FFA Official Horror Movie Thread Catching up on Shudder and Various Streaming Platforms (4 Viewers)

if any of you have Kodi, please install the One242415 addon ... it is teeming with horror, drive in, grindhouse, cult - most massive collection i've seen - developer is clearly a devotee of said genres, it's quite impressive.

 
I finally got around to watching The VVitch.  Critics were fawning over it, but I was pretty "meh" on it.  It was well shot, and I guess it's refreshing to see a horror movie that doesn't rely on constant screeching sounds and jump scares.  Basically, it's stuff that I usually say I think more horror movies should do, but it just didn't catch with me.  The end also rubbed me the wrong way. Would go out of my way to watch this one again.  4/10 for me.

Love the score of this movie more than the movie itself. I watched it again and enjoyed it more a second time, just not enough "punch" in this one for my taste.

I remember this listed here and I finally got around to watching it this past weekend.  Not sure what I was expecting, but this was an interesting movie to say the least.  Worth a watch IMO 3.5/5

Huge fan of Baskin. The visuals were absolutely fantastic. FYI "The Father" was not a makeup job

 
Devil's Candy - A decent movie with an excellent if not, the best soundtrack in a horror movie I've ever heard.  The movie has an interesting premise with very, very good characters and scenes, but lacked that certain something to make it great.  

The Blackcoat's Daughter - Another one that is decent but fell kind of flat for me, although it has a very creepy atmosphere about it.  One problem I had was that two of the three main actresses look very similar to each other and the movie is very dark (literally) so I didnt realize that they were separate characters until about a third of the way into it.  Still worth a watch if you're into slow burn paranormal stuff.  

Shin Godzilla - I don't know if Godzilla is considered horror but I enjoy a good monster romp and this 2016 reboot of the series is a decent one.  They managed to keep the cheesy, B-movie aspect with both the acting and special effects.  

The Void - Some sort of combination of Hellraiser and The Thing with a Lovercraftian vibe.  This is a solid if unspectacular flick.  I feel like they could've done more with it but it's still a decent watch. 

Don't Hang Up - A prank goes too far for two teenagers, when one of their victims enacts revenge.  I dont know if this was the effect the director was going for, but the two protagonists in this are some of the douchiest, unsympathetic a-holes to ever pass as protagonists, and you will find yourself actively rooting for the villain in this one.  Had some good tension along the way.

"We are who we are".  No bad, not great.   Acting very good.  Creepy, but not real scary.   Storyline good.

honestly havnt had a chance to look. ill hopefully try and find them tomm night or Friday and report back. ill be searching kodi if its not on there then umm.. the dark corners of the innerwebs

 
Ghostwatch - A reality/mockumentary about a haunted house that originally aired on BBC on Halloween night in 1992.  It was made to look like it was being presented live and as such, generated tens of thousands of irate and frantic phone calls to the BBC.  I can't believe I'd never seen or even heard of this until it showed up on Amazon.  It's a genuinely frightening found footage style ghost story which is rare.  Also has a pretty cool twist towards the end.  It's on Amazon and free if you have Shudder.

It's worth it IMO.  I've watched so much of what's in its library.  I'm sure there will come a point where I've seen everything and it's not worth it for just the new titles they put out each month, but I've been subscribed for months and still find new stuff.  

 
My wife is going to the Renaissance Fair or some #### like that in a few weeks. I'm gonna try to binge some of these when I have the house to myself.

Watched two of these.  

You Are Not Alone is pretty bad and not really worth a watch.  It's one of those movies where the first half is just complete unnecessary bull#### irrelevant to the plot.  Then when it actually turns into a horror movie halfway through, it just doesn't do anything new or interesting.  Just not very good at all.  

The Dark Tapes was better and probably worth a watch but does not live up to its hype.  It does have the best (if not cheesy at times) wrap around story of the recent crop of anthology horror movies, but the shorts themselves were just ok and not on par with some of the better shorts in the VHS movies for example.

I thought maybe it'd sit better with me after a day or two but no. I have no idea where the hype for that one came from.

I watched the Assembly Cut of Alien 3 recently and I think it warrants discussion.  

Alien 3 is a pretty contentious film and almost universally regarded as not living up to the first two films.  I feel the Assembly Cut changes this and is a much, much better film.  

The original Alien 3 was put together very sloppily. Filming began before the script was completed.  It was David Fincher's first feature film and the studio had no confidence in him.  This meant the awful final cut of the film was dictated primarily by the studio.  Apparently, Fincher remained so vehemently disgusted with his entire experience on Alien 3 as he was the only director of the franchise that refused to participate in Fox's release of the Alien Anthology set along with disowning the film itself.

The Assembly version is two and a half hours long, compared to the original cut which was just under two hours.  What gets added is much needed character development, and a complete re-structure of the first two acts' narrative.  The doctor and the inmates (the focus on the religion and struggles of the latter were awesome) have much more dialogue and personality than before which makes their teamwork, efforts, and ultimately their deaths against the Alien much more emotionally invested.  It feels much more like a proper Alien film with all the tension you'd want.

 
Them 2006:  Its pretty much the French version of Strangers. Also based on a true story. I thought it was decent and kept my attention.  3/5

Lucas and Clementine live peacefully in their isolated country house, but one night they wake up to strange noise... they're not alone... and a group of hooded assailants begin to terrorize them throughout the night.

Eden Lake 2008: British horror/thriller/action. Nothing scary about the movie imo. Michael Fassbender is in it :thumbup:  & this chick Kelly Reilly. Not really sure who she is but she's not bad to look at. Turns into a chase movie through the woods as she's trying to find help. 3/5

You Are Not Alone 2014 (amazon): This is a GoPro First Person stalker/slasher. I am not sure ive seen a film through the main characters POV. Makes it a bit of a thrill ride but the film gets very shaky at times. The main character makes some terrible decisions as usual. This movie was decent. 3/5

Natalie is a college graduate visiting her hometown over the 4th of July. The night she arrives, she is stalked by a sociopathic killer.

 
My problem with You Are Not Alone was that the first 2/3 of the movie are completely unnecessary and tedious. A lot of found footage falls into this trap. The whole main character POV thing was the only good thing about it, IMO.

Fender Bender - An ok slasher flick about a guy who picks his victims by getting into car accidents.  The movie doesn't do anything new or anything, just a decent, fun, but forgettable slasher flick.

Heidi - Surprisingly decent found footage movie that's a cross between Chucky and Paranormal Activity.  Two kids find a creepy doll in an attic that cause strange things to occur.
