FFA Official Horror Movie Thread Catching up on Shudder and Various Streaming Platforms (4 Viewers)

Martyrs was a buncha hype for what turned out to be a very pedestrian, wannabe snuff (WITH MEANING!!!1!1) knockoff.

i got the premise, and the complete nihilism of the entire journey to the "message", so to speak - don't wanna dance around the reveal, so that's where i'll leave it.

pretty boring, frankly.

Couldnt disagree more.  I think its one of the best ambiguous endings I've seen.  Dontt want to spoil so I'll leave it there.

ok. cool.

but i didn't critique the end at all ... just the snoozefest leading up to it.

hopefully you'll see that if you check my post again.

I never saw this movie back in 1989 when it came out nor did I ever hear of it until now. It sure is weird. 2/5

Not sure how you get snoozefest from Martyrs, but we don't agree much on movies so I guess it tracks.

i'll try my best not to divulge spoilers too much by saying: once the plot was established, the monotony of the journey to the punch line grew tedious.

better?

i mean, it's not like i deemed myself arbiter of "Best Horror of the Aughts" and didn't even bother to watch it, amirite?

:bye:

Yeah, that was my goal and tone of the 90s countdown.

Under the Shadow

Persian language movie about a bomb hitting an apartment building in Iran during the Iran-Iraq war and unleashing a ghost/spirit/poltergeist. Interesting film and better than I expected. 3.75/5

Hereditary is the best horror movie of all time. My top 5:

1. Hereditary

2. Cabin In The Woods

3. The Descent

4. It Follows

5. Sinister

My almost 13 year old son LOVES horror movies

We've watched a ton together. Some R rated. Although I accidentally let him watch Hereditary having no idea what it was about lmao.

currently making the streaming rounds, well worth the sit.

picture a mashup of TCM, Boogie Nights, Psycho, Motel Hell ... all paid homage to here, a pastiche of styles and vibes that really clicks - i don't wanna divulge too many spoilers, but - if you buy the premise from jump, you're in for one hell of a gory, bloody, sexuhhh romp.

it's 1979, and sleazebag producer Wayne has assembled a crew to go shoot a video nasty on the grounds of an old couple's Texas spread - the opening 15 minutes or so pay sweet callback to TCM in any number of ways ... those who are huge fans of the '74 original will appreciate this aspect.

it gets creepier as they get closer to the site, then it ramps up bigly, and ya just know that there is no way in hell this is gonna end well for our kamikaze porn purveyors.

the cast is really fantastic ... spearheaded by the luscious triumvirate of Brittany Snow, Mia Goth, and blossoming scream queen Jenna Ortega - they absolutely carry this flick the whole way, though Martin Henderson as Wayne is pretty memorable himself, in a kinda Saul Goodman/Jack Horner hybrid turn.

there are some eerie underlying themes touched on here ... it gets pretty uncomfortable, mostly for Maxine (Mia Goth) - when you get to the part(s) i'm referencing, you'll immediately think CRINGE, but then you'll begin to appreciate them for the genius horror conveyed through the message.

the kills are well done, nothing earth shattering here, but you will dig the methods - it takes a bit to get humming, but once the blood starts getting shed it begins to pick up to a more frenzied pace.

there are a few twists that are worth hanging around for - and i think they work very well given the storyline.

i'll give this an 8 outta 10, only dinging slightly because it is a slow burn, but the cast more than occupy your attention as you await the good stuff ... and there's plenty of it.

highly recommended 🪓🔱

Good review. According to Wikipedia a prequel called Pearl has already been filmed.

nice - this A24 production house seems to really have a flair for stylized forays into the genre ... the cinematography and set design all blended in perfectly with the music & wardrobe to really nail that late 70s ambiance.

- and let's just say Pearl definitely deserves a backstory flesh out ... and i'll leave it at that.

Where can we stream this? Shudder? Netflix? Amazon?

The Old Ways

It’s a slow burn demonic possession movie that takes place in the Mexican jungle. Way better than I expected. 4/5

Terrified

Paranormal activity in a Buenos Aires neighborhood leads to further investigation. Creepy af imo. Subtitles might bother some folks.

3.75/5

Saw this last October.  Very good

Satanic Panic

Rich white devil worshippers plan to use a pizza delivery person to spawn satan’s child. It doesn’t take itself too seriously and it has funny moments. 3/5

Unsheltered

Slasher film (or is it) that takes place pre-hurricane Irma in Florida (yay). Another pos for the pile. 1/5.

You Won't Be Alone. Not really scary or traditional horror but an interesting take on being a witch.

A girl who is transformed into a witch in a specific way that I don't think I've heard of before, and tries to figure things out for herself. The language is Macedonian so there are subtitles. Streaming on Peacock.

 I enjoyed this one.

Watched two over the weekend:

The Black Phone: Liked how it started, but didn't care for how it ended. A lot of things left unanswered. Made no sense.

X: I can see why this is getting a lot of love. Some really creepy moments.

Watched Sweetheart on Netflix last night. Short (under an hour and a half) and well done minimalistic creature feature. Basically woman trapped on island where something comes out at night to stalk her. I enjoyed it, especially the first 40 minutes or so as it builds.

Saw a lot of praise on Reddit for Incantation on Netflix, so I checked it out last night.  FAIR WARNING: It's a Taiwanese movie, but Netflix does have a dubbed option. It's a found footage type of movie about a mother trying to help her young daughter.  Saying anything else might delve into spoiler territory.

It takes place in the present and the past, and jumps back and forth frequently, so it's a movie you definitely want to pay attention to lest you miss an important plot point.

All that said, I found myself transfixed after the first 30 minutes or so.  Some good jump scares and a really cool story that contains some "viewer interaction". (That will make sense if you watch it).

Solid flick and recommended.  Get through the first half and enjoy the ride. 4/5

Black Phone was awesome. We bought it from Xfinity. Loved the throwback feel and having it set in Denver was really cool. It had a complete Sinister feel to it--cast included with Hawke and Ransone. It just shows a great horror movie doesn't have to be gory to be scary.

Watched Butterfly Kisses last night on Amazon Prime. It is a found footage horror, urban legend movie but with a really interesting twist. It is about a box of found video tapes that show a group of two college film makers trying to investigate an urban legend of this creature. The film also centers around the film director who found the tapes and his efforts to make a movie from the tapes and then the group he hires to film his attempts to make it  So it is like a multi-layered onion of things going on and nothing like I have seen from a found footage movie. We enjoyed it a lot. It doesn't have many reviews--but it is sitting at a 100% at RT.

A Dark Song

Slow burn movie about a woman trying to connect to her dead son with the help of an occultist. I liked it. 3.5/5

The Black Phone was outstanding!!! I don’t want to say anymore and spoil it for anyone. Just know it is a great flick.

Two crappy follow up movies to his break out hit Get Out.

One hit wonder.

I wouldn't say that.  It was a beautiful film with lots of metaphor and meaning.  It just suffers from over hypeness.  In contrast I thought it was LEVELS above Black Phone l, but that movie was also very meh to me.

We have our opinions…..Just Us was god awful.  And the buzz of No Way has been brutal.

But if you enjoy it and like his style….that’s cool. But you felt it was meh as well.

I loved Get Out and thought it was fantastic.

The Black Phone hit all the right spots for me personally. It obviously did not for you.

Sea Fever

Irish Fishing boat encounters crazy deep sea animal/monster and the crew becomes infected with some virus/spawn. Definitely an interesting take on the whole virus genre. 3.75/5
