Final Roster Cuts - post significant & semi-significant cuts. (1 Viewer)

Ross Tucker‏@RossTuckerNFL14m

Close to $500K signing bonus down the drain. MT: @ProFootballTalk: Raiders are waiving fourth-round QB Tyler Wilson, per league source
Peanuts compared to the $$ they wasted on Palmer/Flynn
Flynn, yes, wasted. In fairness though, over the last year and half Palmer has started 26 games for the Raiders, thrown for for 6500+ yards and 35 TDs, and last season posted a respectable 85.3 passer rating while throwing 22TDs and 14 INTs over 15 games.
You could discuss whether that production (mostly in garbage time, none of which amounted to much in terms of wins) was worth the $13 million a year Oakland was paying Palmer (I certainly don't think it was), but I don't think it's going out on a limb to suggest that Carson Palmer's production for the Oakland Raiders this year (0 yards, 0 TDs) will be worth nowhere near the $9.5 million dollars he'll be eating up on Oakland's cap.
My point. Its absolutely devastating for a team to have so much dead money tied up.
If Oakland felt "stuck" with Palmer then they shouldn't have let him go. I think he's a fine QB. Generally the contract goes with a player so this is odd and seems mishandled by them. It's not surprising to see the Raiders shoot themselves in the foot.
their going to try to get him to the practice squad

Bolden is a good receiver, just hasn't done it much for the Pats yet.

I was expecting Washington to get the boot when they took him off kicks in the preseason.

Bears-Signed LB Jerry Franklin, CB Demontre Hurst, QB Jerrod Johnson, WR Ricardo Lockette, TE Fendi Onobun, FB Harvey Unga and DE Aston Whiteside to the practice squad.

Lockette was a niner and seahawk in 2011. Blazing speed, played very little 2 catches 105 yards. Still, it's always curious when a team takes a chance on a player that was on two other teams practice squads and didn't do much of anything.
The stars were aligned for him in SF and he still couldn't make the cut (wide open WR competition, trained and roomed with kapernick, harbaugh talked him up). I'd be selling.

Breaking news this AM: #Packers have released QB B.J. Coleman. No word on who backup QB will be but evidently not Coleman per NFL source

That leaves the Pack with no back-up QB. They must be making a move for someone (Flynn maybe?) that has some grasp of the system to go into week one with no back-up.

Are they going to pull Vince Young back in?

I hope not, he was awful, his throws go all over the place, almost like he has no control of them. I imagine something will happen today or tomorrow, they can't enter week one with no back-up QB, I certainly hope they have a plan in place.

Probably more reliable than BJ Coleman.

But I guess this means that Favre is a better teacher than Aaron Rodgers... ;)

I will take him over VY any day. I don't think Wallace is a stud or anything, but he has been serviceable when needed, not a bad play by the Pack in comparison to what they had. Just mho.

Randall Cobb maybe as capable at QB as any backup out there.
I've been thinking this all summer. He's shown he's got the football intelligence to pick their O up quickly and has done that. Playing in the NFL is not the SEC, but he "has to" get a shot in practice if Rodgers gets hurt.

The pack pride themselves on having this complicated offense and can't really expect someone to walk in off the street and run it.

Last time I can recall McCarthy even being asked was the summer before and it was in regards to him being a triple threat. All he about said was it was intriguing but he's just going to play WR this year. I don't recall seeing an article this offseason on Cobb playing any other positions.

Interesting TE Mickey Shuler(20 years ago Jet TE same name) was cut 10? days before cut down yet was signed to the Falcons practice squad. They must've known he was PS caliber and figured a week isn't going to make a difference, let's move on.

and then cut Washington, out of Washington / Bolden / Blount surprised its washington getting cut. If Vereen goes down their not really a pass catching back there.
As far as returns though, I read a few articles and their BB quotes in them that were like meh no worries there, Leon's got it. We're just trying the rooks to see what they can do. There was a confidence in Leon that really makes this a curious move.

I wonder if he's re-signed shortly and there's a backdoor agreement to take a week or two off.

Even at his age, he's better than some Jet RBs now(I'm really not a fan of their backfield) and the Pats risked losing him here.

eagles cut salas
Salas, Shepard and Momah all cut.
Salas signed to Practice Squad.
I'd have liked to see him stay in STL or go somewhere he can play. I don't know why the Iggles hang onto him if they aren't going to play him.

He only got a little bit of time his rookie year but he did pretty well

http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/gamelog/_/id/14106/greg-salas

Also surprised he clears waivers and no one gives him a shot. At any point someone could grab him off their PS. Not sure what's the prob with this kid. I see a guy that caught a zillion passes his senior year in college, did pretty well as a rook for a handful of games and....wishing he'd get a shot to play.

Tyler Wilson clear waviers yet? Rotoworld was speculating that Tyler Wilson could get picked up. It would make sense for a team with an established QB like Green Bay, Pittsburgh etc.

how long does it take?
24 hours
I'm pretty sure it's 48 hours, but if you have a source for 24, that would be great.
Just going by what has happened in the past week. Players were released/wavied on Saturday and were claimed on Sunday.

Good enough for me. Maybe I just misread that

From NFL.com:

Stephen Burton, Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver: Caldwell stayed busy, claiming Burton, the former Vikings wide receiver who is coming off his most promising August since he was selected in the seventh round of the 2011 NFL Draft.
Burton is a very good blocker for a WR so he should help the Jaguars there and on special teams.

Last season the Vikings used Burton as kind of a H-Back going in motion and then sealing off crashing LBer on runs. So he offers a lot of versatility.

A source told NFL.com's Ian Rapoport on Monday morning that the San Francisco 49ers are expected to sign fourth-round draft pick Chris Harper off the Seattle Seahawks' practice squad. Per Rapoport, the Seahawks "fought like crazy" to keep Harper, but the 49ers ultimately won the bidding war.

The 49ers made the move official Monday afternoon, when they announced Harper had been signed to a three-year deal.

After the 49ers lost athletic H-back prospect MarQueis Gray on waivers to the Cleveland Browns, they apparently settled on Harper as the fallback successor to Delanie Walker. At 6-foot-1 and 235 pounds, Harper could see time at tight end as well as wide receiver.

Harper impressed the Seahawks with his physicality and athleticism at rookie camp, but he quickly fell behind receivers Jermaine Kearse and Stephen Williams in training camp. Harper will be a developmental project in San Francisco, with the hope that he'll evolve into a matchup problem down the line.

I am not sure how well Harper does as a blocker. But it sounds like the 49ers may look to use him in a similar way.

Harrell was signed by the Jets a week or so ago. I haven't seen him cut yet.

He's a future coach-at what level I don't know, but between his time with the Browns and Packers he coached at Oklahoma State and they loved him. His football intelligence is very high and he has a knack for teaching.
Radio unofficially reporting McElroy will be cut, so, if true, that could leave an opening if they want to keep four QBs.

Jets also cut Dan Carpenter. Is that his 3rd cut already?
four QBs isn't really practical.

In the last decade or so we've seen many teams shift from three to two, I can't imagine it going to four. Even when many of these teams had two, they also had one on the practice squad.

Brad Smith-a QB that can play other spots; that'd be fine like in years past. He, BTW, could sign an injury settlement and play again this year. Sore ribs is not exactly a normal out for the year injury.

I'll be surprised if the Jets have four heading into the season
Okay, so Harrell is gone but they still have four with Quinn pick up. Next to go?

Looks like McElroy completed injury settlement and is headed to Bengals.

KC Chiefs - Claimed on waiver wire from other teamsSeahawks CB Ron Parker, Seahawks TE Sean McGrath, Seahawks DT Jaye Howard, BrownsLB James-Michael Johnson, 49ers CB Marcus Cooper, 49ers WR Chad Hall, Packers LB Dezman Moses.
I'd be really curious to see a net differential between how many players a team claimed, and how many of a team's cuts got claimed by other teams. The fact that a lot of Seattle and San Fran players are getting claimed is an indication of the overall talent level. The fact that Kansas City is claiming so many other teams' roster trash is an indication of the lack of talent. It's crazy to think that 7 of the 53 guys on KC's roster all failed to make the 53-man roster for a different franchise.
