Frank Gore Holdout? (1 Viewer)

Keep in mind that due to injuries that caused both missed games and limited opportunities in games, Frank Gore has only exceeded 300 carries once in his career. The guy is an absolute warrior and one of the toughest guys around, but his missed games don't tell the whole story. He has had multiple surgeries (both knees, both shoulders, fractured hip, etc.) that should concern any franchise. Also, look at his carry totals. There's a pretty clear trend and it;s not pretty.

2006: 312

2007: 260

2008: 240

2009: 229

2010: 203

If it was up to me, I'd make the niners give him a huge bonus just for making the them even remotely watchable for the last six years. He's such an easy guy to root for and he's been the heart and soul of the offense. But, the NFL is a business and contracts don't reward for what you have done in the past Rather, it's about what you will do in the present and future. He might have a decent year or two left, but unless it's an incentive laden contract, he's not getting a big payday at this point.
In this case, I think converting some of his remaining base pay into an upfront bonus and then writing an incentive laden contract is the way to handle this. Let Gore sign a 5-year, $60 million (or whatever) deal that is voidable after two years, put in a bunch of makable-but-difficult incentives to get the really big money, and then both sides win - Gore gets to save face and have a big contract announced, and the team minimizes risk beyond the two-year timeframe.I'm with the people who think San Francisco could challenge for the NFC West crown this year - soft division, and they have a lot of good players on offense if only the unit will jell. I hope they get Gore in soon.

SAN FRANCISCO -- The San Francisco 49ers say running back Frank Gore will return to the team Monday after missing the first four days of training camp due to a holdout. A team spokesman confirmed late Sunday that Gore has spoken with coach Jim Harbaugh and has decided to practice while he attempts to negotiate a contract extension with the team. Gore is scheduled to earn $2.9 million in base salary and $2 million in a roster bonus during the final season of his current deal.Under the terms of the NFL's new labor agreement, Gore is subject to $90,000 in fines for his holdout. The 49ers are off Monday, putting Gore back on the field with the team on Tuesday.San Francisco general manager Trent Baalke said Saturday he expected Gore to play with the team this season but was prepared to move forward without the two-time Pro Bowler.Gore, the heart of the 49ers offense, has been deemed healthy by his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, who hasn't responded to phone messages or emails.Gore went down with a season-ending fractured hip in a Monday night game at Arizona last Nov. 29. Gore, who avoided surgery on the hip, ran for 853 yards and three touchdowns in his sixth NFL season and caught 46 passes for 452 yards and two TDs.
Classy move by Gore.

classy, yes but may be stupid. Leon Washington pulled a similar move last year and cost himself millions.

He already has millions. Doing something like this when it may not be in your best financial interest shows character. I'd say Gore probably just loves football. The guy would probably play for free. I hope the 49ers do right by him.

or it could be that he realized he was making a mistake and the team definately wasn't going to do anything until they saw what he can do on the practice field.....and is someone considered to not have character if they simply honor their contract and show up for practice like everybody else....nothing says he couldn't have done 4 days ago what he is doing now.....try to renegotiate while fulfilling your current contract...he shouldn't be given pats on the back for ending his holdout and doing what he is supposed to be doing.....

 Wasn't Gore holding out for more money?

Why do what you love for free if someone will pay you for it?

I'm glad he'll be back on the field Tuesday - I want to hear how he looks on the field after rehabbing that hip...

Gore in his time has clearly shown he absolutely LOVES playing football. He's been a fantastic team player and a guy I'm proud to say plays for my team. Every team would be better off with more players holding a Frank Gore mentality.

your team or any team would be crazy to offer him a new deal without being able to see how he has come back from his injury......that should be a no brainer.... which makes his bravado of a 4 day holdout really silly IMO......you could run for 2000 yards in the first 12 weeks, save baby seals in the off season, been a pro bowler for the last 6 years, be my son in law and father of my grandkids....but I ain't gonna give you a new multi million dollar deal until I see how you are doing on the field after coming back from your injury.....
