FFA Official Horror Movie Thread Catching up on Shudder and Various Streaming Platforms (3 Viewers)

You literally missed the most fun and gore---power through that last 30 minutes for the plot twist.
That's fine.  I read the plot yesterday afterward, and don't think I missed much.   I am quick to pull the plug on overly cgi (for me) horror movies in general.

I started a night early (I need all the help I can get) with Come to Daddy on Prime.   Saw in on a "best horror movies to stream" type list.   Had some OK moments, but mostly not a great way to kick off the holiday season.

I watched "Till Death" (Netflix) over the weekend.   Seemed to borrow Stephen King's "Gerald's Game" idea a little but had it's own twist.

Nothing great but not horrible either:  3/5 stars

Watched The Banana Splits with the kids the other night (8 and 10)

was fairly entertaining, although it could have been because of the edibles

We have our October Horror Movie list:

Hallowen

Halloween 2

Halloween 3 Season of the Witch

Halloween 4 The Return of Michael Meyers

Halloween 5 The Revenge of Michael Meyers

Halloween H2O

Halloween 2018

Halloween Kills

The Fog

The Thing

In The Mouth of Madness

Prince of Darkness

The Exorcist

The Shining

Insidious

The Conjuring

Dead Silence

Friday The 13th

A Nightmare On Elm Street

A Nightmare on Elm Street 3 Dream Warriors

Wes Cravens New Nightmare

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre

30 Days Of Night

The Ring

The Purge

The Purge 2 Anarchy

The Purge 3 Election Year

The First Purge

It Follows

The Omen

Creepshow

Abbot and Costello Meet Frankenstein

Yeah pretty mainstream......but I love all these movies.

Watched The Unholy on a plane coming back from vacation.

Plot follows a disgraced reporter who covers a supernatural happening where a girl is visited by the Virgin Mary.

Neegan from The Walking Dead is the lead in this one, and was pretty meh. Although I don't think the directing and production helped him out. I watched it all the way through, but I *was* on a plane with nothing else to do. It was just ok.

2.5/5

It's an odd movie for sure

Had never watched The Faculty so wanted to check it out. Pretty great cast that played off each other well, but it fell short for me, 60/100

I Saw the Devil was recommended to me. May try to catch it this week. I am currently half way through House on Haunted Hill with Vincent Price.

Bride of Frankenstein is one I am glad I finally got around too for historical context, but nothing I would probably watch again.

I should have more time tonight and have the day off tomorrow, so I will watch something newer.   Mostly picked the old 2 the last couple nights because I hadn't gotten around to seeing them before, and they were the shortest ones on my list.

So, I'm also 4 for 4 with "horror" movies in October as well.

10/1 - Malignant
It's a B-Movie, but it knows it.  It goes all out and for me was pretty enjoyable.  I'd definitely recommend it if for nothing else to say you have seen it.  I didn't see the twist coming, FWIW.  4.0/5.0

10/2 - No One Gets Out Alive
This one is hard to describe.  It's like a haunted house movie meets a monster movie.  It was a bit hard to follow, but that might be because I had some distractions throughout, so take that for what it's worth.  For horror fans, I think it's worth a watch, and I may watch it again to see if it makes more sense with full attention, but it was just OK for me.  3.0/5.0

10/3 - Candyman (2021)
I'd seen the first 2 movies, but they didn't really stick with me other than Tony Todd is fantastic.  While not absolutely necessary to rewatch them to understand the plot, it would probably help some if you don't remember much about them.  For a reboot, I thought it was pretty good as it didn't retcon what happened in the earlier movies but expanded upon it. 3.5/5.0

10/4 - Werewolves Within
This is a horror-comedy that is heavier on the comedy than the horror.  It's apparently based on a video game, but I had never heard of it.  Lily from the AT&T commercials plays the lead female.  It's OK, but barely registers on the horror radar. 3.0/5.0

I think I'm going to watch Never Hike in the Snow tonight.  It's free on YouTube and is a Friday the 13th fan film and a prequel to their other fan film entitled Never Hike Alone, which was quite enjoyable.

Come Play. Not the worst, but fairly derivative, like The Ring married Babadook. Couple of nice creepy moments.

Watched I See You last night. Thought it was great. Can't figure out what was scarier - the movie or Helen Hunt's face-lift.
We watched that a while back and I seriously thought she had had a stroke. She could barely move one side of her face it was so tightly stretched. The movie was fairly good.

I wasn't a fan.
I like found footage more than most.   I found that the more I thought about it, the more I like it, but IMO they should have leaned heavier into stuff like what she saw at Lake Mungo and I have 0 clue why the stuff with the neighbors was even in there.     The core premise of the ending was cool.

Yeah it wasn't horrible but I didn't find it scary at any level so I was disappointed

We rewatched Escape Room and then watched Escape Room Tournament of Champions this weekend. The first one was better the 2nd time watching. The newest one was very suspenseful, but you really had to stretch your imagination that these people could figure out the clues to the puzzles that quickly.

I mean stuff like (this isn't an actual puzzle) "Look there is a duck. It has twelve feathers. Oh that must mean a calendar and duck begins with a D--so that must mean December. And the duck was facing south and quacked three times, so that must mean..."   Just far fetched stuff like that made you have to suspend belief a lot.

Won't argue with that.   Creepiest moments were also paired with the ####tiest looking "home footage" so I was mostly squinting and trying to figure out wtf I was looking at.

I did interpret that on a slightly different, more dramatic meditation on death and dealing with that, and that part I did like.

Shooting to match you guys in 31-for-31, even if it doesn't work out to 1 every single day.  I am very loosely constructing what I call horror BTW.  Here's what I have so far;

Cat's Eye - I've seen this before but not in a while.  Fun episodic PG-13 level romp from the late 1980s.  3.5/5

Culpa - Short foreign film.  Not great, not bad.  2/5

Nurse - This is a crazy movie reminiscent of the midnight drive-in movies of the 1970s, but with much better cinematography.  If you like cheesefests with a lot of eye candy, you'll love it; otherwise stay away.  I'll give it a 3/5.

Ghost Ship - Caught this on TCM and it turned out to be quite different from what I was expecting.  Worth a look, but maybe not so much for this theme.  2.5/5

Terrified - This foreign film took me by surprise.  Requires your full attention, in part due to subtitles, but it is really worth it.  4.5/5

Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark - Similar to Cat's Eye and is also PG-13, but more episodes and not quite as consistently good.  Still worth checking out.  3/5.

Lake Mungo is one of the better found footage movies, but found footage is really hit or miss for a lot of people, understandably so.  Some of the better ones I like are:

The Taking of Deborah Logan

Creep 1 and 2

REC - (the Spanish one, NOT the American remake)

Trollhunter

V/H/S Series

The Borderlands

Savageland

Hell House LLC

As Above, So Below

Grave Encounters

Of that list, REC is probably the best if I'm being honest.  It's rare for a found footage movie to be good and scary all the way throughout.  Most are 75% filler, but this one delivers from start to finish.  And the ending is one of the scariest and most tense I've ever seen.

Anyone watching Chapelwaite on Epix?  It is based on Stephen King's short story Jerusalem's Lot and a prequel of sorts to 'Salem's Lot.

It started off a little slow but like most good horror is intensifying with each episode.    Definitely worth watching

Watching it, on ep 7. I enjoy it but sometimes feel it's a bit of a slog. Not sure why but feels like something's missing at times, though I'm a big fan of period horror so I'm in for the duration and I like the atmosphere and tone. Hoping for a strong finale.

I stopped for a few days to watch Midnight Mass which I found easier to digest.

Rec and Grave Encounters are at the top of my list.   I joked to my wife last night that I'm nervous about Deb Logan for some reason.

The Bay is one not on your list that I remember really liking.

We are on Ep5 now and it seems to be picking up-albeit slowly. I don't know how much they can do with this story line. They are sort of limited by the number of people they have to work with and the number they have already killed off.

It is like you can see where the story is going, but we keep taking turns away from the destination. The actress that plays the Apple Girl is pretty easy on the eyes I must say.

The Bay is outstanding for a found footage film.  On HBO Max last I checked

Willow Creek is another from the FF subgenre I remember liking a bit.

Of course, we probably don't need to mention Paranormal Activity, Blair Witch, Cloverfield, etc..
