FFA Official Horror Movie Thread Catching up on Shudder and Various Streaming Platforms (3 Viewers)

Good call on Teeth.

Have already seen The Innkeepers- pretty good.  Have the other two queued (had meant to see Green Room at the theater but it left too soon)
@Keith R

Just so you know Behind the Mask is more of a comedy/horror.  I equate it a bit to something like Cabin in the Woods in that it's poking fun at a genre while also being a great entry into the genre.  Here it's slasher flicks.

I watched "They look like people" last night on Netflix.

I really liked this low-budget Indy horror movie.   It's predictable and strict gorrer fans will probably find it disappointing.  But I liked it and related to it and it'll likely stick with me for a few days.  I'd like to say more but don't want to reveal anything.

Pyewacket is an Amazon rental and the best horror movie of the year so far, IMO.  It’s about a girl who tries to summon a witch to kill her mother. Part supernatural horror, part minimalist horror/thriller, this has a couple of nightmare inducing scenes it at least. Highly recommended.

Caught Demon House on PPV last night. We are Ghost Adventures fans, so we were mildly excited about this movie going in. I have to tell you this movie was really good. There were some scenes in it that were downright scary and just some stuff you can't explain. When you have CPS and police officers being interviewed and they are confirming the details of what went on, that's pretty creepy.

Thanks...sounds awesome!

Thanks. Added to watchlist

watched a interesting one this weekend I had never heard of. It was free with Amazon Prime

 Phenomena

This was Jennifer Connelly's first starring role (one year before Labyrinth) and is...well...interesting. It is listed on wikipedia as  Italian horror giallo and has elements of horror, mystery and supernatural  horror.

I wont go into the plot much but it is pretty bizarre. It is described on IMDB as "A young girl, with an amazing ability to communicate with insects, is transferred to an exclusive Swiss boarding school, where her unusual capability might help solve a string of murders." The last 30 minutes or so are great and worth the watch, especially the ending.

Definitely worth watching, especially if you are a fan of Suspiria. It is 76% on RT

Strangers--Prey at Night---just saw this in the theater this afternoon. Great character development, but  I am sure it is because I have seen too many horror movies, I hate dumb victims. A good movie is one where I can say, "Hey that is what I would have done," but this movie had way too many, "Let's split up," and "You stay here," scenes. My wife and kids know, something like this happens to us, we are staying together with flight or fight as a plan.

This movie was brutal, but dumb. Great soundtrack and I know the piano/synth scores are from another movie which I just can't place.

Solid Redbox rental.

not sure if A Quiet Place is horror, or thriller, or suspense or what, but I am so in for opening day. I couldn't be more in. I'm the innest.
Movie looks great--my wife and I were just discussing it tonight as the trailer was on before Strangers 2. What would you do? You have to keep quiet, but (as the trailer shows) you are having a baby and there is no way you can keep a newborn quiet.

I am a complete sucker for end of the world/monster/zombie movies.

Saw Demon House last night.  Crazy story and sad to hear how many people this place impacted.  Way better than his show imo.

Saw it yesterday. Great pacing. Good scares, wife bruised my arm while grabbing on. Thrills- yep. Good monsters, you see them briefly in the trailor. Doesn't try to answer alot of before and afters which made it well done imho.

this movie is awesome! the hype around it is kinda out of control, but it really is good. Emily Blunt is amazing...good performances by everyone really, even the kids.

one observation...

did the monster look a little Cloverfield-y to anyone else? not to imply any kinda conspiracy or crossover, but the limbs definitely resemble those of the the Cloverfield monster,

John Krasinski did a very good job with this.

How does it compare with "Don't Breathe"? Similar premise but with zombies?

honestly, I don't think it's even close. Don't Breathe was kind of a gimmick haunted house thing, and fun in that way. but A Quiet Place is so much more in terms of scope, character building, emotion, cinematography, etc. I really liked it.

Don’t Breathe

Meh is the best term to describe this movie.  Interesting premise, but it fell short for me.  The story line became predictable about half way in and the ending was weak imo.  I know the sequel is coming out soon so I get the feeling this is going to be like another Saw series.  I hope not, but it has that feel (sort of). 2.5/5

I finally got around to watching Creep and Creep 2 this weekend.  I really appreciate the quality of these films considering their nonexistent budgets.  I think other filmmakers could learn a thing or two about character development from these guys.  The plot in the second one was a little more obvious to me after about 15 minutes or so, but still pretty solid overall.  4/5 and 3.5/5.

Devil's Candy - A decent movie with an excellent if not, the best soundtrack in a horror movie I've ever heard.  The movie has an interesting premise with very, very good characters and scenes, but lacked that certain something to make it great.

The Blackcoat's Daughter - Another one that is decent but fell kind of flat for me, although it has a very creepy atmosphere about it.  One problem I had was that two of the three main actresses look very similar to each other and the movie is very dark (literally) so I didnt realize that they were separate characters until about a third of the way into it.  Still worth a watch if you're into slow burn paranormal stuff.
I just watched these two the last couple nights and really liked both.  I think I liked Devil's Candy slightly more mainly because of the acting by the daughter.  Yeah the soundtrack is kick ### too.  Blackcoat's Daughter I feel I need to see again sometime.  I was embracing the weirdness and the jumping of timelines, but was also getting a tad lost as I was tired last night.

I might have another Halloween pairing for a double feature around the holiday.  I have been watching Tucker and Dale/Cabin in the Woods, but now I might throw in the heavy metal horror combo of Devil's Candy and Deathgasm!

Watched Black Christmas for the very first time two nights ago. Very underrated, little known film. I never even heard of it till I saw KP mention it in his 1974 movie poll thread. Really atmospheric, creepy slasher movie before slashers really existed. I would call this a baby Halloween but on a different holiday. I really enjoyed it.

Have you watched the 2006 version for comparison?

No. Have you?

Can't imagine it being anything like this one. Part of the charm for me is the 1974 (70's) vibe. A young Margot Kidder, and the entire feel of that era oozes from the film.

I haven't caught the 1974 version, but watched a little of the 2006 version.  It was eh.  Probably not as good as the original.

I’m hoping that someone in here didn’t recommend Black Creek because it is turrible.  Seems like a student film with some bad special effects.  1/5

I just saw Hereditary and I loved it. It's very disturbing. I feel like I caught all of the clues throughout but I think I want to see it again now that I know the end.

Saw this in the theater--it was creepy--not overly scary.  I need to see it again to catch it all

Really liked Hereditary too.  Did not go in the direction I was expecting.
the hype for this movie seems to be out of control. Trying to talk my wife into seeing it but it has her nervous cause of the talk. I haven't had a movie scare me or creep me out for ages, would love to catch that one that actually can get me freaked out a bit.

basically is all the hype legit (people saying they can't get images out of their head a week later, etc.)

I was looking forward to seeing this one given the excellent reviews and comparisons to horror movies that I think are actually great.  This one was disappointing.

The slow build up was fairly well done---and it was very slow.  Which does not bother me at all.  I love films that take the time to build characters and develop a mood as long as the payoff is worth it.  Sadly, the ending of this movie did the opposite. It went off the rails. Terrible and disjointed.  And it wasn't scary at all.

I have heard people complain aout the end. I am not one of them, I thought it brought it all together nicely. Yes there are certain scenes/images that are still with me over a week later. More importantly there are feelings that are still with me. The acting is superb. Especially the mother and son. I don't want to go into detail as I dont want to spoil anything but the mom and sons acting during/after the car scene really hit me. Seemed very realistic to me and I could see it going down like that.

Watched Hell House LLC today.  An interesting found footage film.  I liked it better than The Houses That October Built films.  3.5/5.

Cabin 28

“Film” is based on actual murders that took place in 1981 known as the Keddie Cabin Murders.  The acting in this movie is beyond bad imo.  The poster art might be the best part of this movie.  1.5/5.

Saw The Killing of a Sacred Deer on Amazon Prime.  Interesting and off-putting but not really a horror movie.  Free on Prime, so worth seeing that way,

Loved The First Purge!!!

Great entry to the series.......also a Purge TV series is coming USA Network. A 10 episode season. Look forward to it. It takes place 10 years after The First Purge.
