Field and weather conditions in London this week (1 Viewer)

Is anyone concerned about the way last year's game in London looked? I realize the Dolphins were god awful but I remember that the field was a total mess and no one was getting good traction. If I remember correctly most fantasy players had very poor output. This year I have several players going across the pond and I am hesitating to start them....Brees and Rivers, Gates, Deuce, VJax.

Just wondering if this is a topic being discussed anywhere?

being from Ireland the weather is similar due to the proximity, and at the moment the rain is blanketing the country and the winds are at about 60-70mph. not exactly the greatest passing weather. Rain is due to pass by the weekend, but the winds are set to stay.

I also seem to remeber tha there was a rughby tournament on the field within a few days before the NFL game which tore the field up.

There was an England soccer match a couple of weeks ago, but the field has been untouched since and looks pretty good to be honest. Hopefully the rain holds off and it dries out a little, but the weather this year is better than last as we had about 5-6 days of continuos rain leading up to it. Nothing like that this time.

Thanks! That is what I needed to feel a little better.

How bad is the wind? Will it affect the passing game?

at the moment about 60-70mph. Wembley is also in a wind pocket in london, no other large buildings around it to deflect the gusts and the shape of the roof also allows the wind to flow in. I've seen soccer goal kicks (kickoffs) go perhaps only 15 yards and start coming back towards the kicker in similar conditions in there. i would temper expectations for any passes over 20 yards as the winds don't seem to be abating.

My silly question is when is the game really? If lineups with Chargers and Saints need to be in earlier?

kickoff is 5pm British time (clocks go back sunday for daylight savings) so i'ts 1pm EST. but it will be cold and windy into the evening this side of the pond.

Great. Another wasted game. I understand the NFL trying to branch out, but when you get 2 straight years of rain and wind, what's the point? They need to either look at a different time of year, or a different stadium.

If you were in Ireland wouldnt you be using kilometers per hour?

And there was me trying to be helpful by staying away from the metric system for the rest of you....lol

Agree, Cardiff in wales has an 80,000 seater with a retractable roof to create the dome.

Looks like 18 mph winds and "light" rain predicted for Sunday.

Not to turn this into a WDIS, but WDIS? Brees in Jolly Old London or Big Ben at home vs. G-Men (yeah, yeah...I know. Take it over to the ACF).

I live an hour's drive north of London, and it's not that windy here, about 6-10 MPH, it hasn't rained since Monday night.

FWIW, the brits use MPH, not KMH.

Guys

The website you need to keep an eye on is linked below. It's the Met Office website and in my experience the most reliable there is for UK weather. At the moment they are predicting rain on Saturday night, but bright weather with possible occasional showers on Sunday. The winds might be worth keeping an eye on as they are forecast at 17mph with gusts of up to 33mph. But check back late on Saturday or early Sunday and you will get a much more accurate idea.

http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/uk/se/...st_weather.html

From a rainfall point of view, check out the radar map from the same site at http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/uk/radar/index.html

This enables you to track rain moving across the country (it nearly always goes west to east). I have used this for years and it is very reliable.

Whilst the way the turf performed last year was obviously very disappointing, it's worth noting that it had rained steadily all day prior to the game, and for much of the week beforehand.

I only live about 40 miles from the stadium and would post an update on Sunday but can't because I'll be going to the game!!! :ptts:

(sorry, but as an English follower of the NFL for 20 years you can't imagine how unbelievable it is to have proper NFL games in our country!).

That is cool that you are going. What got you in to American football?

It's been shown on TV over here since the 1980s, but since Sky Sports took over around 20 years ago the coverage has increased to the extent that we are probably not far short of what you get in the US. We get two live 1.00 games, two live 4.15 games, and the late game on Sunday, plus every MNF, every Thursday game and every play-off game live, also we get NFL Total Access and live college games via NASN. There isn't much live TV sport on Sunday evenings and therefore the NFL coverage has attracted a lot of casual sports followers over the years. Also, there are huge betting opportunities over here and the NFL is a very betting-friendly sport over here (and, if I may so, we don't have the draconian anti-betting laws many of you have to suffer). Check in to Sportingindex.com on a Sunday if you want to see the range of sophisticated betting markets on the NFL.Personally, I loathe soccer (my favourite UK sport is rugby league, which is far closer in spirit to football than rugby union) and it didn't take me long to get involved once I started watching Sky's coverage. Most Americans would be surprised at how committed and knowledgable many Brit-based NFL fans are, but really it's a small world nowadays, we have the internet and live TV coverage just like you guys and there is no more reason why we shouldn't love the game than anyone in the States. I belong to a UK-based forum over here where we have detailed discussions each week sharing news on inactives, who Asomugha will be covering, whether such-and-such a defense can stop the wildcat this week etc. I'm in a fantasy league with a bunch of other Brits (as well as my customary MFL ones based in the US).Many of us are just the same as you guys when it comes to following the NFL, except we're a few thousand miles away, speak with funny accents and have bad teeth.

one of the dudes in my league is in the netherlands and he's probably one of the best players in there.

knows his football inside and out from playing fantasy football.

I don't know if it's broadcast over there, but I think he actually watches games online.

He should know a good QB when he sees one, anway. Ten years ago his local team (the Amsterdam Admirals) had Kurt Warner as its starting QB and Jake Delhomme as the back-up...

I was in Amterdam a few years ago with some of my buddies and the owner kept the bar open late for just us to watch the Monday night game. Pretty cool guy, was really into American football.Nice to see you share the passion. Hopefully you will get to see a game with a pass over 20 yards.

Or you could schedule it in the summer/fall (kick off classic?) when the weather doesn't totally suck? This makes no sense.

Note on DST is Wrong unless Great Britain changes clocks a WEEK before we do here
Yes we do go back a week before you do in the US.Also, trying to predict what the weather will be like in London based on what it is in Ireland is a bit silly, they are about 300 miles apart. And it can be raining in one part of London but completely dry all day over Wembley anyway, the weather in Britain is a topic all in itself. It's not like Texas or wherever where it's very predictable day to day.

I didn't think it made since either until Lord Lucan arrived and explained! The official fbg weather forcast has winds 17-22. I am stuck with Rivers and Brees many leagues!

I can see why NFL needs to play over there but I agree it should be first couple weeks. Not this time of year when you know your gonna have bad conditions well in advance. I better throw out my kickers too. Doesn;t sound like they will be in a kicker friendly enviroment! Unfortunatly I am stuck with BOTH QB;S because of byes to my others. But should be a fun game for McAllister!

As a Cincinnati native and life-long Bengals fan, you can't imagine how unbelievable it is to have improper NFL games most every season.

I'll be there too :excited: ...even missing a proper football match (soccer to you guys) to go, as couldn't afford both this weekend :goodposting: . Here's hoping for a much more exciting game than last year!

It's raining here today (Friday). Looks like tomorrow will be dry, with possibly some rain early Sunday and then clearing. My only concern is the grass tends to be cut shorter for football (soccer) than you guys would have it for American football, and so might be why traction was so bad last year, as well as the horrendous conditions.

Hehe, all the Brits coming out in this thread. I'm from and live in London but got into football when I married an American. Ended up moving out to Indianapolis for three years. Colts started getting real good while I was there and a few guys at work invited me into their fanstasy league. I lost the first 4 games of that season but ended up getting to the Championship game with the help a backup RB that no one had heard of...Larry Johnson was his name :nerd:

Anyway....the weather won't be that bad, no heavy rain or gusty winds. No different from many northern states of America at this time of year, football weather really. Its a winter sport :goodposting:

I've been in the Netherlands for the past two weeks for work and have been purchasing the NFL Gamepass. It's great, for $25 USD you get all the week's game's in HD, and after they've been played they're saved to your account for a week if you want to re-watch them. It's a great service, only available outside the U.S.
