FFA Official Horror Movie Thread Catching up on Shudder and Various Streaming Platforms (1 Viewer)

Tonight I watched City of the Dead with Christopher Lee. This was my first viewing and I liked it quite a bit. Very atmospheric and a classic tale. A wonderfully shocking lingerie scene that I did not see coming. This film was made in 1960 and I am guessing that scene alone was worth it for the guys.

I have been watching the Elvira's 40th anniversary special on Shudder. The last of four films is Messiah of Evil which will also be a new one for me.

I liked In the Tall Grass on Netflix.  Not without flaws but a decent Stephen King bender of time and space.  Not mentioned much in here and not well regarded when it was, but I've wasted time in worse ways.

Finished Only Lovers Left Alive on AMC+, a vampire flick with a great cast but moves at a snail's pace.  Disappointed because it is very positively reviewed but it's my lowest of the month so far at 1/5.

I'm only 5 episodes in on Midnight Mass, but here's a hot take.  So far, it's the best vampire story I've ever seen.  The melding of vampirism and the ugly side of Christianity is simply brilliant.

So, I'm also 4 for 4 with "horror" movies in October as well.

10/1 - Malignant
It's a B-Movie, but it knows it.  It goes all out and for me was pretty enjoyable.  I'd definitely recommend it if for nothing else to say you have seen it.  I didn't see the twist coming, FWIW.  4.0/5.0

10/2 - No One Gets Out Alive
This one is hard to describe.  It's like a haunted house movie meets a monster movie.  It was a bit hard to follow, but that might be because I had some distractions throughout, so take that for what it's worth.  For horror fans, I think it's worth a watch, and I may watch it again to see if it makes more sense with full attention, but it was just OK for me.  3.0/5.0

10/3 - Candyman (2021)
I'd seen the first 2 movies, but they didn't really stick with me other than Tony Todd is fantastic.  While not absolutely necessary to rewatch them to understand the plot, it would probably help some if you don't remember much about them.  For a reboot, I thought it was pretty good as it didn't retcon what happened in the earlier movies but expanded upon it. 3.5/5.0

10/4 - Werewolves Within
This is a horror-comedy that is heavier on the comedy than the horror.  It's apparently based on a video game, but I had never heard of it.  Lily from the AT&T commercials plays the lead female.  It's OK, but barely registers on the horror radar. 3.0/5.0

I think I'm going to watch Never Hike in the Snow tonight.  It's free on YouTube and is a Friday the 13th fan film and a prequel to their other fan film entitled Never Hike Alone, which was quite enjoyable.
10/5 - Never Hike in the Snow
This is actually a short (30 minutes) and I didn't know that.  It's not bad and does set up the other film.  The first kill is incredible. 3.0/5.0

10/6 - V/H/S/94
The third in this series of films.  It's in the found footage category and consists of a wraparound story and 4 "mini" films just like the others.  I didn't like the format in the first two and this one didn't impress me either.  Any anthology movie is going to have hits and misses and I liked 2 of the shorts and the other 2 were just OK.  If you like the genre or the other films in the series, you'll probably enjoy this one.  2.5/5.0

Let's see if I can keep the streak going!  If anyone cares, I'm attempting to watch horror movies I've not yet seen, so every review is based on my first time through.

I will probably be mostly this way too, but there are a couple on my list that I have only seen once that I want to rewatch at some point like Hereditary and Teeth.

I need to rewatch it. I was disappointed in it but I feel like I got confused somewhere along the line. I am a fan of Mike Flanagan. I think I will like it better on a second viewing. I do agree with you on the Christianity view, it's crazy.

I will say there are some really good vampire movies out there. If this is best you have seen I question how many you have seen. 🤔

I mean, obviously he hasn't seen The Lost Boys or Near Dark if he posts stuff like that.  ;)

I know it’s a hot take, but I just love the exploration of how vampirism could be interpreted by religion, and I feel like they executed it perfectly.

And yes, I’ve seen both those movies.

Just poking you.  I haven't seen the show, but I will say that your praise and bolded above have made me really interested in giving it a go.

I've only watched the first two episodes and I'm loving this show.  Great atmosphere that moves along slowly but deliberately.  I'm hoping to finish it over the weekend.

Halloween 3, Season of the witch gets a bad rap because of no Mike Myers, but I have alway thought it was a pretty solid movie.

and of course the great/commercial song

House on Haunted Hill

Halloween 3 Season Of The Witch is a great cult classic. I remember it well seeing it in the theater....I had only seen the highly misleading trailer to that point where no-one knew it had nothing to do with Michael Myers.

I loved it then.....and I love it now. Just a campy Carpenter romp. I also remember people walking out of the theater en masse 30 minutes into the movie.

I loved the idea that Carpenter and Hill had about having a new Halloween movies every year with different stories about “Halloween". It was a brilliant idea that could have spawned sequels all over the place. I am sure everyone in here knows he never wanted to even make Halloween II. But....people (including myself) love Michael Myers.

My Halloween rankings are pretty set in stone thus far (not including Season of the Witch as it is not cannon n the Myers lineage). The top 5 IMO are outstanding Halloween Movies. Then it gets kinda meh overall.....but I still watch em LOL. The only one I really cannot stomach is Rob Zombies sequel. Just awful and I never watch it. I even have come to laugh out loud at Resurrection and But a Rhymes.....my wife and I just crack up watching that junk.....if nothing else is on LOL.

@KarmaPolice I have always enjoyed the original House on Haunted Hill. A classic. I even liked the remake with Geoffrey Rush. Creepy.

V/H/S 94

I think they should have stopped at 2, but here we are. Same old stuff with not a lot of surprises. 2/5

For those who have seen it (all 2 of us I think), is it Ratman or Ratmon?

Watched 3 this week:

Benny Loves You - British Horror Comedy about a doll that becomes evil when the kid is an adult.  Think Ted meets Chucky.   5/10.

RAW - French horror flick with subtitles about a girl in vet school who starts craving raw human flesh.  7/10

Wrong Turn (2020/2021 version) - One of those kids on vacation go hiking where they shouldn't type horrors.  Pretty good though.  7.5/10.

pppfffft.  lightweight.  ;)

What service was that 1st one on?

I'm not a horror movie buff, but why the Scooby Doo franchise has not been used to drive a never-ending chain of horror flicks is one of life's great mysteries.  Billions of dollars just waiting there for someone to pocket.

Surprised my wife has been watching so many with me, and seemingly into it.  3 at the top of my rewatch list are The VVitch, Hereditary, and It Follows.   Think that will end our run of watching horror movies together?

Watching the original Candyman tonight. Malignant tomorrow. After that will be The Haunting (1963). After that maybe Midnight Mass mentioned above.

I was talking about renting the new one tonight, and the wife said she knows zip about the OG, so we might go this route too.

Gut reaction is she would rate them:  It Follows, The VVitch, Hereditary.    I hesitate to recommend Hereditary to any non-horror folks, so not sure how that one would go over.
I haven’t seen hereditary I think wife watched without me once but maybe I’ll check it out

Finished Midnight Mass.  First rate.  Best to go in blind if you can, and be prepared for a very slow burn.  It definitely pays off.

You have good taste in movies.  Those are three bangers.
Honestly, those 3 are huge reasons my faith in new horror movies was restored after being hit over the head with a million sequels and remakes.   I didn't connect with Get Out quite as much, but that needs to be in the conversation as well.

Last night I watched the first movie in Joe Bob's Halloween Hoedown. It was Angel which is a movie I like although I do not feel it is a Halloween movie. The Shtick for the night was he let his two guests pick one of their favorite horror movies.

Angel was picked by David Gordon Green. His segments during the movie were fantastic and I highly recommend finding them if you are interested in horror film making or any film making. He is a really interesting cat and has a very frenetic way about him. I had no idea all the things he has done. Lot's of cool behind the scenes of Halloween talk.

The second movie was picked by Jason Blum and is Terror Train. It was getting late for me so I will have to wait for that to be available next week on Shudder. I am looking forward to it.

Joe Bob is killing it on Shudder. Love the info he gives and I am starting to like Darci which was not always the case.

My personal opinion is Get Out does not deserve to be in the conversation with those movies. The three you mentioned are far better. Again this is all my opinion but I feel the accolades given Get Out were a result of the times. I do own it and I have watch it once a year or so. It's a fine movie but it's not as good as everyone says.

Yeah, after thinking about it more, for my personal tastes and rankings I would say that Get Out is more of an "important" movie than it is a great horror movie.

It's Ratma ( I always watch with cc on)

V/H/S 94 is not good but I can appreciate some of the practical effects.

Yeah VHS 94 was not great.

If I were to put together a "best of" of VHS shorts, it would be the following:

- The one with the documentary crew investigating the cult in Malaysia, and ends with that amazing car chase. This is hands down the best short in the series.

- The succubus one.  Too bad the follow up movie based on it sucked.

- The one with the guy who opens a portal to a different parallel dimension where the other people have freakish monster-like genitals.

- the zombie one where a guy gets turned into a zombie while his goPro is attached to his head.

I have not seen Halloween 2018 and I'm not sure why. With Halloween Kills coming out, I did order the blue ray of Halloween 2018.  I am pretty excited to see it. I really don't know why I haven't yet.
