currently making the streaming rounds, well worth the sit.
picture a mashup of TCM, Boogie Nights, Psycho, Motel Hell ... all paid homage to here, a pastiche of styles and vibes that really clicks - i don't wanna divulge too many spoilers, but - if you buy the premise from jump, you're in for one hell of a gory, bloody, sexuhhh romp.
it's 1979, and sleazebag producer Wayne has assembled a crew to go shoot a video nasty on the grounds of an old couple's Texas spread - the opening 15 minutes or so pay sweet callback to TCM in any number of ways ... those who are huge fans of the '74 original will appreciate this aspect.
it gets creepier as they get closer to the site, then it ramps up bigly, and ya just know that there is no way in hell this is gonna end well for our kamikaze porn purveyors.
the cast is really fantastic ... spearheaded by the luscious triumvirate of Brittany Snow, Mia Goth, and blossoming scream queen Jenna Ortega - they absolutely carry this flick the whole way, though Martin Henderson as Wayne is pretty memorable himself, in a kinda Saul Goodman/Jack Horner hybrid turn.
there are some eerie underlying themes touched on here ... it gets pretty uncomfortable, mostly for Maxine (Mia Goth) - when you get to the part(s) i'm referencing, you'll immediately think CRINGE, but then you'll begin to appreciate them for the genius horror conveyed through the message.
the kills are well done, nothing earth shattering here, but you will dig the methods - it takes a bit to get humming, but once the blood starts getting shed it begins to pick up to a more frenzied pace.
there are a few twists that are worth hanging around for - and i think they work very well given the storyline.
i'll give this an 8 outta 10, only dinging slightly because it is a slow burn, but the cast more than occupy your attention as you await the good stuff ... and there's plenty of it.
highly recommended
