Also, is SJ not good at offense? They couldn't even keep the puck in the zone that last power play, passing seems poor too.
They are very skilled. They run hot and cold just like any other team.
They run hot and cold like no other team. They have superior talent and zero SCF appearances. One of the biggest group of chokers in the last 30 years of hockey IMO.
I don't think that's true, actually. They seem to always punch at right about exactly their weight. Since the lockout, they've won 7 out of the 9 series where they've had a better goal differential then their opponent. When they've had a worse goal differential, they've won 1 out of 7.
They always seem to be either the 2nd or 3rd best team in the Conference. That's good news and bad news, I suppose.
They are mostly hot, but when they are cold they are ice cold.
Goal differential usually will decide your fate in the playoffs, not sure what that proves.
They have a couple of HOFers, always have one of the best powerplays, got a Stanley Cup winning goalie, and they come up short every year. They also have an outstanding coach and good fan support. They won the President's trophy, have been the #1 seed in the west three times, and are usually a top four seed. At some point franchises break through, even the Canucks have reached the finals and that thing is a mess.
That they're consistently one of the better, but not the best, teams in the NHL. And that they typically beat the worse teams, and lose to the better ones.
If during the same timespan they'd lost to worse teams three more times, but punched it through and won the Cup in '10 or '11, the "monkey" wouldn't be on their back, nor would anyone consider them chokers. Even though they would've had a worse record against inferior teams.
Spain were chokers in football until they weren't. The Red Sox were chokers in baseball until they got good/####-hot lucky over the last decade. Lots of variance at work.
Even America's team was on the ropes in the final minute against St. Joe's.
