Flagpole Sitta by Harvey Danger (2 Viewers)

Not a great song. That's all I'll add about it. Was it really number one on the Billboard Hot 100?

Or are you just starting music threads because you wanna be startin' something.

It's too high to get over
And too low to get under
You're stuck in the middle
And the pain is thunder...

Also, I believe Harvey Danger did a reunion tour back in 2007. They played the Red Door in Watertown, CT. My friend, who was a rock critic for the metropolitan independent newspaper, went to the show and I tagged along. Sure enough, they had all the cash accoutrements going, even up to and including toddler shirts and shorts.

Very much cash conscious, that band. Knew where there market was. My friend noted that. Disliked them. So did i.

Can't remember what satellite, or alt-rock or college radio station I was listening to a couple years ago, but they had a top 200-ish countdown of the greatest 90s "alternative" songs, and this came in #1. I was... surprised. Cool tune, remember some good partying times listening to it, but not an all-timer, for me anyway.

What about the "I get knocked down, I get up again.....pissing the night away, pissing the night away" song?

More your jam?
Chumbawamba, who actually started as a punk band, if I'm not mistaken. I'd had an early 7" they were on. They were an anarchist collective had that huge hit with "Tubthumping," which stunned me when I heard who it was. The nineties were very disruptive to preconceived notions, though nothing like today.

I get knocked down/but I get up again

Not really in my wheelhouse but for some odd reason I like it.

It would probably kill at a karaoke bar.

I'd rank it behind Wake Me by Rusty.

For some odd reason I have always loved the song as well.  Maybe it is a good song.

Honestly didn't know the name and the artist of the song, but I always think of it as on the top 10 quintessential song from the 90s that wasn't from a popular band.

I thought I heard that the reason the band didn't do much aside from this hit was due to the lead singer not wanting to go out and tour.

It might not have been them, but I'm pretty sure. I would have seen them in the spring of 2007.

"On July 25, 2006, Olympia-based label Kill Rock Stars re-released Little by Little... with a slightly altered track listing (songs on the bonus disc and main album swapped places). This release was much more widely available, and the band set out on its first national tour in five years in support of the album. On October 10, 2006, Barsuk Records released Little Round Mirrors as a maxi-single/EP with four B-sides."

I liked the song a lot when I was younger—I find it okay to good now.   I’d have to think about where I’d rank it amongst the one hit wonders from the last 50 years—-but I don’t think it’d be top 10 for me.   Right off the bat—I instantly thought that “steal my sunshine” by Len, “your woman” by white town,  “butterfly” by crazy town  would all rank higher. I’m sure I could think of a lot more if I sat down and thought about it for more than a few seconds.

One of the greatest songs of the decade.  I don't hear where this supposed honking is.
Still love the song (and even the follow-up single).  Rob Harvilla of the Ringer does a great podcast called 60 Songs That Explain the 90s that covers You Get What You Give and New Radicals in great detail.  Had no idea they were invited to play at Biden's inauguration.

If we turn this into a more general "90's one hit wonders" thread...I do have lists. Looking back, I'm reminded why I didn't like 90's music very much.

If not this one, my next countdown is likely to be either 1992 or 1993, so you'll get a chance to show off your stuff there.

Good 90's: Take a Picture - Filter

Bad 90's: Bittersweet Symphony - The Verve
Oof, never mind what I said above.  Unless, you accidentally reversed these. 😉

Wait, and Filter wasn't a one-hit wonder.  Hey Man, Nice Shot was inescapable.

I'm not sure I could take a WHOLE YEAR of ANY year of the 90's. Maybe 1990, because it would have vestiges of the 80's. :boxing:

🥊

How about Save Yourself by Stabbing Westward?

Whoa, love The Verve. Urban Hymns is one of my favorite albums of the decade.
They had many hits in the UK, and the Brits know their music, damnit!
It sounds like a lament sung in the Pit of Despair or if you're having a limb removed in a opium den.

Let's see:

1. Cum* on Feel the Noize - Quiet Riot

2. Beautiful - Aztec Trip

3. Come on Eileen - Save Ferris

4. Tubthumper - Chumbawumbda (sp?)

5. She's so High - Tal Bachman

6. Turning Japanese - The Vapors

7. Afternoon Delight - Starland Vocal Band

8. Tequila - The Champs

9. The Lion Sleeps Tonight - The Tokens

Obviously I threw in some personal favorites here, but I can see an argument for it being top ten. Probably in a clump with "Who Let the Dogs Out," "Monster Mash," etc.

*Mods please don't get mad - this is actually how it's spelled!

Is "Laid" by the band James a one-hit wonder? I once got in an argument with a colleague about this.
