, especially after reading up on it before going in. Although we knew it was all fake. Still, a great marketing campaign. I'll have to check out the sequel as well.

Pleasantly surprised with The Visit. Like many others, M.Night has kind of ruined his reputation with some clunkers. I never saw The Happening though since it was so universally panned.

XX has potential

Girl House

Plenty of T&A  not very scary but I enjoyed the views

A HALLOWEEN-style slasher for the digital age, it follows a beautiful young college student who, needing money for tuition, moves into a house that streams content to an X-rated website.

As expected, Kate's beauty alone couldn't carry the movie.  2/5

Anyone who likes the zombie stuff, I just watched "Rezort" on netflix.  Interesting little zombie flick where people go to an island and pay to shoot the zombies after they won the original "war" against them.  Worth a watch if you are struggling to find any new zombie stuff, which I was.

Therapy - Amazon/Shudder - French police follow the trail of a missing family via found footage tapes.  This french movie goes back and forth between found footage with the story of the police investigators trying to piece together what is happening.  I found this to be one of the creepiest found footage movies in recent memory and while this story's concept has been done before, this is one of the best I've seen.  You realize there's something not quite right as the plot unfolds as a seemingly cliche found footage slasher movie, then you get the double twist reveal at the end and it just ends up being a great overall package.

Awesome. Watching this tonight

Children Shouldn't play with dead things (1972) - now available on Amazon Prime. More of comedy/horror I guess. One of the first Horror movies  I saw and it scared the #### out of me. Has always had a special place in my heart for that reason. I haven't seen it in 20+ years and seeing it on Amazon brought back a lot of memories. GF has never seen it so we are going to watch it this weekend.  :excited:

Trivia - Directed by Bob Clark, who also directed A Christmas Story and Porky's.

Speaking of Bob Clark, he directed the excellent Black Christmas two years after the above movie.

I love me some Orville.

Has "The Wailing" been mentioned in this thread? It's a Korean horror movie on Netflix.
I've only gotten through the first half cuz it's so dang long, but there have been plenty of creepy parts already and I haven't even gotten to the meat of the story yet (according to the summary).

I think I had mentioned it earlier but it absolutely should be mentioned again. Really enjoyed this one and its currently streaming on Netflix.

The Wailing - Amazon Rental - This is one to add to your watchlists.  A Korean movie about a village undergoing random deaths and illness after a suspicious Japanese man moves into town.  First off, this movie is in Korean and subtitled, AND it's 2.5 hours long so there's a bit of effort required here.  You will be rewarded for the effort, however.  Paraphrasing from an IMDB review that put it best, "by slowly unveiling the real nature of certain characters, the last 45 minutes of the movie will change your perspective on the whole thing. Every few minutes you will switch sides when trying to determine whom to trust and only when the big reveal comes do you realize how detailed the setup to get there was.".  This movie will stick with you, having you asking lots of questions about the characters and their motivations.  The characters are portrayed well, especially the dad and his daughter.  I put this on my best of 2016 list.
Found it. Gonna give it a serious go tonight from start to finish.

IF you end up liking the Wailing, check out Noroi too.  Also very creepy and actually stuck with me more than the Wailing has.

Is that on youtube? The Japanese one about the paranormal investigator, found footage movie? I watched that based on your recommendation last year. Liked it a lot. The last scene was horrifying.

Yeah that's it. That ####### scene with the fetuses.

Has anyone seen any of these (currently on NetFlix)?

The Similars
Under the Shadows
Shelley
Watched "The Similars" and "Under the Shadows" last week.

The Similars (3/5) - On a rainy night in 1968, eight people at a remote bus station waiting for a bus heading to Mexico City start experiencing a strange phenomenon.   Bizarre little flick shot using cameras that make it appear to be a movie straight from the 60s.  Has a bit of a Twilight Zone/Alfred Hitchcock Presents feel.    (Mexican/Subititled)

Under the Shadows (3/5) - After a woman's building is hit by a missile during the Iran-Iraq War, her daughter tells her she is seeing ghosts and a neighbor suggests the missile was cursed and might be carrying malevolent Middle-Eastern spirits.  (Persian/Subtitled).

Both movies were enjoyable.  Nothing great but definitely worth a watch if you're looking for something a little different.

OK, finished last night and I have a bunch of questions:

1. Motivation, why did the devil pick on that village? Were they easy pickins cuz they're country bumpkins and superstitious? Did he expect the young shaman would be hired, so it'd be easy to have someone on the "inside" working for him?"

2. Why did the devil chose to inhabit the body of a Japanese man? Kinda hard to blend in this way, no?

3. Is the act of photographing victims significant or just meant to be creepy?

4. Who is the young girl in white? It's the same girl throwing rocks at them earlier in the movie, right? She had the daughter's hair clip and the wife's sweater, what does that mean? Is she the future ghost of the soon-to-be murdered daughter and mom?

5. Did the devil resurrect the dead driver to fight/distract the cop's posse? Or was there some other purpose also?
I probably have more questions but I can't remember them now.

I have questions as well, but here are my thoughts.

1. I don't think there was a particular reason he chose that village. He was just fishing to see who he could catch (a reveal that gives significance to the first scene of him putting the worm on the hook).

2. No idea. You make a good point. Still, the devil had no problem accomplishing what he needed to, so apparently it wasn't an issue.  From the filmmaker's perspective, it made total sense though - by having the role be played by an outsider, it creates the perception of misdirection (this outsider seems suspicious but is really there to help!) that turns out not to be misdirection at all.  The twist is that there is no twist.

3. Ritualistic. And creepy too.

4. From the opening biblical quote, all the way through to the end, there was the theme about ghosts not having flesh and bone.  She grabs his hand at the end, so I don't think she's a ghost.  I think she may be a Christ-like figure that is the yin to the devil's yang.  That they both collect personal items of the people they are battling over is further evidence of this.

5. That's what I took from it.  The zombie ended up serving as a protector of the devil's house like the dog before it was killed.

My question is this:  It was a complete win by the devil in the end, right?  Even though the cop and the daughter are alive when the credits roll, they are going to end up like all the other murder scenes earlier in the movie.  Agree?  Because it feels like there is some ambiguity in the end, but as I think about it, I don't think there is any at all.

I hadn't thought about what happens after the movie ends, but I think you're right. If the devil can beat the cops then there's nobody to stop him (Japanese guy) from driving the dad crazy and use him to burn and kill more people.

Watching Don't Knock Twice currently.  So far meh.

And Katee Sackhoff is a conundrum.  Sometimes I think she's really hot and other times not so much.  I mean of course I'd always do her but her rating ranges from a 5 - 8 for me.

Solid 3/5 I'd say.  Decent story although a little slow at times.  Sackhoff was a solid 5 the entire movie.

Saw Rings in the theater.

Now, I was a huge fan of the original Japanese and American versions. but wow, this reboot was not good. I usually don't trust critic reviews. but the 5% rating this movie has at RT is well deserved.. The plot was just all over the place and the actors were just so stiff and uninspired. Whoever edited it should be fired from ever doing a movie again, because there were literally scenes where the girl would be walking and then--Huh. what did I just miss? You could actually see where they cut scenes out and then poorly tried to splice the movie together. I honestly wasn't the least bit scared at any point. This is Netflix viewing movie at best.

On the opposite end of the scale, saw Split that same day. Very good movie. McAvoy deserves an Oscar nod. I totally geeked out at the end cut scene.

watched coherence last night

not a horror movie but more like a thriller mystery i guess. its very similar to the triangle and the invitaiton

worth a mention

Evil Dead:     Remake of an older version.  Damn good horror involving some young adults gathering at a cabin in the country.   Cabin has some history involving an ancient book that is in the cabin.  Plenty of "exorcist" moments.  Some pretty scary & disturbing scenes which is what I'm after.  Highly recommend.   4/5 easily.

I really liked this one as well and have recommended it to people.  Also agree that it is in the same vein as Triangle.

Really?  Four out of five stars?  I mean it was good, but not that good IMO. Maybe 2.5 or 3 out of 5.

I wouldn't have given it that many.  I thought it was below average, but I guess I was hoping for the tiniest bit of humor in it.  That's a big reason why I turn to that series.

Watched The Girl with all the Gifts on Kodi last night, and I feel this is right up there with Train to Busan in great recent zombie movies.  It has a very unique spin on the zombie genre and I found the various children zombies absolutely terrifying.
