Five Guys thread, a 130+ page swordfight. (1 Viewer)

There is a 2 year wait to get a burger from the place I go. The meat is from the corpse of a 200 year old Christian Saint and the bun is made from ground Tyrannosaurus bones.

You people are uneducated slobs.

I don't think I want to even try this place now.
I think you should try them and formulate your own opinion. I was underwhelmed by the experience but it's still a pretty good burger. Fries are hit or miss, mostly miss but I'm a shoestring guy.

They just opened one around the corner. It was OK I guess. In & out is better and cheaper. I was fired up for the fries but they we're greasy/soggy and a little undercooked. That peanut oil and cajun seasoning makes the place stink too. I live in the middle of burger heaven though so maybe I'm biased. The Counter, Umami, father's office, in & out, Five guys and nancy silverton's new place Short Order all within a few minutes. Five guys a distant 6th.
Rustic Canyon also has a ridiculously good burger. Hell Shangri La and Fraiche have great burgers. Living in SM has made me a bit of a burger snob, but what can I say, there is nothing like a great burger and sides (im looking at you cheesey tater tots from umami)

:lmao: at TWO IN THE DOOR! Still never heard that.
Never heard at any of the DC locations (including the Dumfries, VA location which is actually owned by the company rather than franchised, and the original location in Falls Church.) Thought for sure that I would hear it here in Ohio as they opened up new locations. Nope.
Original location was in Arlington. But, yeah, been at a lot of Five Guys here and never heard that.

I've been to Rustic Canyon but didn't have the burger, will have to check it out. I forgot I had a Laurel tavern burger a few weeks ago. Another damn fine burger.

Five guys is more of a suburban hit then an urban hit. In the burbs there's almost no quality burger locations and certainly no fast food varieties. I really enjoys the fries. Not b/c they're my ideal fry but b/c they're fresh and there's no comparison between the taste of fresh and frozen fries. Does any place else even serve fresh fries? Never understood that. In the city, you better have a better burger option then 5 guys or you should move to a different city.

you can order online at Five Guys.Regular Cheeseburger (2 patties) is $5.59Little Cheeseburger (1 patty) is $4.19Regular Fries are $2.59Regular Drink is $1.99Little + Fries + Drink = $8.77 + taxRegular + Fries + Water = $8.18 + taxis $5 for a burger really worth complaining this much about?
Cheeseburger and fries, no drink is 9.99 here with tax included. They should at least throw in a water ice.

Yeah, but you're sharing the fries with like two other people, right?

Because they fill half the bag with them!

There's an Apple-like cult around In N Out that I just dont understand. The burger is nice for fast food, but hardly something to crave. And the fries are ok if you hate the taste of potato. Plus, there's that whole snobby off-the-menu menu BS. Yet somehow it inspires rabid devotion.

It's really just consistently fresh and good. That's pretty much what it comes down to. Quality of ingredients trump anything close to that price range. Only thing off the menu you need to know is animal style. (or protein style if you want a lettuce wrapped burger)

What's up with the lights on that place? Feels like a classroom.
:hifive:Horrendous. I can see THROUGH my skin in that lighting. Pretty sure I caught my pancrease at work in the mirror once.
They need to take everything down a notch in that place. Walk out of there feeling all jittery. But hey, at least they got free peanuts. Has anyone in the history of the world craved peanuts with their burger and fries. "I know what will go great with this big, juicy burger. A nice helping of ####in' peanuts." Weirdos.
Dumb. And I know it's hip and cool to throw your peanut shells all over the ground, but come on...it's not a major league dugout. It's gross. Have some freaking manners. As if I want to sit at an empty table with what looks like the remains of an elephant orgy.

Close enough. It was about a mile up the road from where I lived at Bailey's Crossroads, which had a Falls Church mailing address.

Its all about Hellburger now. http://rayshellburger.com/images/1725_Menu_11-18-11.pdfJust be ready to drop $20 on your meal.
It used to be such a great value. It's still an ok value, but the price changes were huge. I like that they offer a smaller version now, but it costs the same as the previous larger version. When my wife and I could each have a large burger, side, and drink for $20 total, it was worth the drive from Fairfax. Now I have to be in the area. I'll usually stop there on my way to a Redskins game.Burger Joint is where it's at now. They are quickly expanding.

Five Guys has solid burgers and fries. It is a good mix of quality, price, and time. If I am in a rush, I will run through Wendys. If I have time to sit down and order at a table, I will go to one of the many restaurants in town. Some of the best burgers I have had came from small bars where all the burgers are made fresh.

I need to try BGR again next time I'm back in VA. We ate at the Arlington location shortly after it opened up. Just remember it wasn't worth the long wait.

Yeah, not sure I'd wait in a long line for any restaurant anymore. I used to not mind long waits, but I just don't see the point. I can always come back another time.Since you seem to like ham on your burger, BGR makes a good Cuban burger. It's my go-to. The Greek is also really good as is The Wellington. The Southwestern is...weird. Not really a burger, more of a sloppy joe consistency, but does have a pretty good kick (spiciness) to it.

Haven't been to the Hellburger in awhile. Love it (and Ray's the Steaks), but I hate parking in that area. Didn't realize the price increase, but that's a huge difference from when I was last there.I do like BGR.

Five guys needs to offer cheddar cheese and they'd really be onto something.
That would be great, but probably just not worth it for them. That emulsified crap is so dirt cheap and I'd guess 90% of their customers greatly prefer it over cheddar. When most people think of cheeseburgers, they think of good old-fashioned American pasteurized process cheese food.

There is a small chain, called Boardwalk Burger, which claims to predate 5 guys, with a lot of their central elements. They were based in the Delmarva area. Their menu is slightly more expansive than five guys, you can get a wheat bun or a bacon bleu burger, but I will go their over five guys for the cheddar burger alone. Its not overall as good as five guys, but I've grown to hate American cheese. That's not food, its a consumable.

Lived off 11th and Montana, back alley from FO, I'm getting depressed, Florida is one of the worst places to find good cuisine unless you love seafood, which I do but this place pales compared to SoCal. Everything in Florida like the rest of the South is deep fried. Miss In N Out, Fatburger also a decent place, much better than most of the fast food joints and i would put them ahead of Five Guys. I've eaten at the Counter, meh.

:goodposting: I don't get the love for In N Out it's really nothing special. I have had better burger's at Carls Jr when on the WC.

The fries are excellent if they are right out of the grease. Once you throw them in a sack for a few minutes and they get all steamy, they get limp, mushy and aren't very good anymore.

Had a burger called "The Farm" last week in a local place in Naples that had pulled pork, cheese, a fried egg and bacon on an all-beef patty. It was scrum-dilly-icious.

I like Five Guys best "fast food" burger and I have never heard any of the stuff or had any of the lighting issues/rest of the Yelp guys complaints. Maybe that is an LA thing, but I have been to Five Guys in Charlotte, VA when I used to live there and all the way up to NY and they are all relatively quiet and no one shouts stuff when we walk in. I haven't had to wait 5 minutes in line even with a stacked line, let alone one person taking 5 minutes. Its a good burger, not the best, but well worth it instead of going to any other "fast" location. My favorite burger place in Charlotte is Bad Daddy's (used to be Big Daddy's until a diner in NY made them change the name). They are in the Charlotte airport now and still decent there, but definitely not exactly as good as their real restaurants.

This is crazy talk. Like saying a Whopper is better than a Five Guys burger.

I don't think I want to even try this place now.
This is how I feel, even though there's one within walking distance of my house. I can't justify the cost considering the reviews. But I think I'll try it this weekend just so I can yelp it.:Yelpelite:

BGR makes a good Cuban burger. It's my go-to.
Another vote for the Cuban at BGR  I'll take Hellburger over BGR tho -- imo the Au Poivre/Danish Bleu/Bacon burger can't be beat!

There was another thread where I got smacked around for going to Steak n Shake over Five Guys. Well, I finally had a chance to go to Five Guys.

First, Five Guys, by itself is a dang good burger. Very worthy of note and easily the best hamburger that I have had in Chicago. The fries (cajun of course) are good as well.

In comparison to In-N-Out (which is my favorite), I have to say that though I think Five Guys is right there, I still prefer the In-N-Out burger over the Five Guys burger thought but it is close. Another area where Five Guys falls short is that In-N-Out is a much better value than Five Guys. Five Guys certainly has the better fries and the margin on that is large. Overall, Five Guys is a great substitute to In-N-Out while living in Chicago and I don't mind paying the higher dollar amount for a burger like that once in a while.

It is interesting to me that both operations are similar in that they both have limited menus that just focus on the burger.

Although not not my absolute favorite, I am a Five Guys fan.

All fries need to be eaten piping hot once they absorb a little moisture it's all downhill. The trick to In-N-Out fries is to order them well done. That guarantees you get them fresh out of the oil. No sitting around.

For me, the trick is animal style. I can't tell you what I have against In-N-Out fries.... I just don't like them much by themselves.

Walked by the Five Guys around noon. About 5 people in the whole place and as I was passing the door I hear an ear shattering "NUMBER 83 PLEASE!!!!". Shut it down.

Yes it does sound crazy when you put it that way but I truly don't see the fascination with In N Out and agree with dparker's anology. People from the WC just put it up there on a pedastal "OMG you haven't been to an In N Out, well then you are missing the best burger IN THE WORLD" (Iverson voice over) or act shocked if you don't like it. I tried it and was highly disappointed, it's just not that good in my opinion.

I don't get animal style anymore cuz there's enough flavor, fat and calories in a double-double. Do they charge extra now for burger and fries animal style?
