FFA Official Horror Movie Thread Catching up on Shudder and Various Streaming Platforms (16 Viewers)

watched this Korean movie last night, thought it was pretty good. not really a horror movie, a lot of gore though

its like a mix between saw, no conutry for old men, and taken

I Saw the Devil

4/5

Two decent movies that touch on current social issues.

Savage Lands - Amazon Prime - Mockumentary about the disappearance of all of the residents of a small town on the US/Mexico border, except for one photo-taking illegal immigrant who gets blamed for their murders.  Very well-made film and the photos the main dude took are some of the creepiest images in horror.  The movie is a great anti-Trump wall metaphor.

Shuttle - Amazon - Two women come back from a tropical vacation and get kidnapped while taking a shuttle home from the airport.  Starts out as a fairly standard kidnapping/hostage film, then it takes a very, very dark turn when you realize what is going on.  Will make you think.

I am intrigued.

Another Zombie-ish movie I just caught on Netflix called "Here Alone".  Follows just a few people out in the woods.  I thought it was a pretty decent movie that probably had almost no budget.  I say Zombie-ish cause it's more the 28 Days Later types.  There isn't a lot of on screen zombie activity as it's mostly character interactions and flashbacks, but I thought this one was decent.

Another decent watch if you are struggling to find new zombie flicks.

Two recent gems.  Both are Amazon Prime I believe

Wake Wood - A family loses their child to a savage dog attack, but are given the opportunity to spend three final days with her.  I always like seeing new ideas in horror and this fits the bill and has a great style to it.  The movie gives off vibes from The Omen.  It is intensely graphic in some parts.  The little girl is a very good child actor as she really sells the part.

The House at the End of Time - A mother returns to her home after being imprisoned for 30 years for killing her family.  A Venezualan film that is more of a paranormal mystery/thriller than it is a scary horror movie.  It's a bit of a mind bender in that regard, but the characters and the film's resolution are great.  Very well made.

Watch this and "Ouija: Origin of Evil" this weekend. "Here Alone" was far superior.

The Taking of Deborah Logan

I know someone in here mentioned this movie because I added it to my list and this is where most of my recommendations come from.  I liked that it starts out as something and ends as something else.  It was interesting overall, but sort of predictable in the 2nd half.  3.5/5

The Linda Vista Project

Watching this right now as I type this so it's obviously not holding my attention.  Bad acting (although great "scenery") and effects ripped off from Lost (Smoke Monster).  Oof!  2/5

You're being generous giving it 2.  I thought it was utterly awful.  Porno level acting, horrible story, etc.

The "Leatherface" (TCM prequel) - trailer came out today and I am pretty stoked for it. I would link it but its a red band trailer and with the new rules...

Ive got a post in this thread somewhere, idk if its about The Void or not, but it was recently added to Netflix and couldn't recommend it more.

Its a lovecraftian horror thriller, not on the level of In The Mouth of Madness but still very good imo.

Its got a lot of body horror and the digital effects look very good.

Loved the first 2/3 and then last 1/3 of it totally lost me.

Saw it and I am in. Looks like it will be a true well made reboot. Also looks to take place in the early 60’s judging by the cars.

Wife and son and I watched Insidious last night on a whim. Still one of the scariest horror films ever made.

James Wan is seriously great. Love his stuff.

watched The Void and liked it, have not seen The Mouth of Madness but have added to it to my watch list on Hulu.

Found a random gem on Shudder called The Battery.  It's about two guys travelling amidst a zombie outbreak who rely on each other for survival.  It's really well written with a great ending.  It was supposedly made for less than $6K and what they were able to make out of that is truly spectacular.

I tried watching The Conjuring 2 last night. Got bored 2/3 way through and turned it off.

I would agree with this point. Loved the set up, had this Carpenter 'The Thing" vibe and then it all went to heck there and got weird. This was a movie that could have been great had they just kept it simple.
I liked the 2nd half, not as much as the buildup which was on point. It really reminded me of Call of Cthulu with how the 2nd half played out.

If you guys like lovecraftian mythos, there used to be a movie on Netflix called "Banshee Chapter", dont worry has nothing to do with ghosts. Its loosely based on Lovecraft's From Beyond short story.

The Dead Room - Netflix - A trio of paranormal investigators investigate a haunted house.  This movie proves that you don't need to be terribly original or have a complex plot to be good.  The movie has only one set, three actors and one simple plot, the investigation of a haunted house.  While not original, it executes this simple concept incredibly well.  I especially liked the skeptical scientist character.  The pacing, sound effects and camera work are all spot on, and the spirit they are investigating is very creepy as a result.  The ending is done well and even has a bit of a twist.  Highly recommended.

Watching Jennifer Love Hugetits in I Know What You Did Last Summer and was thinking if there have been any good recent slasher movies. Any suggestions?

i'm confused. are there 2 coming out? i saw this one:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y5Ec5s2StCc

and this one:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-6ZX48JkM_Y

2 different movies right? is one just a foreign version of the movie, or is it one of those situations where you have "Leatherface" and "The Leatherface"

complete side note, i get so pissed every time this movie called "28 days" comes on cause i think it is "28 days later" i turn it on at least 75% of the time, and every time i am like

watched a few movies recently

Phoenix Forgotten   5/10       Found footage UFO movie   Not sure if I finished this one or not I think I passed out towards the end.

"20 years after three teenagers disappeared in the wake of mysterious lights appearing above Phoenix, Arizona, unseen footage from that night has been discovered, chronicling the final hours of their fateful expedition."

Conspiracy    6.5/10    I thought this one was pretty decent and well put together

"A documentary about conspiracy theories takes a horrific turn after the filmmakers uncover an ancient and dangerous secret society."

Killing Ground   6.5/10  Another good one I didn't get bored with, worth checking out.  Australian camping horror / thriller

"A couples' camping trip turns into a frightening ordeal when they stumble across the scene of a horrific crime."

Had a bunch of time working from home so I was able to watch all of these in order. Cant go wrong with any of these if you are an Alien fan. the backstory the first two provide is pretty good stuff.

Covenant

Prometheus

Alien

Aliens

Saw Anabelle Creation--solid flick. Starts a little slow but when it gets going. It doesn't stop. Wraps up the whole storyline very nicely. Two cut-scene moments during the credits FYI.

We also saw the other day--Phoenix Forgotten. I liked it. Kind of interesting the way they intertwined true events and fictional ones. Good Redbox rental movie

The Monster Project - Amazon Rental - A fairly hyped Kickstarter-funded film that carries on the story of a popular youtube series.  It's about a duo of young filmmakers trying to make it big by making a documentary about real monsters.  It's hard to review this movie because there are things it does well and there are things it does very, very badly.  First of all, it's found footage and one of the cardinal rules of found footage is to have a believable reason for the cameras to be on.  For the most part, the film does ok with this, except for one laughable part where someone's camera records his own dream sequence.  There's also a very annoying comic relief character.  That said, once the action gets going, it's not bad and there's even a twist ending to boot.  If you dont like found footage, you probably wont like this one, but I think it's worth a view.

Anabelle Creation was good, I agree with everything @Courtjester posted.  Plus I jumped a few times as well.  That damn doll was creepy as hell.

The Collector and its sequel The Collection are pretty great.  The premise is basically like Home Alone meets the slasher genre.  The killer sets up these elaborate and incredibly sadistic traps and that's before he catches you and tortures you.  The gore is simply on another level from your typical slasher movie and the killer is creepy as ####.

I liked the first one better than the second mainly because the home invasion aspect of the story really heightened the tension, and the second one's plot gets a little wacky but both are worth a watch if you're a sadistic #### like me.  .

Saw "It" over this past weekend.

Absolute gold. 4/5 stars.

A bang up job by Pennywise and all the kids. Probably one the very best King novel adaptions ever made easily. We are very much looking forward to Chapter 2.

I agree.  Very well done.  The few nitpicks I have did not diminish my overall enjoyment.

excited that DirecTV now offers Chiller with normal package. Watched "I Saw the Devil". Slight downgrade because it has subtitles, and apologies if it has been mentioned before, but really is one of the better Horror movies i have seen in some time

ETA: ok may have been little lazy. saw it mentioned a few times

  Thanks for the heads up! Is this just for October or a permanent thing?

I've had I Saw the Devil on my netflix queue forever and never got around to watching it.

eta: are the movies on Chiller unedited? Commercials?

There are commercials and edited a bit but the edits weren’t distracting. I’m hoping permanent, but don’t know

i'm happy with their library so far too. i mean quite a few i wouldn't put as top 10 horror movies, but it's nice turning on and having a horror movie to watch. looking at my DVR here are some recent one's i watched that were ok:

Old 37 - kind of toned down Texas Chainsaw Massacre

The Boy - thought it would be better, more of a psych thriller

they have some goof horror comedies too. i didn't watch it yet but Grabbers is about some Irish guys surviving Alien invasion by having to stay drunk.
