FFA Official Horror Movie Thread Catching up on Shudder and Various Streaming Platforms (1 Viewer)

Saw Green Room last night and really enjoyed it. Not sure I would call it horror, more of an escape thriller, but it had some decent gore and some very tense moments.
This film is a followup to the film Blue Ruin, which was excellent as well.  Thought this one was great too. 7/10

Saw Krampus this weekend.

I had low expectations, but I liked it. Kind of campy in spots, but the monsters, especially the Jack in the Box, were creepy.

Been thinking about seeing this one, but my PG-13 horror movie snobbiness is giving me pause.  Good to see a couple good things in this thread about it - might tip the scales.

Where'd you see it?

Nice to talk horror with experts.   We are kind of sick, but for some reason we love horror.

Still can't get "The Visit"  out of mind. Awesome flick.

After the Green Room mention, I went and rewatched Blue Ruin, from the same directorlast night on the Firestick.  Excellent flick. Edge of your seat revenge story. Highly recommend.

Can't wait to check out Green Room.

I watched the worst horror movie I've ever seen last night on Netflix.  It's a Mexican film called Mexico Barbaro.

It's an anthology of terrible horror shorts, that were probably made for some high school film class.  Some make no sense at all, some end abruptly and randomly, its just a mess.

If you've ever wanted to see what a troll's penis looks like as its raping a Mexican teen, or if you've ever thought that a great idea for a horror short would involve a girl being forced to drain blood out of her sisters hoo-haw by a claymation demon, then watch this movie.

Saw this last night based on your recommendation.  Really, really good film.  I was on the edge of my seat almost the whole movie.  4.5/5 stars.

GREEN ROOM. Got to see a special sneak preview last night. Go See This. Really intense film, just like his Jeremy Saulnier's, last film, Blue Ruin. Patrick Stewart was great in this . I highly recommend it. 5/5

So... I should watch it then?

You had me at Mexican teen.

The real beauty of a good horror flick is that my wife hates them.  In other words I get to watch unimpeded.   Is that bad?

Ok horror fans, tonight The Conjuring 2 opens. I will be seeing this tomorrow night! A review will be forth coming. Looks great....which has become the norm for James Wan and Leigh Whannell.

Later this month The Shallows (a new great white shark action/horror/survival yarn) opens as well.

For those who never saw this film.....I highly recommend a unheralded Australian shark yarn called "The Reef". Outstanding tension and some real terror.

I'm looking forward to The Conjuring 2 as well, but I will probably be too busy this month to catch it in theaters.
I guess I'll have to enjoy it at home... alone... in the dark. :)

The Conjuring 2 has an IMDB rating of 8.4  and 75% fresh on RT - can't be that good can it?
Well, the Conjuring 1 got a rated R for being too scary (that's a good thing I guess). Not for language, or violence, or nudity. Ratings are weird. But if you liked the first one, it's pretty much the same crew that made the second one. I can see how fans of the genre that watch it opening day would like it.

I didn't love Conjuring 1 as much as everyone else (thought it was a good horror movie, but not great) but if 2 is better I have to go see it in the theater.

I felt the same way. It was overhyped but still a good solid horror movie. On the other hand, I watched V/H/S and The Last Exorcism on Netflix with no expectations and I enjoyed both a lot more than I thought I would.
I think for movies that we're sure we're going to watch, it's better to ignore reviews.

No doubt. All they are is one persons opinion. Art is subjective.

Period.

The Conjuring 2 was outstanding. A worthy and well made sequel, the film displays the horror genius of director James Wan once again. The acting was outstanding and like all of Wan's great work (Insidious, The Conjuring, Anabelle, Saw and Dead Silence) you care for the characters a lot by the end of the film. His reliance on music, lighting and setting the right tension pays off in so many great scenes of sheer terror once again.

If you loved The Conjuring then you know doubt owe it to yourself to see this on the silver screen.

Saw a few obscure ones recently.

Noroi: The Curse: A Japanese documentary style found footage film about a paranormal investigator who is investigating a few seemingly unconnected incidents until he begins to discover otherwise.  This move is very Japanese especially in the beginning, but it ends up being one of the best found footage movies I've seen.  Great acting, eerie atmosphere and just super creepy all around.  It's one of the few movies these days that manages to terrify you without cheap jump scares.  This movie is not available on Netflix or Amazon, but the full movie is up on Youtube.

The Possession of Michael King: After a guy's wife dies, he vows to disprove the existence of the paranormal by trying to get himself possessed by demons.  This movie tries to be found footage but suffers from the classic problem of getting the viewer to question why the character(s) would be carrying a camera around a lot of the time.  This movie was ok.  Possession/Exorcism movies have become rather stale and this one is a bit refreshing in not only having a male be the victim of possession instead of an innocent female, but also how the way the possession manifests makes you question at times if he's really possessed or just going crazy.

The Conspiracy: Two filmmakers set out to make a documentary about people who believe in conspiracy theories and end up getting roped into a dangerous secret society.  The first half of the movie does a great job dissecting just about every conspiracy theory out there.  Slowly, the  filmmakers, who started out as skeptics, begin piecing things together and make a pretty significant discovery.  Without trying to spoil anything, the movie then shifts to found footage format which is also done really well and is very sinister.  A very intelligent and well made film.

Long Pigs: Two young filmmakers make a film about a cannibalistic serial killer who agrees to let them follow him around and document his life.  If you can ignore the plausibility of a serial killer allowing his "work" to be filmed, this is actually a pretty good movie.  The serial killer himself is very well acted and very convincing.  Watching him slaughter, wrap, and store a human corpse in the same manner a hunter or butcher would slaughter, wrap and store a deer is something every fan of fine cinema should see.  The makeup and effects in these scenes are amazing.  Not for the fainthearted.

As Above, So Below: A super hot archaeologist goes to the Paris Catacombs to find a hidden chamber with an ancient relic only to find something much darker as well.  I loved this one because it was part Indiana Jones, part Blair Witch and successfully accomplished capturing the best of both genres. The film also touches on Dante's Inferno in more than one part which I liked.  The atmosphere is wonderful and does the job scaring the viewer.  One drawback here however, is that it suffers from Shaky Cam Syndrome that many found footage movies suffer.

It was excellent. I have seen thousands and thousands of horror movies in my 46 years and I would put this in the top 5 scariest movies I have ever seen.

My wife and I took our 11 year old to an afternoon showing. Nothing scares her. She has seen every horror flick out there and we had parent previewed it and saw zero sexual content. We went to a new theater and I had no idea I had paid to see this movie on their huge 80 foot screen. Now I had a couple beers with our lunch and this theater offers free refills and has about 7 of those soda machines where you can literally make 100 different drinks.. So I had a couple of my favorite diet drink combos.

I give those details as a warning to anyone that wants to go see this movie. It is long--really long--runtime is like 2 hours and 14 minutes. Tack on 20 minutes of previews and you have close to 3 hours of sitting ahead of you. Here is the rub, there are literally no wasted scenes or moments of lull. This movie is a roller coaster of terror that just doesn't stop. That is not a good thing when you have had two beers and 2 huge theater drinks!!! I look down at my phone and I can tell we are coming to the end and it is getting really tense. 80 foot screen. loud audio, bladder bursting and there is one huge jump scare scene and I was done--I look at my wife and I am like I have to go to the bathroom and I run out the theater and miss the last 3-4 minutes of the movie. :bag:  Not my proudest moment.

Do yourself a favor and see this movie (but use the restroom before you go in).

My 11 year old son is a horror maven like his parents. He loved it. He also loves Wan's other stuff (Insidious, Dead Silence, Saw). His all time fav is John Carpenters Halloween, so he has good taste lol.

We got to Halloween Horror Nights every year now with him (this upcoming one will be his 3rd straight). I highly suggest if your daughter loves horror as well to try and make a trip to Orlando to do that. They do a great job every year.

It appears the most peculiar mystery The Conjuring 2 has brought to the table is one that was unintentional. (Well, depending on your level of cynicism.)

The Times of India reports that a 65-year-old man at a Tiruvannamalai theater died of a heart attack during a screening of the popular horror film. Police say that the moviegoer complained of chest pains and fainted at the climax of the motion picture. Rushed to hospital, the man would ultimately be pronounced dead. Things took an even more unusual turn after that.

The man’s body was sent to the Tiruvannamalai Government Medical College Hospital for the postmortem, but the corpse never arrived at its destination. Both the cadaver and the person entrusted with transporting it have disappeared. Police are said to be on the lookout for the body and body driver with no reports of either being retrieved as of yet.

Finally watched The Babadook.

Meh. Over hyped and over rated. Not a bad film by any means, but not really that great IMO. And the little kid kills it for me. I want to kill him 20 minutes in....literally.

Anyway 2 out of 4 stars. Average at best.

Watched The Break-In last night.  A family moves into a new house in a neighborhood that has been plagued by robberies.  They start to notice strange things which lead them to believe their house will be next to be robbed.  It started out promising.  Some tense found footage moments throughout and it keeps you guessing.  The ending, however, was completely stupid, almost out of nowhere, and made the whole rest of the movie irrelevant.  There are more holes in the plot than in twenty pounds of swiss cheese.  I wouldn't bother.

We watched Sinister 2 last night.

Very meh sequel overall. Had some genuinely creepy moments. But pales in comparison to the excellent original with Ethan Hawke. Not worth a second watch at all.

That's a bummer. But I could tell from the trailers that it wasn't going to be as good as the first, which I loved.

While not really a horror move, The Shallows was an enjoyable little picture with plenty of tension once it got going.  3.75/5
