Ended the month with a banger! The Substance was a wild ride...what a crazy movie.

I had to tap out from the Nightmare movies after 4 1/2. I couldn't bring myself to attempt Part 6.

Double Feature tonight, could use a lil' help deciding:

Alien / The Thing (favorite all time sci-fi horror DF but almost boring at this point been done so many times)

2
World War Z / Cloverfield (PG-13 sci-fi horror, I like both far more than their reviews)

American Werewolf in London / Bram Stoker's Dracula (been a long time with either of these)

4
The Ritual (Netflix) / Apostle (Folk horror, love The Ritual)

5
Texas Chainsaw Massacre / X (slasher, TCM messed me up more than any other film as a kid)

Anyone have a preference?

1 - I agree in that I dont feel like I need to rewatch these.
2 - World War Z is underrated. Cloverfield is good but I liked the sequel better.
3 - There are a few Dracula movies I'd watch over Bram Stoker's.
4 - I like folk horror, but these aren't my favorites. I'd put things like The Medium, The Wailing, Wicker Man, or Midsommar over these.
5 - TCM is always good fun. This is pretty good as a double feature.

Of those, I'd rank them 2, 5, 1, 3, 4 in terms what I feel like watching.

I would have swapped out WWZ for Overlord and gone with Cloverfied/Overlord. Or maybe Cloverfield/[REC] for maximum shakycam.

When Evil Lurks - Argentinian horror from the same director as Terrified. Enjoyed this one a lot, pretty bonkers story about possession/demons, solid gore. Becoming a fan of this director.

Ghostwatch (1992) is another one I had been skipping over because of the cover picture looking really cheesy. After a couple mentions on podcasts, I gave it a go last night and I am glad I did. What a fun movie. This one is a mock British show investigating the experiences of a family in a haunted house. It was shown "live" on BBC and caused many people to freak out. It is a bit slow at times, but that adds to the realism of story of it being live, as does blending real British news personalities with actors. They also took care to do things like using the same cameras the different crews would be using so it looked less like a polished movie. They put a lot of thought and care into this and it showed. One of my favorite watches of the month. 8.5/10 This was another that showed up on AMC+/shudder.

Really liked it. It had been a while for me too, so I forgot some things. Might be underrated, even on my list

The Black Phone (Peacock), IMDB rating 6.9. This was much better than I expected - I didn't look up the rating until the movie was over, but it lived up to that rating, I thought. There's a really crappy version of this movie that we typically end up with, but the sister and phone added the right amount of depth to make me unsure of what was going to happen.

Except when the police are going into a house at the climax moment. Everyone knows it's always the wrong house - we all saw Silence of the Lambs.

Going way back in time for my 31st Shocktober film. 1920's Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde starring John Barrymore- who absolutely kills it. I like the Spencer Tracey version. I really like the Frederic March film but this is the goat IMO. The story fits just right into a silent movie, it is appropriatly eeire and the fx hold up nicely. 105 years old and still a very good Halloween watch. Far from perfect and certainly not as invetive or unqiue as some of the best silent horros but this still worth seeing for those who an interest.

Where is this streaming?

Looks like maybe Prime or Tubi but I actually have the blu ray. I think I picked up earlier this year on a Kino Lorber sale where it was like $5 orn $10. I realize it is a somewhat wasteful and pointless hobby but I do enjoying building out a broad movie library. I am nearing 600 movies.

There are some negatives to the movie. The print does need restoration work. The direction is pretty pedestrian. Barrymore is just so good and is less Universal monster, more human monster.

Ironically, I just found that I DVRed this from TCM in May. I'm taking a brief reprieve from horror but will probably check it out around the end of the month
