FFA Official Horror Movie Thread Catching up on Shudder and Various Streaming Platforms (7 Viewers)

Watched Tusk again this weekend because my GF hadn't seen it and it's on Netflix now.  Didn't realize, A:  it's a Kevin Smith movie (his most "I have to make this" film since Clerks according to him) and B:  It's based on a true story (someone posted an ad like in the film and Smith saw it.  Obviously the guy was goofing.  I think Smith made the guy an executive producer on it too)

ETA:  This movie would've been so much better w/ out Jonny Depp in it.

Just watched this.

Holy damnit it’s terrible. And yes, Depp somehow drags down an already bottom barrel film.
You wanna watch another truly horrible Smith/Depp(x2) film try and sit through Yoga Hosers.  Has Depp's daughter in a lead role and is just a terrible piece of grade B cheese.  Awful and cringe worthy.

Now go watch it

Thinking about saving this one for a long flight I have next week.  How's the gore/nudity factor in this?  Trying to avoid grossing out whoever might be sitting next to me catching glimpses of the movie.
Gore is not constant but it has its moments.  Nudity is nonexistent

Incident in a Ghost Land

This movie is pretty messed up.  Lots of twists and turns and overall well done.  Kind of had a Martyrs feel to it, but a lot milder (thank goodness).  3.5/5
I liked this one.  Didn't waste time trying to set the scene or develop characters.  Pretty much jumped right into it.  I thumb it up.

14 Cameras

As bad as 13 Cameras. Avoid unless you want the slightest amount of T&A

2/5

Watched Hereditary last night. What was with the ending??
My 14 year old and I watched it two nights ago.   It's like they had a concept and part of a script and started making a movie, but then just winged it from there.   My daughter was literally laughing at parts that should have been creepy/scary and questioning what in the hell they were thinking.

Saw it in the theatre and there was a big group of teens in front of us who all seemed to hate it.  My girl and I liked it alot.  Looking forward to watching it again.  I don't see where you're coming from at all with them winging it.  Seemed very cohesive to me.  What specifically was disjointed to you?

The final direction of the plot seemed thrown together.   It was poorly developed at best, with very little payoff.

Yea, you didn't watch very closely.  There were several hints along the way.  The writers knew exactly what story they wanted to tell.  It was very set up.

Clue me in then. Because I have no idea what that was.
It was a story about a multi-generational (hence the title), devil/demon worshiping cult that does rituals on their own family members to summon their overlords.  Very Lovecraftian. The details are a little sketchy, as I've only seen it the one time in the theatre... but the demon god needs a male host, but got shoved into the little girl because the males in the family would kill themselves or something (The mom kept the eventual host away from her mom, but she got ahold of the girl).  Her "accident" wasn't an accident at all, but a ritual to prepare to bring the demon into a suitable host body.  It was a secret society/occult movie without the hooded robes, caves and overly dramatic recitations from a grimoire. This is why a lot of people say it was derrivitive of movies like Rosemary's Baby or The Omen.  That kind of stuff is fascinating to me.

The Barn

Intentionally campy Halloween slasher movie that takes place in the 80s.  It’s kind of funny although I’m not sure that’s what they were going for.  2/5

Summer of 84 - A different take on movies like Rear Window and Suburbia. Set in 1984, a kid in the burbs suspects that his police officer neighbor is a serial killer. I enjoyed it.

My one problem with this kind of movie, how do people spying on neighbors not realize that they should turn off the lights in the room first?

Frontlight over backlight. Or no light as you said.

I saw Hereditary the other day.  Overhyped and meh imo.  I was disappointed.
I guess I can see how the buzz would get expectations up, but after rewatching it last night, it deserves all the praise IMO.  Beautifully shot, creepy, scary, great performances and casting, cool story. A very mature movie for a genre that tends to be pretty teenyboppy.  Hereditary and A Quiet Place are some of the best horror movies in recent time that I can remember.  Maybe some recency bias, but I think they'll stand the test of time (though I have yet to see Quiet outside of the theater, I can see that being less of an experience in a living room setting).

Enjoyed A Quiet Place quite a bit.  It was well done.

just watched The Witch again (Amazon Prime) for the third time and each time it gets better. First time I watched it I was kind of meh, 2nd time I thought is was pretty good and this time I loved it. Definitely a film that grows on you.
It's on Netflix now too. Gonna check this out this week.

Go watch "Mandy" NOW.  Don't watch a trailer, don't read about it. Just know it stars Nick Cage, it's beyond insane, violent, and fun. MUST WATCH!!

I watched this Saturday night and really liked it BUT:

Those awesome demon guys went down WAY too easy.  I mean, he can hit them with a car and that #### flips over but then he snaps the neck with his bare hands?  Maybe it was because he was on adrenochrome at that point, but still.  The black guy should've gave him some kind of spell or amulet or something that made killing those guys possible.  IDK, they just went down way too soft for how badass they seemed.  The guy with the knife dong was a total ripoff of Se7en, but badass as well.  If I ever drop again I might watch this on the trip.

I really liked the opening song too:  King Crimson-Starless

I watched Deathgasm again a couple nights ago.  Such a great, fun movie.  I think I need to by that, and it's going in my annual Halloween rotation with Cabin in the Woods, Tucker and Dale, and Trick R Treat.

Hell House LLC 2: The Abbadon Hotel

I guess I expected a little more out of this sequel than I got.  It ties up some loose ends and perpetuates the story, but formulaic and boring.  2.5/5

Just watched this last night again and I really hope they make the sequel.

That's disappointing.  Hell House LLC was pretty good I thought.

That sucks.

Giving the first one a re-watch right now and came to recommend it here. One of my favorite FF horror flicks with some actual genuinely scary scenes.

TCM has some old school classics this month. A few I recommend:

The Penalty (1920)- half gangster film, half horror film. Lon Cheney plays a deformed underworld boss seeking revenge on the doctor who mistakenly amputated his legs.

Thur, Oct 4 at 12:30 AM

The Seventh Victim (1943)- a horror film noir blend. When a woman's sister goes missing, the search leads her to a Satanic Cult in Greenwich Village.

Sat, Oct 13 at 2:15 PM

The Phantom Carriage (1921)- there's a lot of A Christmas Carol/It's a Wonderful Life in this dark ghost story. At midnight on New Years, the last sinner to die must spend the next year driving the Phantom Carriage and collecting the souls of the dead.

Mon, Oct 22 at 12:30 AM

"Terrifier" available on Netflix.

Insane Clown terrorizes dopey men and women in an 80's slasher throwback that is filled a TON of violence, gore and some great practical FX. Oh and absolutely zero story.

A Dark Song

Watched this last night. I really liked it. It is a slow burn for a while (basically a 2-person movie), but in the end it's worth it. Not perfect, but well done. Would recommend!

So I have started to watch movies specifically based around Halloween theme. Recent watches are;

Trick r Treat (always enjoyed this one) 3.9 / 5

Abandoned Mine 2.8 / 5

All Hallow's Eve 3.2 / 5

Hallows' Eve (Even though it has Tiffany Shepis, a favorite scream queen) 2 / 5

House of the Witch 2.2 / 5

Hayride 2.2 / 5

Hellions  3 / 5

Tales of Halloween 3.5 / 5

If anyone has any suggestions, that are not the Halloween franchise, I would be obliged....

non Halloween related horror

Hereditary   3.7 /  5

Ghost Stories 3.7 / 5

The Midnight Man 3.5 / 5

Spider Forest 3 / 5

Unsane 3.3 / 5

Bad Samaritan 3.4 / 5

Marrowbone 3.7 / 5

They Wait 3.5 / 5

A Quiet Place 3.8 / 5

i was browsing through one of my apps and it said top horror movies of 2018

a quiet place

the cured

the lullaby

the ranger

diane

dead night

pyewacket

the night eats the world

anyone see any of these?

My favourite time of year! Not sure what to think of the new Halloween movie coming out on Friday with Jamie Lee Curtis. It is 40 years since the first and most famous Halloween came out in a shoe string budget.

Bad Samaritan

Just finished it.  A good suspenseful film and certainly not any gore.  A little predictable, but the story moves well.  3.5/5.

gonna catch "a quiet place" in the next couple of nights. have heard good things about it, but still going with low expectations hoping to be pleasantly surprised.

Watched the Strangers 2 last night. Not exactly sure why, but i found it significantly less satisfying then the 1st one. Not nearly as scary or set up well. Seemed more to do with dumb decisions by the victims then the killers being in control

I am definitely going to see this, but I have a slight concern as to how seriously I can take what I am about to see.  Michael Myers killed his first victim at what, like age 8?  Laurie was a baby.  Then he came back when Laurie was 18, so he had to be like 25 or 26.  Now it's 40 years later.  He has to be at least 65 going around with super strength (probably) and murdering everyone.  He's been in jail 40 years or whatever, probably not exercising, just standing there looking creepy.  65 year old senior citizen who never works out is about to go ninja on everyone.

True, but you're not supposed apply logic to him.  It's like how did he learn how to drive a car and also to find his way to Haddonfield after years of being locked up with a first grade education. ?
