FFA Official Horror Movie Thread Catching up on Shudder and Various Streaming Platforms (8 Viewers)

Usually I am on board with horror movies that 'critics' seem to like, ie The Babadook and It Follows. I tried two last week that seemed to be highly reviewed - Spring and Kill List, and thought both were quite dull and didn't really like either. Oh well, I'll keep trying...

At the risk of sounding like my usual elitist self - Train To Busan is a thinking person's zombie movie. World War Z it is not so if tons of action is your thing you might be bored. It's even better if you are a parent.

Totally disagree.
The acting was actually quite good, you care for the characters, excellent high quality sequel with plenty of genuine terrifying scenes.

My gf and i watched it together. She fell asleep it was so cheesy. We turned it off about 80% through as were bored.

It's not everyones cup of tea.
For me James Wan is a modern day horror master. This basically had the same formula of the original in a different setting and circumstance.....so if you really enjoyed the first one...I don't know how this can be a miss for you.

First up
Honeymoon - Netflix - A newlywed couple honeymoons out in a wilderness cabin and the husband starts to notice subtle changes in his wife. I quite liked this movie. It's kind of like a good M.Night shyamalanaan movie in that it will have you trying to guess what exactly is going on. The ending is a bit ambiguous in ways, but still satisfying. The setting and overall tone are very unnerving and creepy throughout. I expect this to be in the top half of my rankings when this October thing is said and done.
Still deciding what to watch tonight.

Doesn't have the best reviews, but I thought it was very scary.
Not found footage but check out The Descent as well if you haven't seen it. One of my favorites of the last 15 years!

That'll be today's.
The Gallows - Amazon Video - 20 years after a gruesome accident during a school play, high school students put on the same play as a misguided tribute. I had heard good things about this one. It's found footage style and not a bad one at that. It plays out like a typical teen slasher film early on but has a better than decent twist at the end. A very fun movie overall. Fans of Scream will like this one.

Glad to see Grave Encounters getting some love. That movie really got to me. I hate old hospitals/insane asylums almost as much as I hate clowns.

I remember not really liking The Descent. I want to watch it again, because I think a lot had to do with my ####ty TV at the time. Got frustrated b/c I could barely see a damn thing and was more irritated than scared.

I found it just ok. Completely forgettable. Some people really seem to like it though so you may want to give it a shot.
Also on the topic of insane asylums, Session 9 is another pretty decent one.

I liked it and I liked the sequel as well. I can tell you however if I am stuck like they were and just going in circles, I am going out that one open window that they had the camera focussed on upstairs.Glad to see Grave Encounters getting some love. As long as we are bringing up suggestions, I am sure I have mentioned them once or twice before, but if anybody is looking for more stuff these are ones I liked:
The Loved Ones - part Prom Night, part TCM, all awesome
The Innkeepers and The House of the Devil - I really liked Ti West's style with these. Just had that creepy 70s throwback feel to them.

All viewed last night and today. I remember seeing Halloween for the first time ever in 1981 on Halloween night on network television (it had extra scenes which were cut from the theatrical version). I was living in Austin Texas and it was a rainy Halloween night. The movie scared the living crap out of me. Cool thing was I went to see Halloween II in the theater a week later so it was all so fresh and shocking. Both Halloween and Halloween II are two of my favorite horror/slasher films of all time. Of course the original still holds up well to this day. The suspense, the music, the utter terror. It still does it. Halloween II was not nearly as strong, but it has it's own personality and creep factor being in that dark, and empty hospital. Also **** Warlock was my favorite Myers ever. He was very liberal and plodding in his movements. And the kills were the best in the entire series.
Then I remember vividly seeing the trailer for Halloween III and all it entailed was the Witch's mask and a tarantula coming out of it's mouth.....and the title Halloween III Season of the Witch. No one had any clue it did not have anything to do with Michael Myers. The film was destroyed by word of mouth that Michael Myers had nothing to do with it and the critics went to town as well. I was disappointed as well because of the expectations of seeing Michael Myers again etc. But after viewing the film several more times it has become a charming cult classic. Carpenters vision for the Halloween series was to keep making "Halloween" films but totally different stories each time out. The studio pressured John about a follow up to Halloween as he never intended anymore Myers based films to be made after the original. But money always rules the roost of Hollywood. Halloween III was a really cool little movie if you go into it with an open mind. Think about how sinister and evil this guy Conal Cochran is. He literally wanted to kill hundreds of thousands of kids as one of the most sinister Halloween pranks of all time. Tom Atkins is excellent as the boozing beer drinking Doctor. Dan O'Herlihy is diabolical as the Shamrock mask maker. And Stacy Nelkin is a total hottie. Tommy Lee Wallace who worked with Carpenter on the original Halloween and several of his movies thereafter directs. The film is widely misunderstood. But it oozes a lot of classic Carpenter charm from the music, to the set pieces and it's twisted sense of humor.
If you are a Carpenter fan I think you will find some great qualities in Halloween III. It is a twisted horrific idea with some cool scenes and humor.

The Mist - Amazon Streaming - A mysterious Mist envelops a small Maine town and a bunch of Stephen King trope characters are trapped in a supermarket by the creatures that live inside the mist. There's two things I didn't like about the movie and I'll get them out of the way first. 1) How stupid and stubborn the characters were. First it was that one guy from Shawshank Redemption who just couldnt believe that the main character had heard a noise and got all uppity about it for no good reason. Then it was the neighbor who couldnt be bothered to go check out the back room and see what happened. He'd rather assume it was a joke and just ignore the fact that the one dude was covered in blood and all. I know they were pushing the concept of people turning on each other, but this was a bit forced. 2) The religious lady character. It seems most Stephen King stories have a character like this who is best described as a one-dimensional caricature. Very predictable and over-acted character. Despite all this, I really liked this movie. The creatures were very well done especially one towards the very end that I wont spoil but people who watched will know, and there was nothing ambiguous left after that brutal ending. That was a very ballsy way to end the movie and it was amazing.

If you haven't seen "The Collector" it is worth checking out (Amazon Prime). Basically its SAW set in someones house.
My wife cried at the end of The Mist. Then she hit me in the arm and asked me why I made her watch it. Brutal is a good word for it. I agree with you on the cgi creatures, very well done. I still have images and scenes from this movie course through my mind every now and then and I wonder what would I do.

I am about in line with you on this one. HATED her character, but overall liked the movie and loved that they did the ending the way they did, and that raised my rating a bit for it.
