There are number of reasons. First of all, their burgers are good. Good bread, good meat, good bacon, American cheese. It's a good burger. Secondly, the competition's burgers suck. Their fries are great, especially with some vinegar. They also rode in on the coattails of In n Out to some extent and benefited from the simplicity of their model, while not having to compete with them. In n Out is content to stay out west, which left a gaping hole waiting to be filled for people on the east coast who were familiar with In n Out and wished they were there. People also like to know that their burger is being made to order in front of them. And peanuts. Who that isn't allergic doesn't love a peanut or two? Look, it's a burger, not the greatest one you'll ever have but a solid one, and people will line up to try something that's solid and honest. If you can't figure that much out, maybe you ought to try playing cribbage.'Chaka said:I don't hate it I just think it's overpriced for what you get.
When I'm willing to eat a heart attack waiting to happen, It's because I want food cheap and fast. I don't understand why people pay more and wait longer for "better" crap food. If you've got the time and the money to burn, go get something healthy.Very simple. Order some beef tallow online, and buy and cut some fresh potatoes and soak them in water for 30 minutes.Heat the beef tallow in a fry daddy to 325 degrees. Fry the fries (after they've dried from their soaking) for 5 to 7 minutes.Remove them from the oil and let them sit. Increase the oil to 350 degrees. Fry the fries again for 2 minutes.Drain, salt and enjoy. The double frying process at two different temps will give you a fry crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. Frying them in beef tallow will make them taste like McDonalds fries.Given the beef tallow can handle higher temperatures than vegetable oil, you could possibly increase the oil temps to 350 and 375... depending on what your fryer can do and what you are comfortable with.Anyone know if it's possible to fry potatoes at home? I'd like the recipe, please.

I prefer going to 375 for the final plunge, but this is EXACTLY how to make great french fries. You can use vegetable shortening or even high smoke point oil, but the flavor's in the tallow. Alternately, fry them in oil at 325 and finish them in duck fat at 350. The Counter isn't fast food. If you go after 1pm it's faster than In-N-Out and Fatburger, but not categorized as fast food I don't think.I've mentioned a few earlier in this thread. Had my first Five Guys experience this weekend.
Cheeseburger with everything was decent. I wish the counter lady would have told me how obscene a large fry was before I ordered two (family of four). The fries were nothing special imo. Total tab with fries and pop was $35ish. Decent eats but a tad overpriced for a glorified McDonalds. Not sure I'll bother to read the first 26 pages of this thread. Carry on tho!
Love me some Five Guys burgers, but we recently got a Burger 21 (a new gourmet type burger place local to this area only) in town Ive been itching to get to. I hear the burgers are pretty good, especially the Tex-Mex Haystack (lettuce, tomato, applewood-smoked bacon, Gouda, guacamole, onion strings, chipotle-jalapeño sauce, toasted brioche bun) and the Ahi Tuna burger (panko-crusted, lightly-fried sushi-grade ahi tuna, lettuce, tomato, Sriracha, caramel soy, fresh avocado, pickled cucumber, toasted sesame bun).I've mentioned a few earlier in this thread. I'll get their spicy chicken sandwich from time to time though.Yeah, I'm not sure what they did to them, but back in the day my 'go to' was their Big Bacon Classic. The two I have seen in north county San Diego always seem to be empty, I wouldn't be surprised if they shut down. What kind of competition are they facing in Tampa? The two in North County are very near In-N-Outs and there is no way 5 Guys can compete with In-N-Out, if for no other reason than fanatic brand loyalty in So. Cal.Quality wise they seem to occupy a space between fast food and the gourmet burger trend but their pricing is closer to the gourmet burger places than fast food. I could see that causing a problem and dividing their market.Surprised to hear the one right near me is going out of business. Over saturation of the market?
Yeah 5 Guys fries are woefully inconsistent within and between orders. It's a shame too because when you get a good one it's really good.people starting to realize there are better burgers out there. And definitely better fries.
Anybody that eats at any fast food joint 3-4 times a week has serious problems.o me, their ubiquity has killed the "event" feel of going. I don't see how this could be a "staple" meal for anyone like other fast food might be. So if it's not a 3-4 times a week stop for most, do you need so many of them?
When I was broke/ in college I did this. I was also 50lbs heavier at that point. Now I'll eat fast food only in a pinch when road tripping or something and five guys maybe 5-6 times a yearAnybody that eats at any fast food joint 3-4 times a week has serious problems.o me, their ubiquity has killed the "event" feel of going. Spot on. That's the impression I got. I have yet to see one more than half full in Boise. The two I have seen in north county San Diego always seem to be empty, I wouldn't be surprised if they shut down. Yeah, its one thing if you dont like the burger or fries, but its a step above fast food - just like the places you list - and priced appropriately.Wendys and other fast food value meals are upwards of $9. I get a cheeseburger (2 patties) and regular fries for under $10 at 5 Guys and totally think its worth it. Agree with others that Wendy's new burgers are awful as well, would never buy one again. It's too expensive? Really?$10 for a fast casual decent lunch is not too expensive. On par with Chipolte, Panera, Noodles and Company, potbelly etc.
The quality of the meat may be better (certainly than McD's), however they burn their burger so well done, it negates a lot of any advantage they had. Probably what keeps me from going back much, which is a shame. And why of that genre, Fatburger is still, by far, my fav fast food greasy spoon burger joint.Comparing Five Guys to a burger from Wendy's or McDonald's is crazy. There is no comparison. 5 Guys hands down.
Not getting the hate for Wendy's. Still one of the best burgers and surely the best of the big 3. Value-wise they're better than 5Guys and it's not close, especially since Wendy's upgraded their fries.
