Fitz re-signs for 4 years (1 Viewer)

Not surprising, basically they paid him his huge 2008 money, and in turn he agreed to alleviate the 2009 mega cap hit in exchange for a no-trade and another $15mm guaranteed.

I think something is not right here. Why isnt it reported on the Arizona Cardinals Website? This would be huge news for them no? Instead This is still on the front page.

4 years -- 40 mildoesnt seem like a lot
It makes him the highest paid WR in the league.$33 mil over the first 3 yrs with $30 of that guaranteed (and basically all $33m of it is, barring catastropic injury)I definitely think he could have got more though, and applaud him for not trying to force his way out of 'Zona over this. Also, I think he was VERY, VERY smart to insist on a 4 yr deal...he's going to be under 30 and entering FA in what will likely be an upcapped salary cap year. Hes going to get PAID.

I know this is another subject, but if the NFL allows the cap to go away they will lose me as a fan.

Cards, Fitzgerald agree on 4 years, $40M

Posted: March 11, 2008

Sporting News staff reports

After the Arizona Cardinals had made it clear they had no plans to trade Larry Fitzgerald, they are on the verge of locking up the superstar wide receiver for the next four years. Pending NFL approval, Fitzgerald and the Cardinals have agreed upon a four-year contract extension worth $40 million, as announced on Fitzgerald's offficial website, larry-fitzgerald.com.

The two-time Pro Bowler led the NFC with 100 receptions and 10 touchdowns in the 2007 season. "I'm very happy with this. My intent was to stay with the Cardinals, I'm grateful that we were able to get this done," said Fitzgerald on his site.

The contract provides for him to get $30 million in guaranteed money as he earns $33 million over the first three years. It also includes a no-trade clause, meaning the Cardinals cannot deal Fitzgerald to another team without his consent.

Did he in fact have a no trade clause before is my main question? Otherwise what is the significance of saying he has one now and it leaves open to interpetation on his end. Kind of funny actually when you look at how bad Arizona is as a franchise. I leave this as still an open item for discussion if he wants to play for a contender or am I worng in this assumption?

my sentiments exactly. Any chance the Birds aggressively go after ROY now? I doubt it, but I gotta believe they can get him for less than what they were willing to pay for Fitz. If they could send Lito and a first round pick to them, get ROY and keep Brown as the #2, run Curtis strictly in the slot/Welker type WR, they could be very potent.

I don't understand.

Before: $31Million next 2 years

After: $33Million next 3 years, $7Million in 4th year

???

So he's getting paid $2Million in the 3rd year???

Why would he sign for an extra 2 years for just $9Million more??? He would easily double that as a FA.

Not to hijack, but I think the Lions don't need a starting CB, they acquired Bodden in a trade for Rogers. If I was the Eagles, I think I'd focus on Chad Johnson. As to Fitzgerald, this was a win-win for both parties. Fitz gets guaranteed money, and the chance at another contract, and the Cards get cap room, and get to hang on to one of the best young WRs in the game.

I don't understand. Before: $31Million next 2 yearsAfter: $33Million next 3 years, $7Million in 4th year???
$30 mill in guarantees. The 31 mill was base salaries, if he blows out a knee in 2008, he can kiss the 2009 17 mill goodbye.

People need to remember that whatever he was due is not necessarily what he would actually make. Last year, remember, Randy Moss was due like $12 million from the Raiders and took $3 million to go to NE (and made another $2 million in inventives).

What Fitz'contract terms were before this would not mean he ever would have seen that money as it was cap prohibitive. So that is not exactly the barometer of what his contract shuold be and what he would ever actually see in real dollars.

Only if they cut him before 09. Which would get him much more money on the open market. MAkes no sense.
If he gets cut before 2009, chances are his injuries would be bad enough that he wouldn't be getting a huge deal. It's protection against a career-ending injury. Fitz would be gambling $17 mill that he wouldn't get hurt in 2008. That's a big gamble.

You're not accounting for the fact that he won't have to live in Philly for half of the year.

true, but he definitely would have seen 14 mil this year and 17 mil next year. Due to his accelorators the 31 million was guaranteed (granted they could have cut him next year to save 17million.)

Just look at the bottom line. He re-upped for 2 years to get $9Million. That makes no sense at any level. I'm sure when the real numbers come in they will be quite different. Otherwise, Fitz got screwed big time.

FITZ OWNS Cards organization in this deal.

John Clayton summarized this on Mike & Mike radio this morning.

1. ARZ has only $400K cap room and doesn't even have a minimum roster size. They can't even fill the roster with minimum contracts.

2. Fitz wanted a 4-yr deal... ARZ wanted to spread over 6 years.

3. In before deal, FITZ was SCHEDULED TO MAKE $31 mil... he would have never seen that money as the organization was mismanaged the team cap so poorly.

4. FITZ gets $30 mil guaranteed with a no trade clause. He essentially locked in the money from his original contract.

5. ARZ gets some cap relief, as the bonuses get prorated over 4 years, but not nearly as much as they wanted.

Guys, let's keep something in mind. Fitz had all the leverage. If this deal wasn't favorable for him, there's no way he would sign it. To say "Fitz got screwed big time" or anything close to that without intimate knowledge of the previous and current contract deals is simply being naive.

I may not know the details of his contract or how it compares, but I can say for certain that Fitzgerald and his agent did not bend over and take one by signing this contract.

As the situation currently stands, yes, it will. The owners are a lock to opt of the the CBA, and the Union, specifically Gene Upshaw, has shown little inclination to start re-negotiating. I do not trust Gene Upshaw to do anything but what is best for him. Not for his union, not for the game, but for him.

The only way he wouldn't have seen it is if the Cards CUT him after this year. If they wouldn't trade him, why in the hell would they cut him? He was guaranteed to see it as long as he was on the roster.
4. FITZ gets $30 mil guaranteed with a no trade clause. He essentially locked in the money from his original contract.
Why would he volunteer to be raped for 2010 and 2011 for a measley $4.5/year???

Exactly. He wouldn't. Therefore there is obviously more to this than any of us know at this point.

I agree there has to be. But if so, this original story is at least somewhat false.

As it currently stands...yes. I don't think it ever gets to that though. The owners and the NFL know its not in their best interest.

I told you the reason. you mentioned the bottom line. Here's the bottom line:On a per-year average, Fitz got more than any other WR in the league. And his money is real, he can expect to actually get all of it, unlike Javon Walker or someone else like that. If the Cardinals HAD cut Fitz, he wouldn't have gotten $31 mill in the first two years of whatever deal he had gotten from someone else. I don't want to speculate the deal he may have gotten, but he wouldn't have gotten that kind of money. And any new deal he would have gotten would have been for more than 4 years.I am sure FItz didn't think he was gonna get cut, but it was a possibility. I am sure his agent told him that. A team that tight against the cap might have to cut him, or trade him to a team he doesn't want to go to.So Fitz gets the money he was scheduled to earn, in guarantees, and gets to cash in again in 4 years. There weren't guarantees that he was going to see that $31 million, and he had no protection against injuries. now he gets both, and a short term deal. This is a very good move for Fitz.

I think it remains to be seen if the bolded part is true. If he signed an extension, I am not sure if he is adding 4 years to his existing two years = under contract for 6 years. Or it could be adding 2 years to his existing 2 years to make it 4 years. He may or may not be able to get rich again in 4 years. I'm sure this will be clarified soon.

Let's say that unlikely scenario played out:He was guaranteed to get $14Million this year, the team always said so. So he plays, collects his $14Million and is due $17Million in 2009. The Cards cut him before the 09 season. So he doesn't get his $17Million from the Cards in 09. Instead, he goes to a new team. A team who gives him $30Million MORE guaranteed and a $10Million/year salary. He just doubled his 2009 income he would have made with the Cards and will make far more than $4.5Million per year in 2010 and 2011. Why would he do this deal with the Cards again?

from nfl.com:

"The Arizona Cardinals and wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald are close to a contract extension that could be finalized as early as today, reports NFL Network's Adam Schefter.

The news was first reported on Fitzgerald's personal web site. According to the report, Fitzgerald re-signed with the Cardinals for four years and $40 million, of which $30 million is guaranteed.

The Cardinals have not commented on an extension.

The two sides have reportedly been working on restructuring Fitzgerald's current contract, which would pay the four-year veteran $14.6 million in 2008 and $17.4 million in 2009.

Fitzgerald, 24, earned his second trip to the Pro Bowl this season after finishing with 100 receptions for 1,409 yards and 10 touchdowns. The third overall pick in the 2004 NFL Draft, Fitzgerald has twice topped 100 receptions and has two 1,000-yard seasons."

Does the word "injury" not appear on your computer? You are casually projecting a $30 mill guarantee 12 months from now, and while I understand that it seems like a worthy gamble to you, you aren't the one that stands to lose big money if something bad happens. There's a reason players don't like getting the franchise tag. If you know what that reason is, then you know why Fitz did this deal.

It seems unlikely that it is an extension of four years to his current deal, as his current deal is the problem. I think the last two years of his current deal are gone, making this essentially a two-year extension.

He NEVER wanted out of AZ. If he wanted to leave he had the leverage to make that happen. To the eagle Fans saying he wanted out to play for a contender, keep in mind both bird teams were 8-8. Cards have a brighter future IMO

He was already guaranteed $31Million under the old contract (2 years). There is no reason to sign for another 2 years for only $9Million more. IMHO, of course...

The smart move is to get as much guaranteed money as you can while you are among the top WRs in the game. Injuries, franchise tag, poor achievement all could prevent him from becoming a free agent in two years.

If you assume he has a ten percent chance of taking a serious injury next season (and each season thereafter), then you should value this contract at about $39.3 million when you factor in the risk.

But, if you take the franchise tag into consideration, he collects no bonus in year 3 and he makes the average salary of the top 5 WRs in 2010 and 2011. The franchise salary for WRs is under $8 million right now. But, the injury risk would have to be factored for every year that he plays because none of the money is guaranteed in any year. The value of playing out his contract and staying on as a franchise tag WR through 2011 is about $42-44 million depending on the tag value of the top WRs is in 2010/11.

By taking this deal, he eliminated virtually all of his risk, received a no-trade clause, and preserved a chance to get that cap-less deal in 2011 (should he come out the other side with no injuries and performing well).

Seems like Fitz is did a good job of not stepping over a dollar to pick up a dime.

I'd like to see a link to this. It's my understanding, and obviously the understanding of every other poster in this thread besides you, that the $17 million due next year under his old contract was not guaranteed.

He was signed for the next 2 years but he was guaranteed $0. Even if the team said they were keeping him, they may have found it too difficult to stomach paying him that much this year and released him . . . meaning he would have collected $0 from Arizona in 2008 and 2009.That may not have been a bad thing, as there would have been plenty of other suitors, but he was not guaranteed a penny from the Cardinals.

3. In before deal, FITZ was SCHEDULED TO MAKE $31 mil... he would have never seen that money as the organization was mismanaged the team cap so poorly.
 If he had received all $40 million up front would you say he was raped in 2009, 2010 and 2011 for $0.00?
He was already guaranteed $31Million under the old contract (2 years). There is no reason to sign for another 2 years for only $9Million more. IMHO, of course...
I'd like to see a link to this. It's my understanding, and obviously the understanding of every other poster in this thread besides you, that the $17 million due next year under his old contract was not guaranteed.
You must have missed the several places I said "unless he is cut". That is the one and only way he would not have seen the $14Million and $17Million. If he was on the team in 2008 (the team said many times he would be no matter what happened) and 2009, he would have seen every penny.
