The show as a whole doesn’t really hold up as an all-time great, but the opening scene to Disney’s The Lion King remains one of the most magical moments I’ve ever witnessed on stage.

Also, do choral symphonies qualify here?  If that’s the case, after years of movie watching, I’m ready to charge the front line of battle anytime Orff’s Carmina Burana is heard (even more so if seen live)

I think opera and choral works are probably a different category- but I don't mind them being discussed. It's not like there is an overwhelming amount of chatter in a football message board about musicals. Maybe I should have gone Tim style and posted 1 a week.

I also really like The Umbrellas of Cherbourg. It's gorgeous to look at (and so is a young Catherine Deneuve). The cool thing is the entire movie is singing. There is no traditional dialogue. And it is in French but it all works perfectly. It was a massive influence on La La Land.

saw lion king recently on stage with the kids... it holds up really well. julie taymor's puppety look for things may have gotten a bit played out over the years- but that one is still stunning.

we were just talking about Excalibur somewhere... only part I remember holding up well was the Orff.

another similar, kinda-sorta, is missa luba, which I think I first heard in that crazy english mod/revolt movie, If.

eta: another recent interesting good, albeit not great, musical- Fun Home.

the one about the 9/11 diverted passengers- far away home (I think)- is also supposed to be fantastic.

Intermission at Moulin Rouge.

Amazing staging and performances. I forgot I never really liked Laz Berman or the movie lol.

But floppinha is enjoying it, so I'm enjoying it.

I really loved the movie, I think it’s coming here soon I will probably grab tickets for me and the wife I just don’t know what day yet

I have tickets for The Book of Mormon next week. Loved Avenue Q, so after reading this thread, I’m even more optimistic.
It's a fun show.

I have a Mormon client, so feel bad about laughing at it.

I much preferred Ave Q, tbh.. I remember being in tears watching that. Lots of titters while watching Mormon.

I'd love to take my kids to Ave Q... Have to see if it's back or coming back to NYC.

Even though I didn't love the movie, the staging and flow of the show works really well- makes it worth watching, even if the pop song mashups aren't your thing.

The cast we had was like a Broadway all-star group... Incredible seeing them

I've been wanting to see Stereophonic, with music by Will Butler. Had a chance when it opened and before it got buzzy... Now, less likely

I saw it the week it opened. Really enjoyed it. Not exactly a musical (I think there are six songs, and some are just partial).

I enjoyed Hadestown when it was touring.

Anais Mitchell is a very talented songwriter; the latest Bonny Light Horseman album is one of my AOTYs.

Wife and son saw this a bit ago... Right before some of the original cast left. They loved it.

Wait a sec... How come I'm not seeing any of these?!

My family sees a ton of musicals and I somehow missed this thread the first go-round. I always tell people these are my favorites:
  • For music = Les Misérables
  • For story = Wicked - This one blew me away when I first saw it on stage. Stoked to see the movie version next month.
  • Honorable Mention = Hamilton

First show on Broadway- Les Miserables- caught the musical theater bug big time at the age of 16.

Last Show: Hadestown- back in August on Broadway. Went in blind. Came out an absolute fan.

Shows I've Been In: Grease and Little Shop of Horrors.

Show I Never Got To Do: A Funny Thing Happened on the Way To the Forum

Honorable Mention: Hedwig and the Angry Inch

Jersey Boys - Just saw this for the first time here in Austin. Not like a huge Frankie Valli fan or anything but it was really fun. I recommend it for a fun time on a Friday night.

We got tickets to see Hamilton again, with Leslie Odom Jr returning.

I'm hoping some of the rest of the cast comes back too, but we'll have to wait for it.... wait for it.

I saw Hamilton live for the first time last week in London.

I saw the recorded version a few years ago, with the original cast. They were great but seeing it in person was so much better.

Nice! Did they laugh at King George the way us Yanks do?

I went in blind the first time- knew nothing about any of it, even though the wife and kids were already listening to all of it; every NYC elementary and middle school kid knew those songs. I was blown away... Such an amazing production and some epic songs- especially Wait for it. We saw it here not long after the original cast left, so I'm excited see Odom Jr. Nosebleed seats with my legs turned sideways because no leg room will be rectified a bit with side orchestra I hope... And about a quarter what we paid per ticket.

I have tickets to see Redwood in NYC on August 1st. For twenty years my wife has held it over my head she got to see Idina Menzel in Wicked along with the rest of the Broadway cast. Now is my chance to finally see Idina. I am there for three days so might catch another show one of the nights. Speaking of Wicked, I did an interview with a few of the ensemble members last month. I'll post the link HERE

im not gonna lie i am not a musical guy but i do love my neighbors kids so my faovrite musical is whatever they are in for their schools and i will go see whatever that is every night they put it on take that to the bank brohans

good friends from CA were just in town and saw it. thought it was fantastic- they're from the land of the redwoods, and their post grad daughter knew somebody in the cast from her college, so lots of additional connections. and of course idina!

she was a parent at our kids' preschool and for their spring benefit would offer a private singing lesson (went for 10k+ every year!). I never got to meet her unfortunately. We also had a Rock of Ages actor there too... he got the cast to perform at one of the benefits. kids rubbing shoulders with their kids- one of the benefits of raising kids in NYC (along with all the cultural opportunities, noise and subway rats).

I lied in a post earlier this week. I will not be seeing Idina Menzel in Wicked as they announced the closure of her show. I used my refund credit to book a ticket for Maybe, Happy Ending. 10 Tony Nominations. We shall see.

my son saw that recently... with Darren Chris? my son loved it.

speaking of- he's basically done with HS. his school has the seniors do "senior initiative", which is a last 6 weeks of school independent project of their choosing, that they can do from home or anywhere.

he's writing songs for a musical for his initiative- planning on 5, but he'll see how it goes +/-. I'm not sure if it'll just be him on a keyboard singing, or if he's going to bring in friends (including a classmate who's been on broadway herself).

he's in his second term of a musical theater songwriting class with NY Youth Symphony that has been amazing for him. each term, they've had current broadway stars (friends of the teacher who is an active Bwy writer) come in for a class and the kids collaborate in groups of 2 or 3 to write them a song specific to their voice and background. I've never seen him so excited about something as he was the first time he came back from that. the class has songs performed at Joes Pub (where Hamilton started) by students from Manhattan School of Music (similar to Juilliard) who were amazing last year. and it was really cool for us to hear the two songs he wrote the music for (assisted on the lyrics) sung by people who can really sing. I'll try to dig up a video from that....

Would love to see a video!

This was from last year's class. He wrote all the music and helped with the lyrics (lyricist in first video was an 8th grader- class is from 8th, mostly HS to college age... a couple Columbia students)

Never Say No

Stuck Here With You (they wrote a musical version of the movie, 10 Things I Hate About You)
