FFA Official Horror Movie Thread Catching up on Shudder and Various Streaming Platforms (4 Viewers)

I didn't realize that Weapons is from the same director as Barbarian, which I really didn't like. Weapons is the much better of the two, imo.
I am starting to realize I am in the minority and take the other side. Weapons didn't scare me, make me laugh as hard, or surprise me as much as Barbarian did. Both tailed off at the end, but IMO Barbarian was the better ride up to that point. On second viewing I didn't like Weapons telling the same story with multiple POVs quite as much.

Last night I rewatched the movie that probably kicked off my horror love the most - A Nightmare On Elm Street. I cancelled our HBO again, and didn't see many options for horror on there at the beginning of the month, but now I am debating ripping through that series before it officially goes away in a few weeks.

Tailed off at the end? Weapons has one of the best movie endings in years!

I wasn't a fan of the very end. I thought it was a bit silly. I understand the laughs it was going for, but it didn't hit with me personally. I also wasn't a huge fan of the main actress.

As you said above - to each their own. Im still baffled Eddington didn't get a fraction of the love movies like Weapons and One Battle did this year either, so what do I know.

If Hocus Pocus counts as horror, I had the pleasure of watching that today and hating near every minute of that experience. 1 point for Stephanie Faracy in the Madonna costume, though.
I will be watching it sometime this week because my wife does not do horror at all. She can't even stomach a horror movie commercial on TV. So Hocus Pocus is what we got left to watch for Halloween. It's better than Halloweentown at least. I am not always a Sarah Jessica Parker fan but her as that dumb slutty witch does it for me.

Agreed. Weapons left me leaving the theatre grinning from ear to ear with how good and messed up it was. Which is rare for a movie to do.

Ok yeah we saw the movie very very differently then. I am still waiting for Eddington to stream so I can see it.

30 minutes into Halloween H20 and it's already 20x better than that last previous Curse of Michael Myers mess. Having JLC and some decent actors around this makes such a difference. And ignoring the mess 4,5 and 6 got the franchise into

The Long Walk - Stephen King adaptation. This is classified as horror, but I feel like it barely qualifies. I liked it. It's some combination of Squid Game and Shawshank in tone. I feel like it was going for the feels and character depth of Shawshank, but it doesn't quite get there. Grade: B

Best 2 Halloween timelines are:

Halloween
Halloween 2
Halloween 4
Halloween 5
Halloween 6 Producers Cut

Halloween
Halloween 2018
Halloween Kills
Halloween Ends (which is weak)

H2O aged horribly. It’s Dawsons Creek/CW Horror. And Halloween Resurrection is literally a comedy for me.

I love Zombies 2007 film
And loathe his 2009 sequel.

Halloween 3 is a cult classic and I love it as a stand alone horror movie.

This year we have dug into more classics than any year prior.

Frankenstein
Dracula
The Wolfman
Bride of Frankenstein
Son of Frankenstein

Also watched several Vincent Price classics like

House on Haunted Hill
Wax Museum
The Haunted Palace
House of Usher
The Pit and the Pendulum
The Masque of Red Death
The Last Man on Earth

Here are others we have watched this month:

The Conjuring 4 Last Rites (in the theater) - great finale to the series and a huge bounce back from ho hum part 3.

The Black Phone
The Fog
Nightmare on Elm Street
Nightmare on Elm Street 3
The Shining
The Exorcist
Rosemarys Baby
The Sentinal
Terrifier
Terrifier 2
Halloween
Halloween 2
Halloween 3
Halloween 4
Insidious
A Quiet Place

Have lots in the que for this week.

Dangerous Animals sounds terrible based solely on a 2 sentence summary
I wasn't expecting a masterpiece, I mostly had it queued for a dumb mindless night for the month. It was getting bumped down the list, but I was more interested after seeing the tie-in to the director of The Loved Ones. It wouldn't have been terrible if there was a few more kills and/or the method with serial killer wasn't exactly the same each time. It just dragged in the end.

I should have gone with my gut and rewatched Piranha 3D or Lake Placid, but I just HAD to watch a new one. I was thinking about possible fun ideas for the ANIMALS category of the all-nighter theme I posted a bit ago. I was thinking Piranha 3D (AMC+) or Monkey Shines (Prime). Those are probably my next rewatches.
You gotta go with Alligator then. It’s hilarious. I recently watched Rogue (crocodile). Not a half bad watch imo
I'm sure it's better than Piranhaconda
wow this is real...and it's got Michael Madsen in it
I told you

Aged like **** H20

4 and 5 were fun movies.

Especially 4 which feels like a real Halloween movie.

5 is a comedy for me with Tttt Tina! And Dr Loomis over the top performance.

6 non producers cut is garbage.

I liked H20 (relatively speaking)). Maybe because that was my era, I was 16 when it came out.

I love his movies so much, no matter how bad or schlocky, they nearly always entertain me. House of Usher and Witchfinder General were my new Price watches this year that made a big impression.

Just finished Weapons. Kinda disappointed. It was ok but expected more from all the rave reviews. Almost saw it in the theaters and now glad I didn't. Wasn't scary at all but I didn't hate it. Doubt I'd ever watch it again.
To each their own but I think you probably would have liked to more in the theater. There were several moments that got huge audience reactions which I think enhances the scary and funny parts of the movie. If nothing else it’s the funniest horror movie I’ve seen in a bit.
I saw it a few weeks ago, I was also underwhelmed.

See guys, I told you it was really good

That makes sense.

4 and 5 were when I was 18 and 19.

H2O is still a good watch but I cringe at the soundtrack and some of the characters.

LL was great though.

Remember, my theater was fairly empty too. On second watch, I also realized that I was laughing a little more at the reactions from the crowd than I was the movie itself, since my wife and I weren't laughing too much. I am also probably coming off like I didn't like it overall, which definitely isn't the case. If Barbarian was a 9/10 for me, Weapons was a 7.5/10.

Eddington is coming to HBOMax on 11/14. I am looking forward to all the negative reviews. I am guessing I will be in the minority on that one too . It seems I liked that one much more than the masses, and liked Sinners, Weapons, and One Battle a bit less.

I would currently rate them:

Eddington 8.5/10
Weapons 7.5/10

Sinners 6/10
One Battle 5/10

I can only imagine the kind of silliness you would find if you go skimming through the late career of Michael Madsen.

I thought about rewatching Relic for Madsen, but realized that was Sizemore and not him. I think Species was Madsen, so maybe I could throw that in the mix sometime.

My queue is gigantic now - we might have to start a monthly horror movie club so I can keep up with all my themes and ideas I have written down. ;)

Instead of Hocus Pocus today, my wife and I decided to go a little fantasy with Labyrinth. Neither had seen it since we were little kids. I love Henson, the Muppets, Connelly and Bowie but I am sad to report I am disappointed.

Maybe switch to Pan’s Labyrinth
Great movie but maybe a touch too dark for my wife

The Dark Crystal.
That’s a good suggestion. Maybe we will try that later this week.

Underrated fantasy pivot: Stardust (2007)

Similar feel to Pan's for horror month: Tigers Are Not Afraid (2017)

Ah yes…a young Daredevil

This is how I felt as well - I think it had been built up too much. It was fine.

Peeping Tom I picked up Criterion 4k release somewhat recently during a sale. Michael Powell movies always look incredible on these Criterion discs with the bold colors popping off the screen. They don't ligjht movies this like anymore. But amidst the bold blues and ravishing reds, this movie is sick. Even sicker than some of the murders is the home footage of his father abusing him. It's such a big step forward in horror. 1960 was a really pivotal year IMO- perhaps the beginning of modern horror with Peeping Tom, Psycho and Eyes without a Face. Throw in Bloody Sunday and Jigoku too. It's a huge jump forward from 1959 which is dominated by William Castle stuff like House on Haunted Hill and The Tingler or Hammer's The Mummy. Those are good, fun movies but not genuinely scary or creeopy in any way for a modern audience.

Oh man, there are definitely scenes from Nightmare 2 i didn't remember.
One of these years I need to rewatch those movies. I have no recollection of anything from that series except 1,3 and New Nighmare. I know I’ve seen most of the others but I feel like as a kid I would just randomly see them on TV or randomly rent them and never knew exactly which one I was watching.

I have actually seen Piranhaconda (albeit not at the theater so no 3D). It's worse than it sounds.

There is a Netflix doc onthe lead star from Nightmare 2 and what he went thru. Really insightful actually.

I remember being 15 years old (1985) seeing this in the theater......and my buddies and I were like...WTF man. LOL yeah fun times.

Shower scene? I can’t recall much though other than if sucking
That was one of a few. There were some wild choices in this one. I think it still has to be better than 5, 6, and the remake.
Yes it has dare I say some redeeming qualities compared to 5 and the absolute crapfest known as 6.

I actually don't think the remake is that bad.....I mean it has much higher production quality then 6. I simply do not ever watch Freddy's Dead. It is that bad. I still stomach Dream Child.....but only in the month of OCtober....one time LOL.
